Samsung Galaxy S (Verizon/Fascinate)

Sammy USB driver installed ( In device mgr I have ADB Interface > Samsung Android Composite ADB Interface while the phone is plugged into the WinXP home pc

I also have the Tether ethernet adapter in devices

I loaded the Tether app on the phone w/no prob and have debugging on, of course. The pc recognizes the phone w/ no prob.

However, when I fire off the app on the pc side, I get:
'The application failed to start because winusb.dll was not found - re-installing may fix the problem'

The installation for Tether fails at the driver install - I get a red 'X'... cannot install the tether WinUSB AndroidUsbDeviceClass 8/11/09 2.0.0010.00002 - install failed

I've installed the Android SDK, the Java JDK and the MS C++ redist, all to no avail. I think it has nothing to do with any of that stuff anyway - this looks like something missing from the tether setup 1.4.3.9

I've scanned the forums and have not found anything referring to this specific dll/error.

I doubt it matters, but I had tether for BB on this pc. I uninstalled and rebooted before installing for android. I did remove, reboot and re-install the android setup a couple times as well.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

I had some sort of error after latesest beta install sorry forgot error but was posibly same windll. A rebot to care of it.
Now my problem is have to accept la everytime I start on phone

Hello, I did this and tryed to re-install coming up with same error, but tether will now open and connect with the driver placed in file. Tether is really slow connection, was faster on blackberry. Also on andriod app not showing any packets up/down even though I am connected to internet now.

Same error:

I too have this problem where the Device Driver Installation cannot complete. This disappointments me, I loved tether for my BB Tour so I bought it for my Droid X (I still use both). Hopefully there is a fix soon.

Ok I got tether to start on my laptop now, by downloading the missing DLL file, and its connect to my phone, but I cannot connect to any websites. My windows live messenger will not connect either.

I'm having the same issue. Please help. Tether on my BlackBerry worked great. Only went to the Android, because I knew I could get this program!

Update: Downloaded the DLL file above and put it in the file it said and now it works. YIPPEE!

My HTC EVO says waiting for usb connection never connects . Laptop says app failed because Wins.dll was not found. I have removed, reinstalled and revolted several times to no avail.

Please give me something that works. I never had a problem with my BB 8330 curve.

Still have same problem. I have removed, reinstalled, rebooted so many times I have lost track. Never had a problem with my BB 8330 curve. What is going on with this software ? I have Win XP pro same as I have always had same computer and all.

Could you try the following:

1 - Please uninstall Tether from the PC.

2- Download winusb.dll from the following link and save it to C:\Windows\System 32

http://dllcentral.com/winusb.dll/6.0.6000.16386/

3- Reboot the PC.

4- Install Tether from the following link:

http://tether.com/a/setup.exe

My install on XP was also failing with the same Winusb.dll not found error.

I tried the new setup file and followed the 4 steps outlined above. Now Tether completes the install, but when I try to run it, I get an error message saying that the Winusb.dll file is not a valid windows image.

I bought this version thinking it would work flawlessly like it did on my BB Storm, but no luck getting my Droid X tethered thus far.

Any other suggestions?

I was too premature on declaring that the suggested fix worked. I downloaded the DLL file and tried reinstalling Tether from the suggested link and it did connect for a few seconds.........

After that, it was so slow that a web page wouldn't even load.

I used to have a BB Curve 8330 and it ran perfectly with it.

I don't know if it's XP or if it's Tether. I am in the process of getting a new computer that has Windows 7. I'm hoping it will work on there!

Update - I downloaded Tether to my new Windows 7 computer, hooked up my Droid 2 and I have working internet. Obviously, they need to work on their Windows XP version. Good luck.

Yes still receiving Winusb.dll file not found. When we going to get this thing fixed ? I never had any problem with my blackberry. I have done everything by the book still doesn't work.

I was getting the winusb.dll not found error as well. I also couldn't figure out why the phone wouldn't work when USB debugging was disabled but it is a Samsung Intercept and I went to Samsung's site and got the USB modem drivers there and it then installed drivers correctly.

Anyway I grabbed the winusb.dll from the link posted in this thread and put it in /windows/system32 and then it worked. It runs and connects now but only if the phone is on wi-fi then I get like 3-5mbps but obviously if there's wifi avail you wouldn't need to tether. When just using the cell network (in this case Virgin Mobile which uses Sprint's 3G) its so latent and slow (11-40kbps) I could never use it to work or do anything but minimal stuff :\

I have switched From a blackberry to android Droid x . I have loaded the new software on both the phone and computer . When I did not find the wind usb dot dll I downloaded it from the site you recommended And put it into The system 32 directory After following your instructions about rebooting and reinstalling I know get the error message when usb dot dll is not a valid windows image area please let me know if there's another solution. I've always had good luck with the tether on the blackberry I would like to use it on my droidx. M
y carrier is verizon.

Also having similar problems as described above on WinXP Dell Netbook. Downloaded the WINUSB.DLL file to System32 directory. Android side working ok. Got same message on PC saying not a valid Windows image. Also detailed this on my other thread, before finding this one. Help, please.

I'm having the same problem as canman, installed the dll to system32, now the error is that it's not a valid window image. I'm an LG Optimus S with windows xp Help?

I really really liked Tether for my BB and recommended it to everyone, I'm very disappointed with this problem and the fact that I had to repurchase Tether just to have this problem! Can we at least get an update on the status of fixing this bug? Right now I've spent money on a product that's not working at all

I have a Motorola Cliq. I set up Tether w/o a problem on my desktop. My Dell laptop is another story. I keep getting the winusb.dll not found message. Motorola tells me my phone cannot be used as a modem, yet it setup on the HP desktop, although I haven't used it to go online yet. The only reason I really want to tether is for the laptop when I travel. I'm waiting for an answer from Tether.Com

Out of curiosity, is there ANYONE with an Android device who has successfully installed and operated Tether with their PC laptop?

I'm trying with Droid X and Dell Inspiron netbook w/WinXP. I've gotten to the point where it says the "winusb.dll is not a valid Windows image", using the links and files provided by Tether.

Beyond aggravated now, especially having it work so nicely with my BB.

I want to thank Matt at Tether for assisting me with the winusb.dll problem over the past several days. I now have the correct winusb.dll file, which is a 16KB file vs the 15KB file I had downloaded, and Tether came up AOK on my Dell netbook. Thanks Matt!

I just tried this suggestion and low and behold I am tethering as we speak! Yahooooo! I am soooo happy it is finally working. I almost threw in the towel! I used Tether on my Blackberry for over a year and loved it... and only got this Droid X because I wanted to keep using this Tether product. I managed to get the WINUSB.DLL file saved just as you suggested and rebooted. I really didn't expect it to work but by golly it did!!! Thank you so much!
