New Tether 1.1.0.3
Hi Everyone,
We're currently testing out a new BlackBerry version, 1.1.0.3. This version has a few changes.
1) Automation for users on North American carriers such as AT&T, Rogers, T-Mobile, and others. No longer do you manually need to set your APNs for these carriers.
2) A pop-up to allow us to send the download instructions to your email address.
3) Minor usability changes & better logging.
4) Trials will only begin after the first few packets are sent.
All-in-all we are very excited with this version because these are all changes to maximize user experience.
We'd like to have you test out this version and provide us any feedback or any problems you have. If you are on a North American carrier we ask that you delete your APN settings to see if our product connects automatically. You can do that by going to: Options > Advanced Options > TCP/IP.
To try the new version please follow these instructions:
1) On your BlackBerry, open your default browser and visit: http://tether.com/tim/Tether.jad
2) Run Tether on your BlackBerry and try running it.
3) Report here in the forums with any problems or if it works fine for you. Let us know your carrier and BlackBerry model.
P.S., we're trying to compile a list of carriers that charge for APN usage. Please let us know if you know if your carrier does or does not charge for APNs.

Patrick, will removing the APN settings effect any other applications? Will it hurt to leave them in there?
It could potentially keep other applications from opening correctly, we suggest putting your APNs back. We just want to make sure our APN automation is working fine for the carriers we built them for.

Okay, downloading now and will report back.
Is this version upgrade for device only, or it has the updated version for PC and Mac also?
On my device, the version showing: 1.2 (downloaded from AppWorld, the version you are listed here is 1.1.0.3, Does the "1.2" on device actually mean "1.1.0.2" (as same as on my PC and Mac client)?
Thanks for clarification.
I know it can be a little confusing. This version is only for the BlackBerry. It hasn't officially been released so on places like AppWorld you will still see v. 1.1.0.2 which they report as 1.2.

I am having the same problem when I try to download it on my BB. It only shows 1.1.0.2 when I click the link.
Are you downloading from this link?

Yes. I get the download screen that says it is version 1.1.0.2.
Wierd, I just tried from my BlackBerry and I'm seeing 1.1.0.3. Maybe try clearing your BlackBerry browser cache.

No luck...I cleared the cache and get the same version.
Okay, connected no problem with this new version, but as I have communicated to Stephen, I'm having an issue with the desktop app.
We've been e-mailing back and forth for weeks about it.
Every time I try to connect, I will select my device from the list and immediately get an error message that Tether is not found on the device. In most instances, it connects the 2nd time around no problem, but there are times when it'll take up to a 1/2 dozen tries before it finally connects.
So, I think a little work needs to be done on the desktop version. :-)
I know you're running a 9700 now, right Patrick? That's what I use as well.
Odd, is your BlackBerry close to your computer when communicating over Bluetooth? Is it possible you have a faulty Bluetooth connection either on the phone or with your computer?
I haven't seen anyone else with a similar issue.

Yeah, the phone is like 4-6 inches away from the laptop.
I don't think there's an issue with BT connections on either end. I connect with BlackBerry Desktop Manager no problem. Stephen and I have been through all the BT settings/devices, etc.
All my other BT devices for the phone work no problem.
Stephen even sent me a new desktop version he'd been working on to no avail.
It's funny because my 9700 will show up first in the list of devices. When I select it, I get that error message. On subsequent attempts, the 9700 has to be the last device listed in order for the connection to actually take hold.
Ok, hopefully Stephen can help you resolve the issue.

Hope so, too. I know he was travelling and I recently e-mailed him, but haven't heard back.
Can anyone on AT&T verify this works without APN setings?

Yes, I removed the APN settings yesterday right after I downloaded the new version and it connected just fine.
Ok. Can you do another favor for me :)
When running Tether on your BlackBerry can you copy the log and paste it here? Much appreciated.

My pleasure. How do I do that?
On the phone after you pass all the validation click on the "BlackBerry Button" on your keyboard and a menu should pop-up. From there go to "View Log".

Yeah, I can get in there, but how do I copy and paste that information? BB Menu button doesn't work in there.
Humm... according to our engineers you'll have to re-type it out. We will have to fix that :)

Haha.....that's a lot of typing! :-)
I need Stephen's help to get this desktop issue fixed, too! :-)
I think a nice new feature would be an option to automatically connect to the blue-tooth device connected to the PC. Most of us I'm assuming usually only have one blue-tooth device connected at a time. It would just save us the step of selecting our phone (blue-device). At the very least, if there is only one blue-tooth device connected to that PC tether should recognize that and connect automatically. Just a thought.
I personally would rather connect via USB then Blue-Tooth... I would rather have a default setting the user can set instead of defaulting the user to blue-tooth and having to change it back to USB..
Popup works for me :-)
I haven't purchased Tether yet, have just been looking in to it. But, I downloaded it today and it works fine me with the default settings. Very nice. Going to test it out in some more remote areas... hoping I have a good data signal.
I'm on Sprint with a Blackberry Curve 8530.
Thank you for the report.
Today, all of a sudden, my Tether sessions are terminating on the device with uncaught exception errors. If it happens again, I'll see if I can get a screen shot of the event log.
Are you still seeing this issue today?
No, haven't seen it since that day.
Thanks for the update.
Wow! I downloaded the blackberry app and tried it out on my 8130 and it was OK. There was no way for me to know if the app for my Mac needed updating, so I did so anyway and wow (again), it lets me select the device I want to connect to instead of scrolling through a sequence of devices (more than once, often enough). I hated watching it try to connect to my bluetooth mouse until it finally moved on to something else. The connect time has been reduced to seconds now instead of a minute or so and this is wonderful. I use tether when my wireless internet connection goes down while I'm playing poker online and the speed thing is important LOL.
thanks!
Glen
Thank you for reporting your experience with the updated Tether software.
works fine and seems a little faster..
