Packets (and data) stop receiving while using tether

Almost every session of using tether with my BlackBerry Tour the packets stop receiving after a while. The only way to start receiving again is to unplug the phone from the USB, plug it back in and restart tether on the phone and computer.

I emailed tether but still haven't gotten an answer.

Anyone else have this problem?

Any suggestions?

Sounds similar to my problem.

Another question: can we get notified of responses in the forum or do we have to check back every day?

Sorry for the delay in a response, I guess support is overwhelmed lately. I can tell you that you do actually have to come back and visit. This is custom code for the forum and that option isn't added yet, I hope it is soon aswell.

Now on to your problem, what is your PC OS? What is your desktop and phone software revisions?

Is this predictable in any way, any one thing that sets it off?

Thanks for replying.

My PC OS is Vista 32 bit.
Desktop software revision is v1.1.0.2
Phone software revision is v1.1.0.2
(I'm assuming you're asking what version of tether)
Phone is Blackberry Tour

I think it's predictable in that it happens every time I'm using tether. Typically I have to disconnect the phone and then reestablish tether on the pc and phone and then it'll work fine.

What has happened a few times is that when I try to re-open tether on the PC I get the tether dialog box but not the USB, Bluetooth or other little box.

This issue maybe happening because you are receiving an SMS or a phone call at the same time you are connected. It should resume by itself after it temporarily disconnects.

If you were on a 3G connection this wouldn't happen.

I'm on 3g and it has nothing to do with calls or texts.

As a matter of fact, when I receive a call or text I see no interruption of data, of if there is it's so brief it's unnoticeable.

Next time this happens check the log for Tether by clicking the BlackBerry key while the Tether app is running and choose the "View Log" option, and post those log entries back here if you don't mind.

I have experienced the same thing but like Patrick said when I look at my phone to see what's going on I always have a new email or text message, but I'm not on 3G.

There's no way for me to copy the entire log, and everything looks normal except the last line:

Java.io.ioexception: pending

I only wanted to see if there was an error, I didn't need the whole log.

I have seen a few Tour issues, but I haven't heard of the popup dialog not showing up at all on the phone app. I'm guessing it has something to do with BlackBerry OS 5 but I don't have any information as to what.

This happens occasionally with version 1.1.0.1 and my BB Bold (9000). It doesn't have the OS 5 on it.

Another issue, which may or may not be related and others experiencing is that Tether just seems to close on the blackberry without notice. Happened 3 times the other night. No warning, just exits, and only on the blackberry that I've noticed. I have to re-run it and re-establish connection. This seems to be a seperate issue to the disruption of packet transmission.

Check your Software Event Log in Windows, it may be that Tether is crashing.

It could also be crashing on the BlackBerry, you know when you exit Tether on either the PC or the BlackBerry the other app closes itself. So if it were crashing on either platform (phone or pc) it would cause the other app to close.

If you do find anything in the Log about it, post it back here if you don't mind.

Is there any reason your not running the updated Tether verson 1.1.0.2 ?

Hello, I run into the same problem with my 3 Blackberry Tours and Tether accounts.
(I have one account and my wife has her account and our son's account.)

I will run tether and sometimes as soon as 2-3 minutes it will stop receiving packets, other times it can run for an hour, but it always seems to stop receiving packets.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit, 1.1.0.2 on the laptop and on my Verizon Tour.

I can't find any one thing that sets off the problem, and the logs don't ever show an error message.

Like I said, I have 3 accounts in the house, and it really is annoying to have to constantly reset the connection.

EXACT same issue here... except I've gone from a Vista to Windows 7 64bit and same problems.

I'm getting pretty irritated about this.

Was your installation of Vista also 64bit? Do you have a Tether network adapter? Is you wifi disabled?

Vista was 32, as are the other two computers. New computer is Windows 7 64 bit. Don't know what a Tether network adapter is, but when I hover over the connection icon it says "Network" so, yes? Wifi is disabled.

Looks like the beta isn't working.

Been frustrating me a lot this week. I wish I could do more than complain, but lately it has stopped just as quick as I can get it going.

Same here... and the support, or lack thereof, has been terrible.

Something is interfering with the Tether network adapter installation, could you open the Windows Device manager, highlight Tether under the "Network adapters" tab then right click and select "Uninstall". Reboot your PC.

Open Windows Device Manager again after the PC has been rebooted and click on the "Action" menu then click "Add legacy hardware".

Click next on the dialog your shown, then click the radio button "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)", click "Show All Devices" and the "Next" button, click the "Have Disk" button, click "browse" from the dialog that appears and browse to the Tether installation folder in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tether" and click the "qrkis.inf" file and click the "Open" button, click the "Ok" button and now you should see a window listing "Tether Ethernet Adapter" if you do not you must repeat the process carefully, select the "Next" button and then "Next" again for the final installation.

If you receive any error message please take a screenshot and provide a link or write the error down and post it here.

Open Windows Device Manager again after the PC has been rebooted and click on the "Action" menu then click "Add legacy hardware".

Make sure you highlight your computer in the box below or the "Add hardware" option will not show up.

Hope that helps

The next time Tether stops could you click Options then Status on your BlackBerry and provide you 'Signal' number?

It varies, but you said in an earlier post that data stops at -90dBm and that's not true. For example, right now I have -97dBm and I'm getting packets fine.

I should have said "begins" to lose the data connection at around -90 dBm, meaning the connection can no longer be considered stable.

Using the new version of both desktop and BB software and no problems to report so far. Been online for about an hour and no interruptions.

***EDIT:

Things still look good. I have never had a connection last this long. I am really happy with this version!

I don't know how to explain this, so I will just spit it out.

The packets still stop coming, and they still stop the internet connection. They cause the triangle to appear over the network connection icon in the system tray.

The difference is, if I wait long enough, the packets all come in a flood and the connection reestablishes itself.

And you both are receiving a good signal?

broadwayblues

Yes. I still get random disconnects, but now they are much more infrequent, but the packets do stop coming in for 10-20 seconds before the connection reestablishes itself. I often have 4-5 bars when this happens.

Are you receiving text messages during those interruption?

I understand that text messages disrupt a CDMA connection, and I have received text messages and had the connection remain strong.
This is just completely random when the data and packets stop. I have gone so far as to totally turn off text messages in the firewall settings just to see if that affected the packet loss and it hasn't.

Thanks for the info. Any way or possibility that you can try on a different pc and/or OS client? This way, it can isolate the issue to either the BB device or PC client. It would help to further diagnose the cause of your specific issue.

I have 3 tours and 3 tether accounts and two laptops. It is the same story with every one of them. I honestly think this is a Verizon Tour issue. One laptop has Win 7 32 and the other has Win 7 64 bit.
I have covered a lot of this on the beta forum.

Exact same problems here, and three laptops and three different blackberries as well (9630, 8520, 8330) so it's not a Tour problem... I've posted all this information before. It's not computer or phone specific.

I understand this is frustrating for you guys. It is for us as well, especially since we can't reproduce it.

You mentioned you're seeing a "Triangle" over the network connection when it cuts out? The only time I've seen that on my device is when I lose connection or when I'm roaming.

If you guys are using the latest version, we've added a lot of tracking in our "View Log" option. When you stop receiving packets, are you still sending or receiving on the phone? Can you copy the View Log and put it here?

I just noticed this in the log:

"IOExeption while writing to
UdpConnection:
java.io.IOException: Max retries"

That's on my log, but the connection has resumed and I'm now receiving packets...

If you guys are seeing this, it means you've lost connection to our servers. It really sounds like you guys keep losing connection to the cell towers.

I'd be interested to know if you guys could stream audio from Nobex consistently for a few hours without it skipping.

Nope...because I live 500 meters from the Sprint tower with good signal and when Tether stops receiving packets (constantly) within seconds I get on my phone and search the web with zero problem.

yeah that is the thing that makes me so mad. When Tether craps out, I can go and surf the web on the phone just fine. The arrows in the right upper corner are going up and down like the phone is still connected to the internet, but no packets receive even though I can get on the internet just fine.

Do you have the wifi on your PC disabled and any Lan cables disconnected?
