I just used the SpeakEasy.net SpeedTest to compare Verizon tethering and TetherBerry.

- I connected to the Internet using TetherBerry and ran the test twice, once against the SE (SpeakEasy) San Francisco server and once against their Atlanta server. I got roughly 900 kbps down/250 kbps up.

- I shut down TB and initiated a Dial-up Connection for normal VZW tethering and ran the same test twice. For the San Fran server, I got 1200+ kbps down/220+ up on both runs. For the ATL server, I got 1500+ kbps down/570 kbps up on the first run, and 1600+ kbps down/500+ kbps up on the second run.

- I disconnected the dial-up connection and re-ran TB to connect to the Internet again through TB. I re-ran the same test again against the same two servers. Again, I got a consistent 900+ kbps down/250+ kbps up.

I kept my browser open to the SpeedTest page through all this testing. Each time, after a test or changing my connection type, all I did was click the server name again to re-run the test against that server.

So, it seems that straight VZW tethering (I don't use the VZW Connection Manager) is significantly faster than using TB.

Just FYI. YMMV.

Thanks Stuart. That is very useful information.

I would be interested to know what phone you are using. I can only get 360 kbs down and 85 kbs up on my 8830 with TetherBerry, even in good reception areas.

Thanks,
Steve

I have a Storm 9530. It's the only Blackberry with EVDO Rev A. Others are EVDO Rev 0.

The difference (on paper) is that Rev A is 50% faster on downloads, and 10X (yes, 1000%) faster on uploads. In practice, I'm not sure the Storm exceeds the other BBs by quite that much, but it is definitely faster. I had a Pearl 8130 that I was using for tethering for almost a year before I got the Storm. The difference is especially noticeable on uploads. E.g. if I was tethered with my Pearl, and sent an email with a big photo or an MP3 attached, it would take a couple of minutes to get out of my Outbox. With the Storm, sending a similar email, the message will get out in well under a minute. Usually under 20 or 30 seconds.

Storm 9530

Did some new tests with a better signal and received the following results

VERIZON VZAccess

  • Download    1308Mbs
  • Upload         172Mbs

TetherBerry

  • Download    759-Mbs - 1012Mbs
  • Upload        175Mbs - 302Mbs

Interesting... While my download was 27% slower using TetherBerry, my upload
was 46% faster.

I would like to see more consistent throughput with TetherBerry.  Even
VZAccess has a range, the TetherBerry seems to have a different up to 25% on the
download and 43% on the upload.

How are you using VZW without the VZAccess Manager.

Install the BB Desktop Manager. Connect the phone via USB. Use the Windows Dial-up Networking Wizard to create a new dial-up connection. Select the BB as your modem, and tell it to dial the number "#777" (for Verizon). Find the advanced options and turn off Hardware Flow Control (I think - or turn it on, if it's Off by default). You don't need a username or password.

To use it, make sure the BB Device Manager is running (you don't need Desktop Manager running) and your phone is connected. Then just initiate a dial-up connection.

This also works with Bluetooth connections. I used BT connections with my Pearl, but I never got that to work with my Storm, and now I'm using TetherBerry, so it's moot.

I get a consistant 30-50KB/sec download speed. Not the greatest, but most likely limited by A) Telus B) My phone and C) Tetherberry server. Either way, it's internet where I never had it before.
