Hey Everyone,

Today we are launching an unofficial new version on the PC side and on the BlackBerry. We'd like some testers to try it out and provide any feedback.

If you are experiencing any issues of Uncaught Exceptions, USB Thread Error, random no packets being sent or received, or being forced to restart your computer, this version will hopefully fix all or some of these issues.

In addition to these changes the version numbers have changed from 1.1.0.7 to simply 1.4. It's easier to communicate and better for us to use internally.

Changelog since 1.1.0.7
- Network preferences always pick Tether instead of any other network connection.
- Trapping all possible errors, in order to find the UnCaught exception
- Some performance improvements, may be noticeable on older phones.
- Subscribe to updates from Tether box on E-mail prompt is no longer checked by default
- Implemented USB Reconnect feature for bad USB cables or, accidental disconnects, requires v1.4.0.0 of PC Application*

*There is one bug with the USB re-connect feature we added, so we'll fix that once we officially release this.

Download PC files:
If you already have Tether installed on your machine download this setup:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.4/setup.exe

If not download this version:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.4/setupdrv.exe

Download BlackBerry file:
Open your browser on your BlackBerry and visit the following url:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.4/tether.jad

When running Tether you can ignore the prompt asking you to update!

Hello,

I loaded Version 1.4 and upgraded from Version 1.1.0.7. Everything seems to work just fine. The only thing that may stump some users - It seems like V1.1.0.7 left the Tether Network Adapter in a 'Disabled' state. When first starting V1.4 the user will get a error message "Cannot Connect to Network Adapter". Once changing the Adapter to 'Enabled' everything works just fine. When closing V1.4 the Tether Network Adapter isn't 'Disabled' and isn't a problem after the first use.

No big deal, but it may confuse a beginner.

Thanks for a great product!

Very odd, because Tether usually disables the adapter every time Tether shuts down. I'll let our developers know.

Just to verify after you enabled the adapter the first time you haven't had any issues no matter how many times you start/stop Tether?

Were you having any issues before?

Yes, after enabling the adapter the first time, it worked fine. I started and stopped it several times without issue. The adapter is NOT being disabled with V1.4. No other issues have been noted either with V1.4 or with V1.1.0.7

How do you enable the adapter? I'm getting this error and have sent in a support email but haven't heard anything back yet. I have Windows 7 64bit.

Thanks!

You can enable the adapter by going to Control Panel > Network Connection > Look for the Tether Adapater > Right-click > Select Enable

It sounds like the Tether Service isn't running properly.

It didnt work for my bberry curve 8530 .. it worked on the Pc but i had to leave the old version on my bberry as it would not recieve packets.. unless i used the old version on my phone..but even at that with using the new version on my pc and not on the bberry its still seems like theres less pauses in receiving and sending packets and it seems way faster soo. thanks :)

Krista, thanks for trying it out.

Could you try 1.4 on your BlackBerry? From there could you click on the BlackBerry button when Tether is running and tell me what you see in the View Log?

Seems to be working normally for me. I haven't experienced any issues on the PC or BB side at this point. I played around on speedtest.net a bit trying to see if there where speed improvements but I can't say for sure. The site detects me as being in several different states depending on when I try it (none of which are correct). I am posting this from my desktop connected to my verizon 8330 and will poke around the web for a bit and see if anything happens!

Question: are actual speeds affected by the different hardware blackberry devices/hardware? I know my 8330 doesn't have that much horse power (so ready to upgrade but work issued). I'm just wondering if mobile devices with faster processors and more memory yield better speeds.

To see better performance depends on a number of things. The network connection your device can handle EDGE, 1X or 3G. They are all different technologies which affect your speeds greatly.

I had no problem downloading or connecting. No errors, all works well! I will have to play around with it to see if it is any faster, but so far, so good!

I have been using it all day and I have had a three problems. 1-I was able to be online and use my BB for bbms and phone calls without interuption with the previous version, but not this one. 2) I am having numerous problems with my pc recognizing it is connected to my bb. I have to unplug it/plug it back in numerous times and finally it will recognize it and ask me how I want to connect. 3) I was trying to Skype and kept getting the message that my connection was very slow. Can I go back to the old version??? Had no problems with that one at all.

Most of the bugs we are fixing are related to the PC and not the Mac, so we haven't had to release anything for it yet.

I had no issues and was probably testing for about an hour or so. Did some google researching, visited some sites, even used remote desktop to do some work on my webserver that is co-located and it was very usable!

Updated and connected through bluetooth. Bluetooth connection paired very quickly, almost instantly, as opposed to the 30 seconds to a minute in the previous version. So far everything is working great, I use tether almost everyday, so I will continue to provide more feedback.

Updated to 1.4 on 8330 and PC a few hours ago and so far everything is still working nicely, no sign of the Uncaught Exception error. I'll post if that changes of course, but so far, looking good :)

I'm using Win XP Pro with the latest service packs. (this is on a IBM Thinkpad T60) Same results on a HP Mini 1000 netbook with XP Home Edition, again - with latest service packs.

Had to downgrade to the official release on my BB. Upon initially trying to connect via Bluetooth I could send but not receive packets. I exited the program and restarted it on both BB and PC, but kept getting an error message on the BB saying it could not find a port, exit the program and run it again. I am using the Storm on Telus and running Windows 7 x64. It is much quicker when connecting through Bluetooth now though, which is nice. Would be nice to have an option to save out the log so we can easily send you the info as it is a heck of a lot to copy.

Keep up the great work.
Cheers!

I'm confused, you're using version 1.4 or 1.1.0.7 (official)? If you're seeing an "Could Not Open Port" that usually means that your APN settings are not set, but there shouldn't be any for Telus.

Instead of writing the entire log could you just write what appears to be errors in your log?

I spent a good 4 or 5 hours tethering with my BlackBerry 9530 - Storm1. I upgraded from the current official version number and no issues with the installation or getting started.

GUI comments - I like what you've done with it. You've eliminated the room for accidentally killing the app on the BB and, thus, unintentionally disconnecting from the PC. I also like the addition of seeing the data amounts sent and received from the app as well as on the PC.

Performance comments - performance is definitely improved! While tethering, I was uploading quite a few hundred pictures of different sizes to my Shutterfly account and streaming music from Slacker Radio on the PC. I received two brief phone calls while connected and did not get disconnected at all. Speed of the uploads was a decent speed in my opinion - note I did not have a full strength signal on my BB. I probably had half my bars consistently. Also, while files were uploading, I did some random web browsing and had no complications with everything else going on. Lastly, I was also in and out of apps on my BB, plus uploading files from my PC to my BB.

As you can see, I put my PC (laptop I should say :p) and BB to work for a solid 4 or 5 hours straight. At one point I had forgotten I was even tethering. lol. I use tether quite a bit, especially when I go over seas, like I am doing this week. So, I definitely recognize an improvement and don't see any negatives anywhere. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about any of this feel free to contact me - email is best.

Thanks for the privilege of testing and sorry for the delayed feedback.

I've been getting the "network adaptor" error since upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 last week when trying to open Tether on laptop, so tried doing this update to rectify...getting an error during set up file extraction "error occurred while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5. Access is denied". ???

I saw the post above for the "network adaptor" error to go into Control Panel and enable Tether but I do not have a Network Connections section under CP.

Suggestions?

UPDATE!!!!

I was able to do this update on laptop after another try and took care of my "network adaptor" issue. Also updated on BB and everything is working fine (Tether is running right now to type this post).

Thanks for the great forum!

I have been using the new version for a few days now and up until just a few minutes ago, all was well. I had a re-occurrence of the Uncaught Exception error. I did a battery pull before I thought of saving the log for you guys, so I have no info unfortunately. I hope it was a fluke occurrence, but I'll keep an eye on it and keep the log next time, if it happens again.

Aside from this, I love the new 1.4 version. Particularly, as lyriconsaura noted, the new interface doesn't automatically disconnect after losing the USB connection. This is a godsend as I am one of those people with flaky USB.

As for performance, I didn't notice a difference. Speeds were the same as with previous versions. This could be because I live out in the country and only ever get 1 or 2 bars of service anyways, I've never tried Tether with full service.

Either way, it's still an awesome program! Is there any information that would be particularly helpful to you guys should the Uncaught Exception error occur again?

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64 and Tether 1.4 on my PC and Tether 1.4 on my 8330 Curve, OS version 4.5.0.186 on the Telus network in Canada if any of that helps!

We are still uncertain as to why the uncaught exception is occurring as we have yet to experience it ourselves, we've checked our code over many times and are capturing all the exceptions, we believe this is a issue with the blackberry platform itself. So we need to develop a workaround but to do that we need to find out what is causing the core issue.

The best way you can help is to send us your blackberry Log, you can access this by holding ALT and typing "LGLG" on keyboard phones and
holding the ALT key until it locks, pressing
lock ALT, then typing ",5,5" on SureType keyboards
On virtual keyboards I believe the ALT key is labeled "!?123"

You should be able to copy this log from the menu and paste it into an e-mail. You can send me an e-mail directly at tspeed@tether.com

@redhdgirl417 - I've always wanted a stalker, I love it :P I'll keep ya posted on how this goes!

@tim.speed - I'll keep that in mind. If it happens again, I'll send ya my log. Of the errors reported, have ya noticed a trend with particular BB models or OS versions? It seems pretty random to me from the few posts I've seen on it.

I am currently traveling oversee. Will try the new version when I returned to the States to eliminate any carrier related issues. As a side note, current version (1.0.0.7) are working fine while in China (Window XP (USB & Bluetooth, Storm2 roaming on China Mobile and/or China Unicomm with Vodafone-NL servie plan).

1.4 has fixed problems with resuming from standby so far. Everything is working great. One thing that is annoying is that it keeps asking me to update to the 1.1.0.7 version. If I select "no", it will ask me again the next time I start Tether on my BB. Any suggestions?!

It will keep asking you as it checks for "new versions" every time you run tether. You just have to keep ignoring it as long as you want to try the beta.

@J4m3z420 - Yea, having to click no all the time is a bit annoying, but once this is out of beta, we should be good! I wish there was a settings section in Tether that let us set whether to check for updates and also allow us to set USB or Bluetooth connection etc, it would make startup a little quicker when using the same connection type, but again, its only a minor issue :)

@wyealbert - What version of XP are ya using? I have XP Pro SP3 with all the hotfixes etc on one of my machines and Tether works fine. The only time I have an issue with no packets sent is if I have an active network adapter other than the Tether adapter. If you are on a network, Tether won't work, at least in my experience. But that's not specific to XP, it's the same in Vista and 7.

@tim.speed and any other Tether people reading - The Uncaught Exception error hasn't reoccurred since. I guess it was a random fluke. *fingers crossed*

I am using XP Home Edition. I have disabled the wireless adapter and the LAN, but I still get no packets. I have tried Bluetooth and USB - nothing. Tether used to work great until they made some updates. Very frustrating! My Vista laptop works fine.

I did, the issue would most likely be with the Bluetooth device or driver on the PC.

The log is showing that the a Bluetooth connection was established, but then dropped or broke somehow.

You can try an even earlier version of Tether for the blackberry here:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.4/tether.jad

I see you're using Windows XP, do you know what service pack you are using?

Hmm, on the last screenshot you sent me it shows a lsit of available services... You can try running Tether on the Blackberry and viewing that list again to see if Tether appears on the list.

Thanks,
