Can that be used without having a fee added on by AT&T or other providers?
No, you will need to add a data package for most carriers. In addition, IP Modem doesn't work for all carriers.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you get the error "connect your blackberry to the laptop with a usb cable" but it is already connected, then you're supposed to get your carrier's APN and use that instead which means you're going to be paying some ridiculous charge for the privledge of tethering. Is that about it?
I did try my carriers APN after much research here to figure out where to put it, but still get the same message. Even after cold booting, re-downloading, and otherwise wasting about 3 hours yesterday, I'm still stuck. My carrier is Cincinnati Bell Wireless, btw and I'm using a new blackberry bold 9700.
Any place to go for help, or should I just forget it?
No, this shouldn't have anything to do with your APNs. What does your BlackBerry and PC say? When Tether is running on your BlackBerry can you go to your View Log and let us know what it says?
Ok, this could get a little long but here goes-
If I run blackberry desktop mgr, and my APN's blank, then I hookup fine with blackberry tether. Cincinnati bell tells me that I'll need their $30 per month plan however.
When I try to hook up with tether here (v1.4.3.7) and APN's set for cincinnati bell wireless it hooks up fine. When I blank out the APN's to default blanks, then I get "Failed to find available port".
Here's the log both with the APN and without the APN (which gives the no available port error)
With APN set to Cincinnati Bell WIRELESS:
wap-gocbw.com
tether v1.4l.3.7
connecting via usb
first connection
trying carrier specific APN for mcc 310 and Mnc 420
no connection
trying direct
registration validation started
successful (65.111.172.181)
trying udp
trying udp with user apn or local port 4779
UDP connection successful
checking for usb connection
tether is under trial license
USB cab le is connected to BB
if I try with NO apn then log is the same until I get to the line following port 4779 then log says:
failed to find available port
port 4779 in use trying next,
then repeats all the way through 4779 to port 4803 at which point it says:
UDP failed to find available port
no longer receiving packets.
hope I typed all this correctly- is there any way of just forwarding the the log file? (whew).
Thanks for any help!!
Bud
So, it looks like your carrier requires your APN settings to be set. From the log it looks like it's connecting fine too? I'm not really sure what problem you are experiencing?
Now that Tim explained that the APN on this site is not tether specific and that the software here should not trigger tethering charges from my carrier, then I don't have a problem.
Everything is working great and I'm very happy with the software and just registered and am now a very happy official tether geek. :)

With Sprint, the BB phone as a modem capability is disabled by the carrier. That happened in late 2009. Sprint only offers phone as a modem on a couple of very limited function plans (for an additional fee). Sprint is pushing to use their Aircard with an additional monthly fee.
When Tether is used, it is just data. If you have an unlimited data plan, there is no additional charge, just the one-time purchase of Tether.
I have a Bold9000 and I have a data place how would I use APN? please help thanks. I will like to know if I can connect my BB without buying tethering program thanks
hazrat,
In many cases, the APN isn't needed. It depends on your individual carrier. I have Sprint (with a BB Curve 9330), and the use of Tether couldn't be easier. I just used the default settings. I connect my phone to the computer with a USB cable, start Tether on the phone, then start Tether on the laptop. That gives me internet on the laptop. I'll also run I Heard Radio on the phone at the same time and periodically check email on the phone. If someone calls, my phone stops the internet connection for the duration of the call. After I hang up, I need to restart Tether on my phone.
If you have unlimited data, or a pretty large limit, you shouldn't have any problems. I've been using Tether for a year without any problems.
Is this for real? I'm glad they're having this feature. I hope this is also applicable on Smart Berry contracts to. I'm really eager to install it.
Jillian,
Yes, this is for real. I've been using it for about a year and have been very satisfied. I'll use it at work when I don't want to connect through the filtered network, in airports when I didn't want to pay for wireless access, in hotels when the connection was painfully slow, and at home if my connection was down and I needed internet searches to help troubleshoot.
Download the free trial and make sure everything is working. It is a pretty good system and gives you confidence before paying.

If any moderators are listening, one feature I would like is to show the current version information on the homepage with a link to download the updated version for registered users. It would be easier than trying to find the email with the link information.
Thanks.

Simply put: IPModem configuration is utilizing carrier's DUN infrastructure, which in general required for a separate rate plan.
Using Tether, your connection is utilizing your existing Blackberry data service. Depends on your specific plan and carrier service agreement, in most of case, there won't be additional charges to your existing plan.
