TetherBerry for iPod Touch
Tue, 10/13/2009 - 20:56
TetherBerry for the iPod touch would be terrific.
Before anyone tells me to go buy a iPhone please hear me out.
My provider does not offer a Iphone. The area where I live does not have the proper 3g networks available.
There are multiple posts on the internet from people looking to "tether" their iPod touch to their blackberry.
Thats actually how I came across TetherBerry and will be a proud owner come morning.
Blackberry is great but my iPod touch has alot more apps available and alot that require internet.
So just wondering if it would be possible on the software side? I have seen cables that go from mini usb to the required end to fit into a ipod.
Thanks Everyone!
wwww.benm.at check out the page and try to understand it but it is all there for the iphone
This is very important to me also!
I'm ready to be a beta tester for this.
James
At this time we do not have any plans for this, but it has been requested a lot. I'll talk it over with our team soon, to see what their thoughts are.

Would the team consider custom development of this type of app? I am looking for someone to develop this type of solution for me.
I'd like to connect my ipod touch via cable to my blackberry and have the touch use the Tether connection. Let's talk $, what would it take?
please contact me: rhythmco at yahoo.com
Thanks, Chris
PS: I imagine that such a solution would require jailbreaking the touch, that is not a problem.
Is there any developments for a tether application for the ipod touch or the ipad? Is there one on the way?
When will this talk happen?
And if your dev team wants to try it, then how long from concept to field testing?
James
At this time we have no plans to continue with this until we have completed development some other odds and ends.

Well how long would it take to complete those odds and ends???? This would be a great opportunity for you guys to full advantage of all the people out there who would LOVE and will PAY for a app like this. Lots of people (including ME) love their Blackberrys to death but would also like to carry their ipod touches with them to access the internet.
Please reconsider and really think about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would really love this too. I've been looking forever.
I too would really LOVE this! I've been all over the web searching for a way to do this. The only reason why I would ever buy tetherberry is for this purpose only. I usually don't travel with my personal laptop, and if I do travel and take a laptop it would be my work laptop and I would get reimbursed for any internet access needed while I'm traveling.
Just know that you are missing out on bringing in money. There is a demand out there, just google it. We aren't the only ones that are requesting this. People would so pay for this app! I LOVE my iPod Touch and I LOVE my BB - I don't want to have to switch to an iPhone.
Just think - there are ppl out there that are not willing to give up their BB's, for every one of us with a BB and a touch that's $50 a pop.
Just saying. The sooner the better.
*One more add: I just noticed in my network settings on my touch that there is a VPN configuration...so if you do implement the bluetooth that you're currently testing, could I then use tetherberry for my touch? Or do I have to have the software loaded on my touch...?? I'm not really familiar with this app since I don't currently have it on my BB. But that might not even work....sorry...thinking out loud.
does the ipod touch have internet when you buy it or are you all talking about the iphone?
Yes the iPod touch has internet access through wifi only. So if you're not in a wifi hot spot you can't go online, which is why we need tetherberry to create an app for the touch.
i to would like this very much. plus lets venture out a little farther
how about the motorola driod why cant the tetherberry work on this
If you have a laptop or PC with Windows7 on it you can tether your blackerry to it with Thetherberry and then run connectify from www.connectify.me and create a wi-fi hotspot to connect your itouch or iphone. Just thought I would offer another option...
But sometimes you'd like to surf the web on your iPod Touch and not have your laptop with you, etc. I'm also very interested in having the TetherBerry work with the iPod Touch. It seems to give you the best of both worlds (BlackBerry on Verizon and iPod Touch Safari browser, etc).
I would like to add my vote for support for the ipod touch. I was lucky to get a 32G 3G touch for Christmas and was dreaming of tethering it using the Bluetooth networking built-in. Apparently the Bluetooth is only for audio, and a limited range of devices (none of my 3 Bluetooth headsets work with it). For those times I don't have WiFi coverage and without my laptop, it would be great to be able to use this Tetherberry for this.
I'm glad to see I am not the only one wanting this feature!
Thanks to wicamper for posting about www.connectify.me . I use tether to connect my netbook to the internet and run connectify to open a wifi spot that anyone can connect to when we are outside of the office.
FYI. Connectify ony works with windows 7. But works great!
We're compiling a list of things our customers want. I'm adding this onto the list since it's frequently asked for.

Thanks Patrick! Just knowing that this is being added to the wish list makes me happy!!!
I'd love it as well, but you will probably need to jailbreak your Touch to make it work. I'm not sure that Apple would approve this app.
Does anyone make a cable that directly connects an iPod to either Mini or Micro USB?
It is too bad that Apple crippled the Bluetooth on the Touch.
I just watched the product announcement over at Apple.com for their new iPad. It has full Bluetooth 2.1 (per Jobs) and is otherwise essentially an oversized (but impressive) iTouch. I think this may be elevate the appeal of the Blackberry App.
@Dubai - I can't carry an iPad in my purse - I can however fit my Touch in my purse so I'm sticking with my Touch for now, especially since I just got my touch for Christmas. Not all of us that have a touch are going to drop them immediately for an iPad. Just saying :)
Since a Touch application will run on an iPad, we would all benefit from this app. My point is that that the program could be make more sales for Tether because people may use the Touch as an adjunct to their Blackberry.
this needs to happen.
I am going to add my comment because I feel that the more that do the more likely you are to make one. Most people hate AT and T and if you managed to make the ipod blackberry tetherable you would make millions. Comon guys there are thousands of app developers out there that could help you pull this off.
BEG BEG BEG pleeeeeese. Pretty please
id like to see this happen too. please
I too will post only to show my interest in this to hopefully push the team into developing it. I would buy the app in a heartbeat, if it could work with my ipod touch :D
An iPod tether solution would be an excellent addition to the product family. I am not a iphone fan, that's why I am stick to Blackberry. However, I do like the iPod Touch. If there can be a solution to make it tethering with my Blackberry, that just made the iPod Touch a PERFECT personal entertainment device.
Please, Tether, Let it happen!
Curious, why wouldn't you just use your BlackBerry instead of using the iPod touch? This is a question for our engineering team.

me personally - I love the apps available on the touch, the screen, the tactile "smartness", the wysiwyg, overall just seems like a refined version of whats available out there...
Because there is no comparison for the internet usability and experience delivered by the ipod touch. The large screen, brilliant display, interactive functions like zoom, and correct display of java script is priceless. It's like having a mini computer in your pocket where the blackberry is like having a phone with email capabilities. Also there are many apps that run better on the touch such as the medical drug references and dictionaries i use constantly for nursing.
I for one do not wish to change over to at and t for the iphone. Everyone i know is on verizon and besides i still have a year left in my contract. I'm ready to buy your solution.
I would personally choose the browser on the itouch than bb simply because the screen is bigger and easier to use.
I'm figuring that once you develop for the itouch....it will work just the same for the new ipad which I'm considering switching to.
Have you ever tried the blackberry browser vs the safari browser on an Ipod touch? Safari is infinitely superior! It has more support for websites, its considerably easier to use... and you can actually go to websites like rbcbankusa.com to check your online banking and not get Chinese scripts all over your screen! I'll voice my vote for a tether from blackberry to itouch! ATT just doesn't have the data coverage to merit the use of an Iphone and Blackberry just doesn't have *that* capable of a browser!
Personally, I would never looking for a device that could do everything. Anything out there that market for "one thing does all" will always ended up that could do anything good!
I view Blackbeery is an excellent phone and email/message communication device, and hoping RIM will never losing that sight and continue improve their device by focusing on that aspect. As for iPod Touch, I would love the innovated technology that are fully benefited by those applications available for the Touch, and it will also continue growing in that aspect.
With that in mind, a Tether enabled iPod Touch with a Blackberry would be the ideal world.
In essence you guys want the Tether desktop application running on a Touch? I don't think this is possible over bluetooth and you would need a jailbroke touch if there is such a thing to get it done on wifi. This also limits what blackberrys would be supported.
I think it's a great idea, but I don't see it happening.
Now on an android device this would be possible, but it also would need to be rooted so to speak....I think as I don't have one.
in reply to phankinson.
The reason I would like to see tethering on the touch is because the touch has more features and apps available but unfortunately many require the internet.
I use my tether berry quite often but I don't always want to be bothered with carrying my net book where the iPod touch would be no trouble to pack around.
I must say I am happy with the response to this suggestion but not surprised. I felt it would be a great feature when I originally posted this thread and by the response so do many others!
Interesting thoughts everyone! I've made the recommendation to our team. The unfortunate problem at this moment is we are small team, so we are pushing all of our resources to the Android release first.

Thanks for the update Patrick.
So this idea isn't dead just on hold?
It's absolutely on hold, until we can get more resources to put towards it.

Maybe I'm not getting it but...what is the point of having Tether on a iPod Touch when it has no signal to share? I think the true solution is that you would want your Blackberry to cast a Wifi signal so your iPod Touch could connect to it....correct me if I'm wrong... I really want to understand...
The idea here is to utilize the Touch bluetooth capability to tether with Blackberry and make Touch internet accessible from anywhere.
I don't think there is any possibility to make Blackberry a wi-fi access point.
I didn't think about doing it over bluetooth, this would indeed be a good addition. I also do not believe you could do it over wifi, it's locked down pretty tight I imagine.
Bluetooth may be open on the iPad. If you look at the PDANet's setup for a Blackberry, you essentially just use the Bluetooth PAN settings on the recipient device. The problem is that the Touch has locked down its Bluetooth stack. You'd have to jailbreak it and reenable stuff.
I looked at using a Bluetooth headset on a Touch for VOIP and I didn't see anyone having solutions to reinsert that part of the stack.
I amm soo glad to see I am not the only one who had this dream and notion that bb+ iPod touch combo is the best of both worlds.. I solely began looking @ tether berry as a way my bb bold would be able give the internets to his best friend the iPod touch and although it is not available at this time am glad to see this thread is going strong.
I understand that with tether you would need a cable for the tethering. However i do know with other phones such as winmo, android, iPhones etc. Are able to run as wifi hotspots using pdanet app. Is there anyway that a bb can do the same?? From what I've researched so far the only way to make a bb a wifi hotspot is through this device by cradlepoint the phs300 which currently costs like $179 which pretty much sucks and is why Im interested in tetherberry. In addition to that I wouldn't want to pay another 200 bucks for another device I'd have to carry around. I just want my iPod touch and bb to best friends and share the internets with eachother. Those are my 2 cents k thx bai
I created an account to post solely to request this feature. In addition to the iPod Touch, the iPad is about to come out and I know many people that want to buy the WiFi only iPad and tether 3g from their blackberry.
There is a program for Android that creates a wifi hotspot and I am thinking about buying a Nexus One strictly to have this feature. Any updates on progress?
No updates yet. We'll keep everyone posted.

Gotta add to the list. I have already purchased tether twice for two different blackberry devices. I will purchase it a third time if you come out with tether for the iPod touch. I think this would be great.
There are more iPod touch users than there are Droid users. Hook us up.
yeah...count me in on wanting to tether on my Bold's data plan with an Ipad - especially with bluetooth...thinking of buying one and definitely would if "The Team" can figure this one out. Good Luck!
ubertether
The only way we can see this happening is over Wifi, not Bluetooth as like you guys have said it's locked down.
If we did get it to work over Wifi that means any Wifi enabled device would be able to connect to it including the iPad.
We've been in discussions a little deeper and it seems like BlackBerry doesn't give enough access for us to create a "Wifi Access Point". We are still looking into it and hoping we can do something.
