Hello All,

Just wanted to see if anyone else is running into "modem like" download speeds using Tether. I'm currently using a Blackberry Curve 8330 on Sprint.

Speed test using Tether from my laptop (tested on MAC and PC):
-Average download and upload speeds using Tether are .20 kbps down/.15 kbps up.

Speed test using Blackberry browser (Opera):
-Not sure how accurate this is but when running a speed test from my Blackberry Curve the results were approx 4000 kbps. The website i used for the speedtest was www.inetworktest.com/wired

Anyone else running into similar download issues? Thanks

try a speed test here http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and report back. I have Sprint in the MPLS, MN area and get .12 UL, .25-.45 DL. Sprint network is the slowest provider in my area.

Is that your normal speeds for your area?

FIXED -- BLACKBERRY CURVE 8330

OK -- had the same problem, speeds were awful, coming in around 10k up and down.

Problem isn't with sprint, problem is with the blackberry. If you have lots of apps currently running (I did, soduku, brickbreaker, vnc, memo, calender, etc.) it will be slow.

Kill as many of the apps as you can, or try complete shutdown (remove the battery and restart) and then check your speeds.

I went from 10k to 800k by shutting down apps.

Hope this helps -- if you're still slow, I've got no idea!

This is very important and one of the troubleshooting steps, thank you for posting your issue and resolution.

I am running a BB Curve 8330m using the 4.5 os.

I have tried shutting down all my un-wanted applications. I finally resorted to un-installing the linkedin app since it would never seem to shut down.

As best as I can determine I have more than 12somethings of free memory.

I have also re-booted my blackberry.

I am consistently getting "0.12Mb/s" or so for download and "0.03Mb/s" for uploads. This translates, I think into 12kbps ranges which are not even close to the possible. I need a way to confirm this speed using the bb browser. Any ideas?

Could you provide me with the signal strength of your BlackBerry by going to the following:

Signal strength: -96dBm

I have also finally caught up with a non-browser based speedtest for the bb that appears to show I have lots of G3 type connectivity speed.

I also found a free version of bb memory optimizer that indicates I am running 72% empty in memory.

This mornings experiments have pushed the speed as high 32KBps which is nice but not even close to the expected laptop performance.

Could you try moving your BlackBerry to around -75 to -85 dBm and try again?

Also when Tether is running and you are not browsing the internet do the packets increase?

I'm experiencing the same problems - way too slow.
