This is a deciding factor for me as to not bother with the app. My laptop runs ubuntu linux. So, without any linux support, or any way to tether my iPod touch the app is of no value to me.
Your argument that "there are too many platforms" does not hold good.
I have been using Linux for more than a decade and one thing I have seen with applications that work on all "Linux Distributions" (not platforms) is the use of GUI and System Call Libraries.
How does it matter if it is Ubuntu or Fedora?
There are 2 packaging methods RPM and Debian.
There are interface type GTK+ or QT
You can always choose the middle path which is TK or WxWidgets.
No matter which Linux Distro (not platform) you choose, system calls to USB device is going to be the same, except for the kernel version.
If you do not want to release your application in Open Source, do what Nortel or Apani does with their VPN Contivity software for Linux. They provide most of their modules pre-compiled, but leave certain modules to be compiled on each machine, thus avoiding package limitation.
I am not a programmer, but I am sure some solution can be created to work on all Linux Distributions.
I would be really happy if you created a version for Linux.
If you want me to research into system calls or types of interface for Linux, please feel free to email me. Thanks
To what degree does your software rely on the presence of Blackberry Desktop to enable your app? I assumed you didn't have a Linux option because you needed API support provided by the blackberry desktop.
If you went for an opensource release of the desktop portion you would probably find a number of people who would help port to the most popular linux flavors.
My vote for most popular end-user edition of Linux is Ubuntu (probably because this is the flavor I use).
You could just support the most popular distributions of Linux, ie Ubuntu, Fedora.
I personally use Ubuntu on my laptop as well as XP, I prefer Ubuntu because it boots quicker.
There is an app for the Palm Pre called my tether which functions similar to tetherberry since it uses the data plan for a data connection, i tested it on linux yesterday through USB with Linux and it auto downloaded a driver and setup the connection without a client software, could tetherberry work this way potentially?
I understand this may not be the case as the Pre runs on Linux and the Blackberry does not. but who knows.
Well just release the binaries and the Ubuntu version...or just binaries! I'm betting sales would soar if Tetherberry was an all platform solution!
Also, depending on how the Mac version is being/was developed, you may very well be able to port it to Linux very easily as a lot of Mac OSX is Unix based.
i do agree that linux support would be great. the only reason why i am not using linux on vacation is because there is not linux support. if you ever do want to support ubuntu please msg me because i would like to beta test. netbooks are getting to be a huge sale and linux is huge on them. people are breaking out of the windows world because there are better options.
At work, our outside salesman use Netbooks running on Ubuntu. Right now they are stuck to WiFi. We would definitely buy if there was an ubuntu version.
Has anyone tried running the windoz version with Wine?
Although I don't think I should have to pay full price for the added Linux functionality I would definitely buy this product for a second time if this feature was added. I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 Ult. and Ubuntu mainly because I don't have a Linux tethering option. Ubuntu is my OS of choice.
I'd love to beta a Linux app. Believe me, it can be done. Matter of fact if you want to focus on only one distro, use Linux, create a deb package and release it. The community will scale and support it out to other distros if you provide the source.
Having too many platforms is not the best excuse. Start with the majority of desktops (Ubuntu) and slowly adopt others as time/demand permits.
I work for a large software maker, and we make sure our apps are win/lin/mac compatible. Most of the time in lockstep, others a point release away, but always in planning, beta testing.
I also run varied versions of Linux here on my computers. I have Debian and Ubuntu on a couple different laptops. I'd love to get an app that works with Ubuntu.
I would like to try it in wine for ubuntu. But considering that wine is only a dll loader essentially I am sure that this is not going to work. But there is only one reason I still have XP on my netbook. Because tether dosent run ubuntu. I would love to help out. I am a coder for ubuntu and xp. Just shoot me an email if you need help (although I don't think that you do lol)
At this time we have no plans of building a Linux version.

Our issues at this time in regards to Linux, is there are too many platforms Ubuntu, Red Hat, Fedora, etc...
It would be interesting to see if one platform sticks out the most. Assuming Ubuntu would, since it's being distributed on so many NetBooks nowadays.

I too would appreciate Linux support. I use Fedora. It doesn't have to be fancy, no GUI even. I'm certain many of us could manage.

for your application if
you would port it to run

I'm definitely pressuring our engineers, we are trying to keep up with our promises of Bluetooth and some other major changes.
