New Version - 1.4.2 Beta Test - More Bug Fixes
Another new version is being launched today. This will most likely be the last update before we push an update to all of our customers. Let us know if you have any problems!
New in 1.4.2:
-Fixes to the installer, should now be more compatible with peoples computers "vcredist 2005 sp1"
-Fixed TBService installation, now registering properly as "Tether". Fixes a number of network adapter related issues.
-Although users are required to read the ToS before they install it on the PC/Mac, we've decided to include the ToS to first-time users running Tether on the BlackBerry.
-Added waiting dialog in Blackberry app for when entering Registration Code.
-Added Bluetooth ReConnect feature and some other features like Bluetooth logs for debugging bluetooth issues. One specific to the Microsoft Stack and one for Widcomm
Changelog for 1.4:
- Network preferences always pick Tether instead of any other network connection.
- Trapping all possible errors, in order to find the UnCaught exception
- Some performance improvements, may be noticeable on older phones.
- Subscribe to updates from Tether box on E-mail prompt is no longer checked by default
- Implemented USB Reconnect feature for bad USB cables or, accidental disconnects, requires v1.4.0.0 of PC Application

This version will not prompt you to update, until we officially launch it.
Patrick, the link for the PC software isn't working.
The JAD file for the BlackBerry reports version 1.4.0 during the install. Also, when I launch Tether on my desktop now, it reports an error that it can't find the tether service and recommends I close tether and contact support. When I click OK, I get the BlackBerry or Android prompt. (The desktop app also reports 1.4.0.)
Can you try uninstalling Tether from your computer and re-install?

I concur, the first link is not working. I downloaded the full installer from the second link and will just reinstall from that.
Doing the same, thanks.
Let us know if you encounter the same problem as matt.
Links should be fixed. Looks like we only have the setupdrv.exe.

Posting from tethered connection. My BB asked if I wanted to install over what I had but as far as I can tell on both PC and BB the version numbers reported are the same as before 1.4.0
Hm. Wondering if I should wait until we get this all straightened out.
Yes, the numbers are still reporting 1.4 because it's still a 1.4 version. It's just our second iteration, so it won't be showing as 1.4.2 on the BB or PC.

Okay, thanks.
Well, not off to a good start with this new version.
Trying to connect via Bluetooth and my PC is stuck on the "Looking for Tether Service" status. Going on 10 minutes now.
I uninstalled the prior version before installing the new one. Do I need to reboot my PC?
I had to reboot. You may want to check my post below about Enabling the Tether Ethernet Adapter in Device Manager too as that seemed to fix that issue for me.
Thanks for that tip. That was the issue.
I have encountered two issues so far. I am connecting my laptop (running Windows 7 x64) to my BB via Bluetooth.
Everytime I want to use Tether I have to enable my Tether Ethernet Adapter in Device Manager. This has been happening to me since the first release of v1.4.
The second issue (since installing v1.4.2) is that when starting Tether on the PC I get the following error message: Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support. The Tether screen loads behind this error message, and when I click OK on the error message Tether begins working normally.
I'll verify the Adapter issue next time I try and connect. Thankfully I haven't had the error message you described.
This version seems to have fixed the previous issue I had where I would get an error telling me it couldn't find Tether on the device EVERY time on the first attempt to connect. Frustrating.
Hopefully that's gone now, too.
Rebooted the laptop, trying again, we're at the 5 minute mark of "Looking for Tether" status.
I'm looking at the log on my 9700 and at the top it says Tether v1.1.0.7?
I know I installed 1.4.
If I can't connect I'm gonna have to downgrade anyway.
This is crazy.
Installed the latest version and all went well. No more nag message to update and things seem to be running well. The previous beta version gave me problems, but this one seems much better so far. rwgrosser - my log says version 1.1.0.7 too, but if you check your third party installed apps, it should say 1.4. I connected with bluetooth just fine. I deleted prior versions of Tether on both PC and Blackberry, rebooted both, then installed 1.4.2. If thats any consolation.
Yeah, I figured that was just a typo in the logging.
So you didn't have to enable the Tether Network Adapter?
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, if that makes any difference.
Nope, didn't have to enable anything (although I did have to on the previous beta), it worked right out of the gate without a hitch. I'm running vista and so far the start up routine does appear to be a bit quicker. I even shut my PC down since the last post and turned tether off on the phone and restarted everything just to make sure everything was on the up and up. So far, so good! Keeping my fingers crossed, of course.
Ok, the Network Adapter is definitely an issue. It seems to go into disabled mode every time you shut Tether down and has to be re-enabled.
Again, I'm on Windows 7 and am wondering if spadabear is as well.
Other than that, everything else seems to be okay.
I am running Windows 7 x64
Could be a common denominator for us, then.
This is by design, launch Tether on your PC and the adapter should enable itself.
Close Tether, manually enable the Tether network adapter, run Tether, close Tether and the adapter should be disabled by Tether (this is to prevent interference with LAN/WIFI), now launch Tether again and let me know if the network adapter does not re-enable itself automatically.
I can report that it does now enable itself automatically. In v1.4 I had to enable the adapter manually everytime I ran Tether, hence the reason I kept doing it in 1.4.2.
I still have the issue with the error message though.
Upon starting Tether on the PC I get the following error message: Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support.
When I press OK Tether runs normally.
I did a full uninstall before installing v1.4.2
Interesting the software continues to run fine.
On your PC while holding the Windows key on the keyboard and press the 'R' key. This will open a Run dialog, in this dialog type without quotes 'services.msc' and hit Enter. This will open the Windows Services window, look in this list and tell us do you have a single Tether service or multiple services?
I only have one Tether service running.
I am also experiencing an intermittent problem, when Tether connects I can not receive packets and have to do a battery pull on the BB before it will function properly again.
I haven't seen that yet on this version, but the previous (1.1.0.7) recently started doing that.
Looking for an update.
"Upon starting Tether on the PC I get the following error message: Could not find the Tether service, please close Tether and contact support."
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but end up with the same results.
Not sure what else I can do on my end..
Do you show a Tether network adapter? What other network adapters do you show?
Bluetooth Network Connection - Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) Not Connected
Bluetooth Connection (Standard Modem) Disconnected
Local Area Connection - Network Cable Unplugged - Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Tether Network Connection - Network - Tether Ethernet Adapter
Wireless Network Connection - Not Connected - DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card
Wireless Network Connection 2 - Not Connected - Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter
Right click the DW1520 adapter and select disable, reboot your PC for good measure and let me know if you still receive the same message when you launch Tether.
I still get the same error message after following your instructions
I also just realized since updating to this version it no longer asks for my device password. I don't see anything about this change in the changelog, so I thought I'd mention it.
Okay, the adapter issue is cool, but packets/data received is not. I'm at almost 400 packets sent, 6 received and no data received.
That ain't gonna work.
rwgrosser, I uninstalled Tether from my BB did a battery pull then downloaded and reinstalled 1.4.2 and it seems to have helped the situation so far. I've only reconnected a few times as of writing this, but it seems promising.
Did you just do it on the device or the PC, as well?
I'll give that a try.
Just tried again, same thing.
This is via Bluetooth.
Gonna try USB next.
USB connected with no issue.
Tried spadabear's suggestion of uninstalling from device, battery pull, reinstall....same issue when I try to connect via Bluetooth.
Gonna bounce my PC and see what happens.
This worked fine just yesterday when I first installed.
Rebooted laptop, now having another issue.
My device is in the list of possible devices, but the first item is blank and I am stuck on the "Looking for Tether" status.
I had Device Manager opened and watched as the adapter did enable itself, so it's not that.
Should there be two instances of TBService.exe running?
There should be only one instance of the TBService.exe unless something changed that I do not know about.
I have two instances running.
Same information from above:
On your PC while holding the Windows key on the keyboard and press the 'R' key. This will open a Run dialog, in this dialog type without quotes 'services.msc' and hit Enter. This will open the Windows Services window, look in this list and tell us do you have a single Tether service or multiple services with Tether in the name?
There's one called Tether and another called TetherBerry.
1.) Login to your PC as the Administrator or login to an account with Administrative privileges.
2.) Click the Start menu and select run on Windows XP, on Windows Vista and 7 simply click Start then type run into the search and hit the Enter key.
3.) Type cmd into the run dialog and hit enter.
4.) In the prompt type the following four commands without quotes:
a.) "sc stop tetherberry" and hit enter.
b.) "sc delete tetherberry" and hit enter
c.) "sc stop tether" and hit enter.
d.) "sc delete tether" and hit enter.
Uninstall Tether through Add/Remove programs, reboot your PC (very important), install the setupdrv.exe from the following link:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.4.2/setupdrv.exe
You have already downloaded the setup of course, so you may install the 1.4.2 you already have.
I just gave the link for others having a similar issue.
That's all done and only one instance of TBService.exe now.
Still takes several tries to get a clean list of devices to choose from (many times a list shows up with blank lines between devices, or my device and a couple of blank lines).
Or, when I do get a clean list, I get the zero packets/data received issue.
Just want this to simply WORK!
Perhaps there are some issues with previous Bluetooth pairings on your PC, I have never heard of empty locations in the Bluetooth connections window of Tether.
Lucky me.
I guess a better way to put what I said would be have you paired anything to your Bluetooth previously that you do not use anymore and that does not show up in the paired device list?
