I am having the same problem as you are on 1.4.2. I cannot get Tether to connect using Bluetooth. I have uninstalled, rebooted and re-installed on the PC. I have uninstalled, battery pulled and reinstalled on the BB. Nothing seems to get this to work. I only have one TBService.exe running. The Tether Ethernet Adapter correctly Enables/Disables itself. My symptoms are:
1. Launch tether on the PC. I immediately get an error "Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support".
2. I click OK, and the window asking me to select a device appears. I select "Blackberry" and the connection method window appears.
3. I select Bluetooth and the Bluetooth devices window appears. From here, I get a list of my devices - with a Blank line first, then my Jawbone, then my BlackBerry 9550.
4. I select Blackberry 9550 and the Tether window appears with "Widcomm..." in the status area, then "Starting Inquiry...", then "Looking for Tether Service". From there, it gets stuck indefinitely and never connects. My Blackberry continues to show "Waiting for Bluetooth connection..."
This has been he same behavior for me for several versions of 1.1.0.x. I haven't been able to use Bluetooth for a while now. USB works fine.
I guess broadcom will not allow the update, I know your adapter is broadcom based but it appears as if you must install Dell specific drivers.
Try running Windows update and look and see if there are any updated drivers from Microsoft, check with the Dell site also. I personally had a True Mobile internal adapter in my XPS laptop but the range was so terrible I pulled the adapter out and sold it, I then replaced it with a $2 CSR based USB adapter that uses the Microsoft drivers and haven't had a problem since.
I tried the update program, but it fails at the "Detect Bluetooth Device" stage and displays an error "This program cannot upgrade your software. Please contact the manufacturer..."
I was able to locate a different updater for the internal HP Bluetooth module, and I believe that my Widcomm/Broadcom Bluetooth is now at a current version - 6.3.0.4300. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the bluetooth connection problem.
I downloaded the software last night to my PC and recieved the same error message, however after a minute I recieved a pop up box asking me what type of Blackberry I was using. I selected the correct model and everything worked as designed after that.
Still not getting or sending packets. When installing 1.4.2, I got an error message that TBService.exe could not be deleted, so I finally skipped that step. When trying to connect, I get a status message that the Tether network cable is unplugged. Also, when I run the PC software, it is still showing Version 1.4.0.0.
Click the Windows Start menu and select run, in the run dialog type without quotes "ncpa.cpl" and hit enter. If you are on Windows 7 or Windows Vista you may simply click the Windows Start menu and type "ncpa.cpl" into the search box and hit enter.
How many adapters do you have listed here and what are there names?
I often see Mc Afee be a common factor of those who can't seem to get Tether to function, other factors are a Gateway in network connections and Windows XP.
Meaning often of the people I see who are having the worst connectivity issues are running McAfee, Windows XP, and show a Gateway in their Windows network connections.
I don't show a Gateway in my network connections. Tether was working fine with McAfee on this computer back in December of last year. How can I revert to that older version?
I have removed McAfee Internet Security and now I am getting packets both directions. This problem ONLY exists on my XP machine, not on my Vista computers. What can I do about this since I have already paid for McAfee and don't want to have to purchase another similar program. Has this problem been addressed with McAfee?
Fixed that problem... for whatever reason the tbservice.exe file would not delete so I had to delete it manually.
Tether now works for me... but when I run it first on the PC I get "Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support". I clicked to close it and then it all ran fine.
Thanks for the update, maybe the sleep issue will be resolved in the final revision of this release. I am uncertain though as it seems that it is certain PC manufacturers hardware doesn't handle sleep states correctly that is causing this particular problem in my opinion.
Has Tether ever resumed from sleep properly on the PC your currently using?
Has Tether ever resumed from sleep for anyone correctly?
When I run Tether 1.4.2 on the PC, I immediately get the "connot find Tether service" error.
I think others have reported a similar problem. Perhaps there is something different about my situation that will help to isolate the root cause.
Installation: Fresh installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on a Thinkpad W510 with 16GB RAM. All the usual Lenovo/Thinkpad drivers for the hardware. Followed instructions from Tether on how to uninstall tether from BB Storm. Then installed the BB Desktop Manager 5.0.1 on the PC and confirmed that the BB Storm connections and snycs. Then 1.4.2 version on both the PC and on the BB. Rebooted PC and BB.
Attempt to operate: Started tether on BB and selected to connect via USB. Then started tether on PC and immediately got the error that it could not connect to the service. Yet, I was able to select to connect to the BB via USB, opened a browser and got to goggle. Oh, and my wired connection was unplugged while doing this.
I checked and there was one and only one Tether service, it was set to automatic and it was started.
I also noticed that when I exited the PC tether it did not cause tether on the BB to exit. V1.1.0.6 BB tether would exit automatically when v1.1.0.6 on pc was terminated.
Summary:
- cannot find Tether service problem
- seems to run but seems slow
- Tether on BB does not exit when Tether on PC is exited.
Is any work being done on fixing these two problems with the 1.4.2 beta?
- cannot connect to service
- Tether on BB fails to exit when Tether on PC is closed
I am using a mac however i have a weird problem with my blackberry bold 9700, i am using ORANGE Poland as a service provider and i have all the apn settings correct however my blackberry keeps disconnecting me from the internet.
Everything stops, however you see packets download and upload but upload goes much higher than download. I have 1.4.2 on my blackberry and 1.1.0.2 on my mac is there anything i can do to stop this? Replugging my blackberry to my mac and starting tether only temporarily fixes the problem :/
See this thread and try developer Tim Speed's updated client, post any further issues relating to the BlackBerry in the linked thread as well please: http://tether.com/uncaught-exception-fix-testing
I finally found out why I wasn't getting packets on my XP machine. McAfee was causing some kind of conflict, so I uninstalled it and installed Kaspersky. Everything works fine now, but I am hoping the Tether developers will investigate further.
Why did Tether stop working at all? What changed? Why are there no packets sent or received? I downloaded and ran the new version on my Storm with no change. Is there a new Mac version that I don't know about that needs to be updated too? I still receive no packets up or down.
I've only seen a few people on the web complain of this issue, but my 9650 on Verizon will randomly reboot while tethered (via bluetooth) to my windows XP laptop. It does this quite often (maybe every 30 mins or so while tethered).
I then have to wait until the phone reboots, and then reconnect via Tether again. My 9650 has plenty of available RAM and has the latest official OS (.732, I think). The current version of Tether that I'm running is 1.1.07, and I have yet to try updating to the newest release (1.4.2). I will do that later tonight, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this issue just in case I come across them with the new version, as well.

Are you using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack and drivers or the WIDCOMM (Broadcom) stack and drivers?
If I go into Device Manager and expand the Bluetooth Radios tree, here is what I see:
Bluetooth Radios
-> HP Bluetooth Module
-> Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator
Is there something else that you would like me to check?
Double click the HP hardware and tell me the driver manufacturer.
When I double-click on "HP Bluetooth Module" it says that the manufacturer is Broadcom
Apply the update found here: broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php
Make sure you have you BlackBerry set to discoverable and try Tether again.
I am still having this same issue, but I have Dell Truemobile 355, running Windows 7 32 bit. Do you know if this requires some sort of upgrade?
I'll do a search, but if you know of anything off the top of your head, I'd appreciate it.
You should be able to apply the same broadcom update.
I downloaded the Broadcom update, but it tells me it's unable to upgrade the software and to contact the mfg of my bluetooth device.
I guess broadcom will not allow the update, I know your adapter is broadcom based but it appears as if you must install Dell specific drivers.

Took me a couple tries, but I've finally gotten a strong Bluetooth connection.
Obviously some kinks to be worked out with this latest version.
I downloaded the software last night to my PC and recieved the same error message, however after a minute I recieved a pop up box asking me what type of Blackberry I was using. I selected the correct model and everything worked as designed after that.
We appreciate the update Joel.

I completely uninstalled Tether, rebooted and reinstalled per instructions. Still no packets!
Read my entry in this thread about how to delete the extra service please.
If you have already used SC delete make certain you have your wifi disabled and any LAN cable disconnected before trying Tether.
I have already used SC delete and disabled wifi and LAN -- no luck.
3 adapters: Local Area Connection, Wireless Network Connection, Tether Network Connection
Is it possible that McAfee could cause a problem? I tried disabling the firewall, but that didn't help.

1.4 asks me update software on phone to 1.1 when opening. everything else seems fine :-)
I tried to install and got this error on my PC:
"An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:
DeleteFile failed; code 5.
Access is denied.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation"
I tried Retry several times and the error just returned.
When I uninstalled 1.4 it said there were some components that didn't uninstall, or something like that.
Please help...I've been without Tether for three weeks now and was hoping this would fix everything!
Fixed that problem... for whatever reason the tbservice.exe file would not delete so I had to delete it manually.
Tether now works for me... but when I run it first on the PC I get "Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support". I clicked to close it and then it all ran fine.
Did a speed test on Speakeasy... got 1.11 Mbps download speed...haven't had a connection that fast before!
Signal strength on my phone was -94dBm.
I was typically in the .4 or .5 range before.i
Still, however, doesn't work after the computer goes to sleep and still requires a re-boot of the computer.
In earlier versions it did come back from sleep, as do my other two computers with older versions...the 1.0.6 and . 7 didn't work after sleeping.
Thanks for posting the revisions and your experience with them.

The developers are indeed working on the issues. When something is available someone will update this thread with further information.
Could you try the following client on your BlackBerry and let me know if anything changes:

Does this happen over USB or Bluetooth?
it happens over usb, bluetooth gives a uncaught exception after some use. I believe it was error 317.
See this thread and try developer Tim Speed's updated client, post any further issues relating to the BlackBerry in the linked thread as well please:

Interesting. Going to try installing some various anti-virus software on a virtual machine and see if I can replicate any issues.

Are you saying you changed nothing and Tether stopped functioning?
There is no updated Mac client, the updated Windows client targets specific Windows issues that are not prevalent on Mac.
I've only seen a few people on the web complain of this issue, but my 9650 on Verizon will randomly reboot while tethered (via bluetooth) to my windows XP laptop. It does this quite often (maybe every 30 mins or so while tethered).
