Hi Everyone,

Here is a test version for fixing the uncaught exception on the Blackberry device.
Open up your Blackberry browser and install it here

http://tether.com/tim/Tether.jad

You'll notice that the version number is 1.4.2.1 when installing
But when viewing the log it will show as 1.1.0.7, this is as intended to make our update servers think you have the latest version.

When responding to the post please tell me your Blackberry model and OS version number "Can be found under options -> about", and let me know if this fix is working for you.

Fingers Crossed.

Wow I figured there would be a response by now, anyone using this update that has been experiencing an "uncaught exception" on their BlackBerry?

If so did this revision repair the issue?

Me too, I posted a link to this post from a few others where people were saying they experienced this issue. Maybe everyone is away on vacation :)

Wow... after endless problems with BT with recent updates this seems to have fixed it. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Can you explain what you changed in the update to finally remedy the BT issue?

Thanks!

Well, I spoke too soon. Worked once and now refuses to work again despite phone/laptop reboots and everything else..

Like others, it gets hung searching for a TB connection via BT. : (

Sorry, this was a fix for an uncaught exception issue on the blackberry that would cause Tether to crash.

Maybe I can help with the Bluetooth issue, bluetooth is a tricky thing to implement in general, there is a total of 4 or more different bluetooth systems that need to be integrated for Tether to work with all Bluetooth devices with some we cant even get access too, and even then bluetooth devices can be temperamental. Right now we have only been able to implement the 2 most popular ones, Microsoft and Broadcom/Widcomm

But let me know what version of windows you are using, what model blackberry you have, and what make and model of bluetooth adapter you have, and maybe I can help.

Thanks Tim.

Tether with Bluetooth worked fine up until a couple months ago when I ran newer Tether updates. So at least previously it worked with the configuration below.

BlackBerry 9530 (Storm)

Laptop: running Win 7 64 bit

Listed under "Bluetooth Radios" in Device Manager:
Dell Wireless 360 Bluetooth Module (Driver provider: CSR plc)
Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator

Appreciate in advance any help you can give!

Looks good.

A few more questions, to help me find where things might have gone wrong.

What is the current version of your Tether PC application? It will show in the bottom right hand corner while running Tether.

What was the previous version of Tether you were using on the PC that was working for you.

What is the current version of Tether you are running on your Blackberry?

What was the previous version of Tether you were using on your Blackberry?

Hi Tim,

Tether 1.4 is running on the laptop and the phone is 1.4.2 (the update you released).

I believe it was the original 1.0 version that both were running successfully. I skipped a couple of updates before one right before the beta.

So 1.1.0.2 maybe? or Earlier

We made some minor bluetooth modifications from before 1.1.0.6/7 and then some new ones in 1.4

Try installing Tether 1.1.0.6/7 from here
http://tether.com/download

let me know how that works for you,

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately I have tried those (prior to posting asking for help) but they didn't work either.

The thing I can't figure out is that both the phone and laptop are running Tether in BT mode, and both are connected via Bluetooth (this happens as soon as I start Blackberry Device Manager). But Tether on the laptop still cannot see the phone...

Blackberry Device manager or Desktop manager?

Try closing both of those if they are open and run Tether and Select Blackberry Bluetooth.
Note that Tether may start Device manager on its own. This is ok.

Sometimes the list may also look blank but it really isn't, their may be blank items added because the Bluetooth adapter was unable to retrieve the names of those devices. So try clicking blank areas of the list to see if anything highlights.

If absolutely nothing is on the list, you will need to pair the Blackberry to your computer through your Bluetooth device manager.

You should be able to force your Bluetooth adapter to use the Microsoft drivers instead of the CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio), I'm not certain this will help the situation but it may.

I run the same CSR plc drivers that came through Windows update, I do recall the Bluetooth adapter using Microsoft drivers prior to the Windows update.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I tried that. Is it just the "Generic Bluetooth Adapter" that I would substitute it with?

Thanks

When I re-download and select the tether link in my download folder on my Storm, I get a message that reads "module handle 7793 not found." What is this?

I have been having this problem along with the "unable to find an available port" error repeatedly. After downloading this update it worked all last night, but then today it decided to give me the errors again. Not sure why it's doing this.

I'm using a sprint Blackberry Curve 8330 OS 4.5 with Windows 7 on the computer.

App is v1.4.2 and computer is v1.4. Downloading 1.4.2 for the computer now to see if that helps.

You started to get the uncaught exception again, or the unable to find an available port error?

Unable to find an available port means that the current network you are connected to does not have the capability to open a udp connection to our Tether servers. Generally there are multiple networks that a phone to connect to and sometimes one goes down or gets out of range, so a phone will hop on to another, causing this issue.

I get both errors, though not at the same time.

I can be using the software and then it will cut off with the Uncaught Exception error. When I try to use the application again, it will either exit out and give me the Uncaught Exception error or it will give me the Unable to Find an Available port error. I'm not sure what causes it to change between errors.

Right after you get the uncaught exception on your blackberry can you send me the BlackBerry device log.

you hold ALT and press L G L G
this will bring up the log and you can copy it by pressing the blackberry menu key and selecting copy.

You can then paste the log into an e-mail and mail it to tspeed@tether.com

This log can provide me with valuable information as to why the application may be crashing.

Thanks,
-Tim

this will display the blackberry device log, you can then copy it by pressing the menu key and selecting the copy option.

If you could then paste that into an e-mail and mail it to tspeed@tether.com , that would be awesome.

Hey Tim,

Sorry bout the lack of replies, I kinda forgot to check back in! For me, the beta (1.4.2.0) seems to have fixed my uncaught exception errors, so I haven't been back here recently.

But I saw this tonight and figured I'd give it a shot and see if I can get ya some feedback. So right now I am running your beta version (1.4.2.1) on my Curve (8300) and the regular beta version (1.4.2.0 I think) on my PC (Win7 x64 Ultimate). I connect via USB and have OS version 4.5.0.186.

I've got a good few hrs of Tether usage ahead of me tonight still, if anything breaks, I'll let ya know.

Thanks again for trying to hard to get these issues fixed, we all appreciate it!

Well I'm glad Tether is now working for you :)

Are you currently using this version 1.4.2.1?
Or are you using 1.1.0.4 or earlier?

Sorry couldn't tell which one you meant from your post.

Thanks,
-Tim

I kept getting the uncaught exception message on the BB with an older version of Tether and I just downloaded the version from this post. So far, so good but if I have any problems with it working I will be sure to check back with you. I'm glad I wasnt the only one having this problem and there was already a solution in the works. Tether is a great app and I'm very pleased.

I have a BB curve 8330 using OS 4.5.0.127

Done. The only thing I have noticed that's similar between all the errors I've gotten is the timeline. It always seems to be about 4 days. Not sure if this is significant or random coincidence.

Thanks!

Interesting, I'll keep this in mind. It is probably just "Random Coincidence". But the universe being relative and all, maybe not so much.

I've made a change to the code that I think may fix things, as it seems to still be a message queue error, similar to the last one, but coming from a different spot in the code.
I'll give it a little bit of testing and I should have another test release within the next couple days.

Thanks again,
Were you streaming video or running a voice / video communication program like skype when it errored?

My current theory is that its our logging system thats causing the issue, but its possible that its also our packet queuing one.

Nope, the last time I was just browsing the web. Was actually on the futureshop website if I recall correctly. I believe my Xbox was also downloading in the background as well.

I haven't noticed any common program or whatever that has been running when the error occurs. I don't have a regular internet connection because I live out in the country, so Tether sometimes runs for 12 -14 hrs a day and I do a lot with it. Torrents, Steam, YouTube, Xbox, I do it all with Tether. If it'll help, I'll keep track of what I'm doing when the error occurs.

Thanks for the info, it's great you are able to do so much with Tether!

I was just wondering if the device was potentially becoming overloaded. By trying to handle too much at once. But this doesn't seem to directly be the case.

It is most likely that the packet counter I added in v1.1.0.5 and up is causing too much extra load on the device.

I've made some optimizations that may help. I'll try to provide a version for testing later today. If this does not solve the problem, I'll add an option to disable the packet counter.

Okay, I've been running the version that Patrick originally posted at the top of the other thread.

Is that the latest and greatest or have there been other iterations since.

Anyway, I've been running this version for a few weeks now and just today encountered the uncaught exception error. Actually, the first error was a bluetooth error, then the Tether error.

Should I bother incorporating the above fix since this is the first and only time I've gotten the error?

I'm running a 9700 with OS 5.0.0.862, which is a beta OS, but I've had it on the device for a week with no problems until today.

Thanks in advance,
Roger

It's up to you, this may fix future issues iterations of that issue from occurring.

But we will be releasing a version through our update system "1.4.3.0" within the week or so that will contain these potential uncaught exception fixes I've been working on.

So the choice is yours,
