Weird "Uncaught Exception" with new BB Torch

Just upgraded to a Torch from a Bold 9700.

Tether over USB continues to work flawlessly, but BT problematic.

Right away I was seeing "Uncaught Exception: Application Tether(xxx) is not responding; process terminated". "xxx" represents a three digit number.

To troubleshoot I did a device wipe and installed just Tether and did a single BT pairing on the clean device. Tether over BT works gorgeously, just like on my 9700.

Then I start to add stuff back. The VERY FIRST thing I do is to set up my email (basically, I send the service books over through BIS). This is the only new change I make after installing Tether. RIGHT AWAY, the error returns and I can't run Tether over BT.

It is though configuring email on the device "corrupts" the Service Books or some other settings in such a way that disagrees with the running of Tether over BT.

Any ideas? It's got me. I am hoping this is a heretofore uncaught bug and it will be fixed in a subsequent release. Would be interested to know if anyone with the Torch is even SEEING this.

Oh, BB OS 6 is fully updated, and I am using the most recent version of Tether.

TIA

And I should add, I set every permission I could find to Allow.

Which carrier are you currently using?

Could you provide me with the exact version of BlackBerry OS running on the Torch ?

The About screen says exactly:

6.0 Bundle 695 (v6.0.0.246, Platform 6.4.0.105).

Attempts to do a device upgrade tell me I am up to date.

Just to update you, I took all of my email accounts off (without doing a wipe) and the crash still occurred, so I just added back the couple of addresses I more urgently need. Of course, it still happens.

Just to make this clear: the crash happens EVERY time I try to launch using BT. I can see on the Tether handheld screen that connection is Completed, which (normally) comes right before "Waiting for Bluetooth connection". But I don't get that far because the app crashes immediately.

I have to emphasize that in the three months I had Tether on the Bold 9700 it worked near flawlessly. There were occasional "uncaught exception" errors with 1.1, but these seemed to just go away with 1.4 (though very rarely the app would just crash).

ALSO, on the new Torch, USB works perfectly--indeed, I am using it right now.

My next experiment will be to use Desktop Manager to clear the Service Books altogether, without doing a full wipe. My hypothesis is that adding email accounts alters the Service Books in a way that Tether dislikes. Moreover, this alteration is irreversible since it cannot be rectified when the email accounts are removed.

After that, I may try another wipe and once I get Tether over BT to work again on a clean device I will add accounts back gradually to see if I can associate the crash with adding a particular email account.

In any case, I really think this is is a bug of some significance. I am not setting up anything exotic on my phone. Tether has "just worked" and should keep working on the new phone. So I hope I have provide you enough info to fix the problem in general.

Forgot to mention--my carrier is Rogers.

I don't know what the heck I did, but the damn thing is fixed now.

I didn't do a wipe or clear the Service Books, but I did remove and reinstall Tether a couple of times and re-paired with my MacBook from scratch just for good measure.

Now, when I choose "Bluetooth", I see the satisfying progression from "Connection Successful" to "Waiting for Bluetooth Connection". And when I get on the laptop, all seems to work now.

Let's hope it lasts!

Love the software, and I really would have missed the elegance of BT use just because of the new phone.

Glad to hear it's working.

I will look into this issue further.

Interesting that this seems to work for you now, Leslie......

I have had this UE error ever since I got my Torch. Even have the latest edition of Tether on my device and yet still get the error.

I was hoping the new version would have addressed that error.

Perhaps I'll uninstall Tether and reinstall to see what happens.

rwgrosser, it is a long shot, but in my repeated installations and removals I noticed something:

http://tether.com/t/tether.jad

goes to version 1.4.3.9.

http://tether.com//t/tether.jad

(note double slash) goes to version 1.4.4.0

I am speculating that a residue of the older version interfered with the newer, and that only a complete and proper removal of everything could resolve things?

All I can say is that I have run Tether over BT for a couple of days now, logging a few dozen megabytes, and it has been solid.

Weird.

Hope you become as fortunate as me. The excellent speed even over BT is one of the neatest things with this software. Who wants to wrestle with a USB cable on the bus or train and risk the BB being pulled down to the ground?

Thanks, Leslie. I'll try that second link you posted.

Tim, what are the differences between 3.9 and 4.0? I did notice that there's an option now to turn off WiFi, but are there other differences we should be aware of?

Basically the changes for 4.0 would be to make sure Wifi is disabled on the BlackBerry.

mhankinson, please look at Tim Speed's thread regarding efforts to fix a similar error. I have posted over there along with rwgrosser. The problem has returned for me. Rats!

I'm having the same issue that has been reported. I have a Bold with OS 6.0.0.222. I just upgraded to the new tether 1.4.4.0 and each time I open the application and select bluetooth I get an uncaught exception error. USB connection works fine however, I would like to get my bluetooth back up and running. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have we made any headway on this, Tim?

No progress, sad to say, we are still waiting for some progress from RIM. Since there hasn't been a fix yet from them, I'll see if we can look back into it on our end, we have the tools to debug the issue if we can replicate it, and that has been our trouble so far.

Hi Tim et al.,

Just bumping this since it continues to be a burr in my butt.

If the Tether gets ported to the PlayBook and I get a PB, I would really like to have BT tethering up and running again.

I have done all of the BB OS and Tether updates as they have come along and the crash still occurs. USB usage is highly reliable, however.

Hope we get a fix on this, though I respect it hasn't been a huge priority because not all OS 6 users seem to report it.

I get the same UE on my Verizon 9650 6.0 Bundle 1741 v6.0.0.431. USB is fine
