I know we are early in this software's development cycle but a road map of some short term and future plans would be of great help for companies in their plans of deployment.

Linux/Ubuntu support would be a great step forward since so many laptops and netbooks run this OS.

Look forward to hearing more.

At the current time we have no plans for Linux support. However, that may change in the future.

yes tetherberry needs to work on Linux let’s face it the way windows is going they will be going the way of the dinosaur I have been working with computers for many decades and ever since they came out with me it has been going downhill so let’s get tetherberry on Linux this would be great I would pay double for the Linux program

I hope this helps us all

I am a Linux user myself and admire the way the Linux community expects programmers to cater to them at the drop of a hat. The fact is that even though you think Linux is free and hate Bill Gates you may not be in the same operating system standards of the decade. Linux as Free and anonymous as it is, is not an easy OS to keep up with. There are many different kernels to try to work with and lots of different distributions to try to keep working with. RPM's and .TAR files. Most of which people have no idea what to do with.

I don't want to start a fight but Linux is a developer OS. If you have time to mess around with stuff all day use Linux. If you want to fight with free software and try to make it work all day get Linux. Software like Open office and Gimp are awesome but they have support and development from the community. Private companies that put out software such at Tetherberry don't.

Linux has its purposes such as Windows Unix,Solaris, and BSD. If you think this is a good worthy program you may want to support the software developer in this case Tetherberry in finding true developers to help in the development of this Linux / Unix / BSD, software rather than just request it on a board.

OR people could just dual boot OS's in order to use tether. I would like to encourage development on a Linux interface.

I'm happy both Windows and Mac are supported. Adding a hit for Linux/Ubuntu support!

Can I recommend this as a starting point. I would love to see tethering be available, since all I run now is GNU/Linux.

http://www.berry4all.com/home

That will allow the verizon paid tethering to happen via a blackberry device. It would need changes to fit with tetherberry but I would assume it would be minimal.

As someone who's already bought a license, I also would love to see an Ubuntu version. Heck, I'd even pay for a new license if it meant being able to use Tether on Ubuntu 10... I'm hoping to someday soon be able to *only* use Ubuntu and ditch Windows once and for all, and this would be a big deciding factor for me.

How many more users do you need to vote for this until you put it on your roadmap? I'm sure by some quick cross-posting to some of the major Linux/Ubuntu forums you could gauge and even generate interest in this as a product, maybe even get some donors to get the development started. What can we users do to get the ball rolling?

I have to use Windows for my GPS and other functions but when the work day is over I would like to boot into ubuntu and use tether but the client doesn't exist. I'd pay for an extra use license as well.

Thanks
Chad

Thanks for your interest everyone. I'll pass this along to our team next time we have a meeting and see what the consensus is.

Hopefully this gets resolved, I'll be switching to an Android in Q4(have a BlackBerry now), I don't think I have to use Tether to get Internet access on the Android. However, if it was available I would...

Guess if they aren't interested though it's no no sweat off my back.

It's not that we aren't interested, it is just we have a lot going on right now with Tether for Android nearing release. We also have updated BlackBerry and PC Tether software in beta testing as well.

I tried, it doesn't work. Best bet is to switch the Android and tether for free :)

I need BIS. As far as I am concerned you can't link BIS to android phone.

really would like support for linux/Ubuntu.
While many have moved to Linux because it's free, some of us are on it because it's a great development platform. The only reason I use Windows is to test and for administrative (read Outlook with Clear Context addin). I would move away from windows altogether if Tether worked on Linux/Ubuntu. I suspect others in my situation are also willing to pay for it.

Throw my request for Linux in there, too! My wife and I have switched our laptop to it and would love to use Tether!

Downloaded the trial today - it looks a great tool. Was a shame to see it didn't work with Ubuntu straight away.

I'm going to try the program 'Barry' to see whether I can get it running:
http://www.blackberrycool.com/2009/01/07/how-to-tether-your-linux-notebo...

If it works, I'll buy Tether. If it doesn't, I won't.

Tethering is becoming more popular as the number of people with netbooks increases. Netbooks are ideal candidates for Linux (and the upcoming Google Chrome OS) so I would strongly urge the developers to make a Linux-friendly version of this. ((Hint: Make the code open-source. That way the Linux community will end up improving it for you for free.))

Tried Tether with XP VMware virtual machine. Would buy multiple copies if the client ran on linux. We run SLES, openSuSE, MeeGo, and others. If you make it run on Ubuntu or something else, we or someone will make run on the rest. If you publish the protocols used, we (the linux community) can help produce a linux client.

I gave up waiting for Linux Tether. Gave up on my Blackberry. Bought an AT&T Samsung Captivate Android. USB tethering with Linux or Windows (maybe Mac) with no client and no Android app. Just set the USB Settings to PC Internet and plug it in. Linux and Windows will recognize it as a new network connection.
