I am considering getting this tether program for my BB tour and Alltel phone service..I asked Alltel and they say they charge for this. It seems that they do not quite know what this is and also seems to me that they would only see this as internet connection which is unlimited in my plan.. Am I correct in assuming this? and reading all the problems people seem to have should I be worried about this just not really working and turning into one of those computer nightmares that go on forever..

Thanks
Ted

There are several discussion through out the Forums about this.

In general, Carrier referring "Tethering" is when you are using the DUN and utilizing carrier's "tether" gateway. It is outside the Blackberry internet service plan, and completely different with TETHER program here.

You are correct on TETHER application here is utilizing BlackBerry internet Service, and it is within the BalckBerry data plan.

With that being said, it does not eliminate the carrier to "determine" if you were "abusing" the unlimited data usage, and charge you anything in addition under the service agreement, unlikely but possible.

So far, there has not been any reported cases HERE that anyone got any additional charges from carrier.

Actually, I got charged for tethering by my carrier (Bell Canada) when I updated my Tether on my BB from 1.1.0.4 to 1.1.0.6. I was charged 3 cents per MB. I asked the Tether support team for help and they sent me the link for 1.1.0.4 and I've been problem free ever since. I guess the update allowed my carrier to see that I was using Tether? I've been using Tether for a littile over three months and that was the only problem I've had. I get between 1.51-2.03mb/s. Which is decent since I think my BB 9700 only supports up to 3.6mbs. When I tether directly using BB Desktop Manager, I've gotten over 3mb/s. Still, I'm a happy Tether customer.

To add, you asked if you should be concerned about it not working. Most of the problems are quickly resolved. One carrier (which happens to be mine) is the one that is taking longer, but they are working on it. There is a free trial of the software, so download it, and see if it works for you.

From what I understand the cell network just sees you using your phone as per normal. Tetherberry and laptop are "hidden" if you will. Mind you, using your laptop will probably use up more data if you are downloading files etc. This in turn may cause the carrier to notice the extra activity and start investigating why and keeping an eye on you. There is no real reason for them to get upset with you using Tetherberry, accept that they are not making the extra money for the unrealistic plans they have for data.

Personally, unlimited in my mind is just that, unlimited. You offered me the plan, now go away. Don't ask me for more money because I'm using what you agreed to. I do use Tetherberry sparingly as to not cause any flags to go up on my account. No file D/L's, just checking emails and some of my favorite forums.

I'm wondering what might have changed recently with tether... I used the trial and the internet usage using tether came up in my first bill as Blackberry usage. "Sweet", I thought and went ahead and bought my copy of tether.
You would expect that tether would work differently because of the app running on the phone, syphening data back to the pc. It seems to me, after being charged full casual data rates for one week of $300 that tether ain't fooling anyone.
Has anything changed with this latest version of tether? 1.0.7
Thanks!
