I talked with a tech support rep and she stated that VZW would not have a problem with using a third party provider for tehtering, However she said to read the fine print on any terms of use before using a third party provider. In other words make sure you have an unlimited data plan and that you monitor your usage. She also went on to say that the phones you purchase are yours and yo can do anything you want with them,VZW cannot and will not monopolize the tethering feature...but you will be responsible for any overages that you rack up. She said as for the future she was not sure what VZW would do (if they would charge us or not) as this is the first that they have heard of TetherBerry. I really want to take advantage of this service but I am alittle bit on the fence about the whole thing.... It would interesting to hear what other opinions are about this.

I've tethered my Treo previously with Sprint and through Bluetooth with Verizon... now USB with Verizon and have never had any problems with any of them.

Since these companies provide a tethering feature for additional cost, there should not be any problems.

I guess the worry here is that if you use TetherBerry and you currently use your wireless provider for tethering and you cancel with them for that service, would there be any repercussions down the line.

Presumably, VZW charges more for tethering because you can (and probably will) transfer a LOT more data if you're tethering than you would if you were just transferring data to your phone itself.

I would also be willing to bet that a VZW lawyer could find something in their Terms of Service agreement that makes it a violation to use your phone tethered to a computer without paying VZW for tethering.

So, the question in my mind is, if VZW does decide it's a violation of the TOS, and starts cutting off people's data plans if they're tethering without paying VZW for it, will TetherBerry give a refund? I.e. if VZW cuts off TetherBerry users who aren't paying for VZW tethering, can I get a refund on TetherBerry? If I'm paying VZW for tethering, I certainly don't need TetherBerry.

DO THE MATH ... TBy costs $40 one-time. VZW tethering costs $30 per month. Chances are it would take VZW 2 months to notice, contact you, threaten you, then shut you off if you used TBy 24/7. By then you'd STILL be $20 ahead!! Jeeeez folks, poop or get off the pot. BUY THE DARN TBy. I did and I'm THRILLED with it. I don't intend to to use it often -- just when I reeealy need web access and it would overwhelm my BBy Storm's browser & there's no wifi nearby to connect my laptop.

I agree Dick !!!

Why some folks want to keep themselves in such a world of skepticism I'll never know !!! I don't know of many services out there these days that are being offered for a ONE TIME FEE of FORTY stinkin' dollars !!!

Then there's the folks that felt the need to call Verizon and tip them off to this FANTASTIC DEAL instead of just getting out their contracts and READING THEM !!! Now that they've been informed I'm certain they'll make an attempt react...( way to go folks !!! )

For myself ( with an UNLIMITED data transfer service ) should Verizon now try to impose a limit I guess my option would be 'breach of contract' ...
My guess is though in the future they WILL discontinue 'UNLIMITED' data transfer service unless you use their equipment and their accessibility method. The last time I checked on that with Verizon (about a year ago) it cost $35.00 for their USB modem and a real nice price of $59.99 PER MONTH to use the damn thing. Trust me I took one on a 30 day FREE trial, it DID NOT perform any near as well as tetherberry !!! I'll tell you how impressed I was with it, I took it back to the store on the second day of my 30 day trial...

The innovators of Tetherberry are offering a GREAT service at an EXCELLENT more than fair price, and their support has been EXCELLENT for me !!! I've emailed some questions and they were responded to in a timely manner and my questions were professionally answered, and issues resolved.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TETHERBERRY !!! THANK YOU !!! J.T.

yeah, they still charge $59.95/month which is ridiculous. What they do is if you're on the BES with BB, which runs 44.95/month, they charge $15 extra a month, if you're on BIS which runs 29.95/month, they charge an additional $30/month. This is also something I think is ridiculously unfair.Either way, they bring your monthly charge up to $59.95. Maybe with the introduction of Tetherberry, and possibly other followers to come, they will see that their pricing is not realistic for today's market. I hesitated to purchase Tetherberry, but I'm one of those people who needs it more for the sense of freedom, than for actual use. It will be very rare that I will have to use it, and it will never be enough that I go over(or even close to) the 5G that VZW calls unlimited. The funny thing is, the fact that I will hardly ever use it is what makes Tetherberry perfect for me. I'm not paying VZW $30/month for something I'm not gonna use, but the one time fee for Tetherberry means now I have it when I need it. It's a great deal.

Does VZW actually state that 5GB is the limit in their unlimited data plan for blackberries?

NO they DO NOT... It's not unlimited up to 5gig as some plans may be. It is UNLIMITED as in NO LIMIT, as in USE AS MUCH AS YOUR HEART DESIRES... I have researched this from every direction.

Ditto! Unlimited is unlimited period. Verizon manager I talked to validated this. They unlocked GPS because of the complaints. You OWN the phone and Verizon should not be able to lock down tethering. Thats like me buying a new car but the tires can only be used to go to certain places.

Ummm, no. Did you read my post one down from here? You may be buying the phone, but you're not buying Verizon's towers or network. You're paying a monthly rental fee to use them. And VZW can AND DOES have language in the Terms of Service that says, specifically, that you cannot use your Unlimited Data plan to have your phone tethered to any kind of computer. AND, it says that, if you exceed 5 GB per month of data transfer, they can restrict your service. I.e. they can set your account to get slower throughput. But, they could just as easily have made the ToS say that they can charge your for overages, or cut you off, or whatever they want to do.

If you don't like the contract you signed, you can pay the ETF and get out of it (and you shouldn't have signed it in the first place).

Yes, reading your contract is a good idea. If you READ it, you will find that "Unlimited Data Plan" is the title, not the contractual obligation. They specifically mention that if you exceed 5 gig of data transfer in a month, they have the right to throttle your speed down.

I'd also bet that they have some language in there that disallows tethering without paying for tethering.

If you rent a pickup truck with unlimited mileage for $20 a day, and the contract has fine print that says you cannot use it for towing without paying a towing surcharge, do you think the rental company is in breach of contract if they catch you towing without paying the surcharge and they take away the keys?? Please! Go talk to a lawyer!

Pesonally, I use my Storm tethered. It's EVDO Rev A and gives me just as good performance, for $15 a month (on BES now, but was the same price last Summer, when I was on BIS), as my previous aircard did, for $60 a month. The only difference to me is that I can't surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time. That may be a problem for some, but it's not for me.

Unless I'm incorrect, if VZW shut off your service you would incur a $175 early termination fee and possibly data overage charges. That said, there isn't a whole lot of incentive for me to pay $40 now for functionality that may cost me $175+ down the road, as well as the loss of service and many headaches.

Don't get me wrong, I love TetherBerry. I simply feel that even the introductory price is borderline overpriced given that it is just a gateway between your computer and your carrier's network, and provides no assurances. I don't even want to know what the regular price is going to be...

The way you start out your post "Unless I'm incorrect" tells me you didn't read your contract... READ YOUR CONTRACT ... BE INFORMED... BE CORRECT... Verizons $175 early termination fee is charged when the CLIENT (YOU) choose to terminate the service before the end of the contract... WOW...

Despite my concerns about VZW finding out about this and closing this loophole, I went ahead and bought TB. Here are some notes that weren't mentioned in the installation instructions:

- You do not have to disable your other network adapters to get TB to work. However, if might be a good idea, if you're having trouble getting TB to work.

- You do not have to be actually running the BB Desktop Manager to use TB. I suspect that the only reason you have to install it is so that the BB USB drivers are present on your computer.

- I'm activated on a BES. I have now found that, unlike with regular tethering, when I'm connected to my Exchange server on my computer, going through TB, when I receive email, it shows up virtually simultaneously on my BB and in Outlook. With regular tethering, I would not receive it on my BB until I disconnected my tethering session.

- Reconciliation between Outlook and the BB seems a bit slow. I read some messages in Outlook and deleted them several minutes ago. They finally switched to showing as "Read" on my BB, but they still haven't deleted from my BB Inbox. Doh. Wait. Now they have. So, it took maybe 5 minutes. Very cool!

- You have to manually run the TB app on BOTH your PC and your BB for the connection to be made. This is mentioned only briefly in the instructions and easily missed. The app for the BlackBerry is an OTA download directly to your phone. The app for the PC is downloaded from this website to your PC as setup.exe, and then you run setup.exe to install the PC app.

- The PC app does not have any way to minimize it to the SysTray. You can minimize it to the Task Bar, just like any other desktop application. Having it minimize to the SysTray is what I would call a "Would Be Nice" enhancement.

Great app! If I get 4 months use out of it before Verizon figures it out and somehow makes it stop working, I'll break even. More than that and I'm ahead. Not too worried about it, either way.

damn porn. i think i might get over the 5gb mark. Ill tell you what happens, as it will hit my brother who pays for the phones. lol. I did notice that when I go onto my verizon and check the stats, It says unlimited and that is where the bandwidth is going towards. I believe ill be fine just because there was nothing that says tethering or anything like that. I hope im not over yet, but i just checked mb today and it was at like 4gb and that was before i started today. I do get a lot of activity on my tether berry watching hulu every night. I love my tv.

I do have a quick question for you concerning the speed. I am currently using my storm for my tether to the internet. When you switch from the VZW tether to TB, did you see a SLOWER response or faster response. Also, how does your IP address get assigned on your notebook... When you look at whatismyip.com does that match your IP address from your ipconfig? I have serveral devices that DYNDNS updates for me to allow me to connect to and if my assigned IP does not match my external IP that can cause issues.

I ran a SPEEDTEST.NET from my VZW tehter and received the following results:

  • SIGNAL 2 bars on the Storm
  • PING 135ms
  • DOWNLOAD 381kbs
  • UPLOAD 174kbs

Please let me know how this rates with TB.

Thanks!!

Look for an earlier post from me with details on speed benchmarks comparing TetherBerry to standard VZW dial-up tethering. The summary is, VZW dial-up tethering is significantly faster than TetherBerry. E.g. 900 Kbps downloads on TB and 1500+ Kbps downloads on VZW dial-up - using a Storm 9530 (OS v4.7.0.114 Hybrid).

I don't know what my pings were. I'm not a gamer, so I didn't check that or really care.

TetherBerry is going to hose your DynDNS. The software that runs on your BB functions as a router and DHCP server. When you connect the BB and run the TB software on both sides, your laptop thinks you've plugged in an Ethernet cable and it does a DHCP request for an IP address. The software on the phone assigns it one in the 192.168.x.x subnet. Just like if you were on a desktop PC plugged into a Linksys router that is hooked to a cable modem. So, the TB software on the phone gets your external IP address, but your laptop gets an address like 192.168.25.100.

For what you want, the TB programmers would need to change the BB app to work as a bridge (I think). Or build in DynDNS support.

Did some new tests with a better signal and received the following results

COMCAST

  • Download    1308Mbs
  • Upload         2689Mbs

VERIZON VZAccess

  • Download    1308Mbs
  • Upload         172Mbs

TetherBerry

  • Download    759-Mbs - 1012Mbs
  • Upload        175Mbs - 302Mbs

Interesting... While my download was 27% slower using TetherBerry, my upload
was 46% faster.

I would like to see more consistent throughput with TetherBerry.  Even
VZAccess has a range, the TetherBerry seems to have a different up to 25% on the
download and 43% on the uploads.

I would like to see a TOTAL BANDWIDTH used that is resettable on the
TetherBerry to help you track what you have actually used.  I am sure I can
find this out somewhere but not sure where... Any one know???

I will keep both for the next couple of weeks and see how it goes.  I
have tested "successfully", FTP, FTP over SSL, HTTPS, TELNET, SSH1, SSH2, DynDNS
(pulled the actual IP and not the internal facing) as well as a number of other
APPS that use off ports.

So far.. It appears GREAT!

Would like to see the following added:

  • Allow it to minimize to the taskbar
  • Add ability to see total counts and not just counts for the current
    session
(This would allow people to track their usage over the month for those
Unlimited "as long as it is less than 5G" plans.)
  • Add ability to set a monthly date where it will automatically reset the
    usage

StuartV,

PLEASE heed TetherBerry's advice and disable/disconnect your other network adapters.

If you don't, you create a bridge to whatever network you have hooked up to your other network adapters and that can/will allow anyone on the TetherBerry network who knows how, to access your other network.

If you do this at your place of employment, you could be fired (or worse, depending on the damage that was done).

Not to scare anyone but I did take a look at vzw customer agrement and it does say among other things that if you steal they can terminate your service. I know you people out there thinking that this is not stealing but use some logic. I'm not fighting for them but they do have a overpriced service that does what this program does and it does take more usage that you would normally use on your blackberry so thats why they charge more for the service. I could not find the data usage EULA and if anyone knows where to find it I would be happy to read it over real good and tell you what I think. Also I would like to educate my self to see if I'm giving my 3rd unborn child away here :) As for them "not caring"...for the realitivly small amount of people using this program, I think were safe for now, but like some of apples app store apps like a free app that would give you free texting through a expermental google service, google could not take the stress and had to shut that service down. Head over to modmyi.com to see the article, but if this gains popularity the we could be looking at the same kind of situation here. But dispite all of this, I did buy the program and it is awesome and I use it every day! Also I did this on my blackberry so I apologize for the bad format and spelling.

Yah I am officially over the 5gb mark. i think like 300mb or so. Still using. i got 6 more days left so ill cut back on the downloading in case. Hulu works good, it glitches in the beginning. trick is to start it, then pause and let it get up a little in the process. i dont mind the ocassional glitch. but i have my computer hooked up to my 46 inch lcd hdtv. so it works and looks great!I just wish hulu didnt take so many gets lol.

I check the Verizon website and all the usage I do using TetherBerry is using my unlimited Blackberry. I have two different bandwidth entries on My Verizon. One states unlimited Blackberry and the other lists Tether 5G. When using my MZAccess the Tether 5G is hit, when using TetherBerry the Unlimited Blackberry is hit.

I am seeing faster TetherBerry throughput in a lot of places. I will be getting rid of the VZAccess.

I'm tethered thru my Blackberry Storm running ver. 103. I installed the PC software then installed the Storm's. I started the program on the PC then started the one on my Storm and connected the USB. It worked FLAWLESSLY!! I got speeds up to 584 kbps. No complaints from me. Thanks Tetherberry!!

Verizon customers are used to living in a walled garden. We feel like we are breaking the rules when we actually find a way to get more value for our monthly service fees, which offer huge margins to the carriers like Verizon.

My investigation leads me to think that you are indeed violating the terms of service (at least with Verizon), if you use a solution like tetherberry - see restriction #1 in the Verizon "Terms of Service" for blackberry unlimited data plan (extracted below):

Unlimited PDA/Smartphone and BlackBerry® Plans:
Data sessions may be used for following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force and field service automation. Intranet access requires the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.). Unlimited plans are for individual use only and not for resale. The Unlimited plans cannot be used: (1) for any applications that tether the device to laptops, PCs, or other equipment for any purpose, (2) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (3) with server devices or with host computer applications other than the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, including, without limitation, Web camera posts or broadcasts, continuous jpeg file transfers, automatic data feeds, telemetry applications, automated functions or any other machine-to-machine applications, (4) as substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.
Data sessions automatically terminate after two hours of inactivity unless used with a Mobile IP-capable device. We reserve the right to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone who uses the Unlimited plan in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.

By the way, I believe its also against the terms of service for your ISP, if you share your wi-fi and allow your neighbor to use your internet connection.

To me, you are in a grey area with this - at least with Verizon.

Those that abuse it will be hit... those that do not abuse it most likely will not get hit. I use the VZAccess about 2 times a week maybe 3 and the throughout is very small.

People that use it to down movies, streaming, etc... will be the ones that hurt the rest.

What the heck is grey about "The Unlimited plans cannot be used: (1) for any applications that tether the device to laptops, PCs" ??

It's called TETHERBerry, for cryin' out loud! Its sole purpose is to be an application that tethers the device to a laptop (or desktop).

I said from the beginning that I was sure the VZW TOS had some restriction against this. Thanks for proving me right.

All the "I have an UNLIMITED plan - I'll sue them!" whiners need to be prepared to suck it up and pay for tethering when/if VZW cuts them off for using TetherBerry. Hopefully, I'll get at least 3 months usage out of it before that happens, and TB will have paid for itself, even if it quits working after that.

Bingo... that is where I am at... It I get at least 2.5 months out of Tetherberry.... it was worth the cost... I paid $24 a month + taxes a month for VZAccess... plus I only use about 30MB a week on the TetherBerry so I am not sure they will even notice this type of access. But as you stated... If I get at least 3 months... I break even.

let us understand something and correct me if i'm wrong but the 40 bucks covers software and server usage . vzw has to charge more for server usage since they would rather tie up servers w/bes customers . i'm sure someone could shed a little light on the prices bes customers are charged for tethering and i'm sure it is less than standard customers pay.higher percentage of business accounts use blackberry as opposed to personal use there for they try to promote the sell of wifi cards for laptop usage. (this is first thing salesman tried to sell me was a wifi when i asked about tethering package)now i'm expanding my freedom by purchasing tetherberry . thanks for the great package and expanded freedom with MY blackberry.afterall i did pay for my blackberry and who is vzw to tell me how to use it? howwwwwln @ ya , wolf........

I've been a user of PdaNet for a while. I am with Verizon and was using it on a Treo. It worked great and the only issue I generally had was VPN connectivity. While I'm not an abuser of tethering, it is a handy solution for when I'm on a customer site or a location where there is no access to data services. I've been moved to a BlackBerry and am considering TetherBerry for various reasons. Same plan with 5G data services. I guess I missed their 'tether' service.

I'm not sure what all this banter is about. Not seeing any 'legitimate' information here, I felt it necessary to at least get something out there that has some meat to it. I took a browse to Verizon Wireless web site (see link below) and found nothing regarding tethering and their data service.

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=planFirst&actio...

If I were to consider the paragraph on permitted uses (see below), I feel TetherBerry would fit in just nicely.

DATA PLANS AND FEATURES
Data Plans and Features: Permitted Uses. You can use our Data Plans and Features for accessing the Internet and for such uses as: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) e–mail; (iii) intranet access (including accessing corporate intranets, e–mail and individual productivity applications made available by your company); (iv) uploading, downloading and streaming of audio, video and games; and (v) Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

If I were to consider the paragraph on prohibited ues (see below), I feel TetherBerry or any other tethering application for that matter would violate the condition.

Data Plans and Features: Prohibited Uses. You may not use our Data Plans and Features for illegal purposes or purposes that infringe upon others' intellectual property rights, or in a manner that interferes with other users' service, interferes with the network's ability to fairly allocate capacity among users, or that otherwise degrades service quality for other users. Examples of prohibited usage include: (i) server devices or host computer applications, including continuous Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine–to–machine connections, or peer–to–peer (P2P) file–sharing applications that are broadcast to multiple servers or recipients such that they could enable "bots" or similar routines (as set forth in more detail in (iii) below) or otherwise denigrate network capacity or functionality; (ii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections; (iii) "auto–responders," "cancel–bots," or similar automated or manual routines that generate amounts of net traffic that could disrupt net user groups or e–mail use by others; (iv) generating "spam" or unsolicited commercial or bulk e–mail (or activities that facilitate the dissemination of such e–mail); (v) any activity that adversely affects the ability of other users or systems to use either Verizon Wireless' services or the Internet–based resources of others, including the generation or dissemination of viruses, malware, or "denial of service" attacks; (vi) accessing, or attempting to access without authority, the information, accounts or devices of others, or to penetrate, or attempt to penetrate, Verizon Wireless' or another entity's network or systems; or (vii) running software or other devices that maintain continuous active Internet connections when a computer's connection would otherwise be idle, or "keep alive" functions, unless they adhere to Verizon Wireless' requirements for such usage, which may be changed from time to time. By way of example only, you may not use a Data Plan or Feature for web broadcasting, or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices.

I'm certainly no legal expert, however, I'd say that there is a pretty good argument to be had that prohibited uses listed 'anywhere' on their site should match all other documents. I would think it's tough to fight that out in any court. Or for Verizon to go after a customer.

Anyhow, those are my thougths and I hope to be a user of TetherBerry soon.

unless the user has their phone plugged into the wall and online 24/7 ... i see no reason why they would even come after you. I stream video and audio on my blackberry all the time. if i hook it into my comp to vpn into work for 20min to check something ....the differences are the same. You are doing what you would be doing if the phone had the correct protocols (remote desktop etc etc).

So, can I buy tether berry, and cancel my tethering service used through Verizon, and still be able to tether?

@dereks

Yes, you can. I do not have the tethering option from VZW, but do use TetherBerry.

wow you people have not been at this tethering thing with vzw for long have you?
ive been tethering for more than 5 years, back when the 14.4 speeds were deemed free for use...and the 115kbps speeds were not! did that for 2 years until evdo was around, and the 115kbps became free. then as evdo became popular, then the locked everything down, because they couldn't regulate which phones would connect at, 1x or evdo.

unless YOU give them a reason to look into it, there's no reason they're going to shut you down and terminate you. also i believe if your terminated by them, they cant charge you for early termination.
i spent 2 years tethering quietly with an enV phone, and never had a problem, but i never did over a gig of data in a month either
use it when you need it, not as your main connection and you'll be fine

the language is in the terms so that it will scare aware people and to be acted against if they need to, but that's only if you abuse the hell out of it. with 50 million customers or what ever, its going to take a lot for them to notice a lot of data use on a plan with no vzaccess - and 5gb is a good way to do that
