I'm sure others would like to see Tether work via wifi too.

Good Job Guys & Happy New Year! Tether kicks much ass.

what good is having tether working through wifi gonna do??

You are already getting data service for free through wifi, why would you want to run your data through a second program??

Thats like asking for a free soda when you own a soda factory!

I think the intent was to to use the phone like a wireless router/modem combination, similar to the mifi is my best comparison.

That is exactly right. This would make the phone be like a wireless router that is plugged in at your home. It will then broadcast a wireless signal, that your laptop could pick up on and use the data that way. If the developers at Tether can accomplish this...I have a feeling this would be the best selling software for tethering your Android device. The DROID I know is already rooted and people have enabled WiFi tethering that way...but you have to be a friggan genious to root a phone.

If you can do Ad-Hoc networking it could be a possibility. I dont' think without a rewrite to some of the OS code would allow the phone to act as an access point.

I vote for this as a good idea, but not if it delays the release of the basic USB/Bluetooth version for Android by one day -- we're getting antsy!

What I used to do when my crappy internet blinked off was to connect my laptop to my mobile network via a USB-connected Palm Treo, then use Apple's "share internet" feature which created an ad-hoc network for the rest of the computers in my house. Should be very possible to do the ad-hocking on the phone, making it more platform-independent.

Android developers are definitely having success on rooted phones, haven't seen much hit yet with out-of-the-box installs. Data transfer seems to take little in the way of computing resources (though it drains battery with the network access) -- it might be ok to be a little wasteful and employ a software-heavy solution to get the desired effect -- seems like even "slow" android phones have the muscle to power a small network -- my Treo dished out DSL speeds to 4 computers without breaking a sweat.

Cheers.
