Phone use while tethered?

I'm very new to this and buying a smart phone for the first time. I'm considering a blackberry only because of this device. Can the phone be used while it is used for tethering. If not is there any other phone or a verizon or sprint service that would allow this. Thanks.
In short answer: Yes, you can always use the phone while tethering.

If your on Verizon your connection will be "paused" while you talk, I'm not sure about other providers.
Only on a 3G connection can you do both data and voice...such as on AT&T.
autobot is right, your connection will be "paused" while the phone is in use if you are on Verizon. but it works very well, usually.
