I would like to know if we will be able to transfer our Blackberry Tether license to Android. My BB Storm is dead and bought a Motorola Milestone (Canadian DROID).

Thanks !

We haven't made an official decision on this yet, we will once we have launched.

I was really impressed with the simplicity of Tether and how quick and easy it is to set up a new machine. I used to tether before using the DUN method, so it was a welcomed change. I was really skeptical about the $49.95 price tag though. I don't use the software all that often, but when I use it I use it a lot.

That being said, I don't think I'd purchase another license if it was priced the same way. I'd be willing to pay a $15 license transfer fee or something like that though.

I'm sure they will have something competitive for us old Tether BlackBerry users moving on to other devices ;) ;), assuming your giving up the old BlackBerry license...otherwise you would need to repurchase the software or that would be like a buy one get one free deal.

I initially thought that $50 was a steep price, but after thinking about free upgrades and the continuous support (email) from Tether...the price seems a lot more fair to me now. I mean the Tether userbase is already over 100,000 and they have to support all these users for the life of the software, that cost them money every month whereas we only have to pay for Tether once.

I have been a happy Tether customer, using Tether with my Blackberry Storm 9530 connected with a MacBook Pro and a PC. I have not yet purchased an Android phone with Verizon, although I am tempted by the Droid X (un-released).

Would the Tether Android beta application work with this Android 2.1 smartphone and my PC? I know that the Apple version has not been released.

Can the Android Tether app co-exist on the PC with the Blackberry Tether App? If I cannot tether the Android, I will go back to the 9530.

I am really stalling since I am reading all the rumors about a Verizon iPhone 4 coming in the fall, 2010.

I am sure if I had the choice I would purchase the iphone. The iPhone 4 would be the best smartphone on the Verizon lineup.

I just moved over to the Droid. I shouldn't have to pay for another license. I bought Tethering software. I should be able to use it on the device I own if there is an application in that format.

Well technically we bought a BlackBerry app, that's sort of like saying you bought a Windows program and purchased a Mac six months later......now where's my Mac version of the Windows software and I want it free.

That is not usually how paid software works, I wouldn't complain if it were though :)

No its not but if you want to get technical, if you read most EULA agreements the license is for one computer but most people install it on multiple. Also it does not allow the user to install the software on a new computer when they upgrade. But who really reads that long list of agreements before installing software?

Why shouldn't pay extra for a new product? Do you think the programmers work for free? Do you work for free?

I also purchased this software for my BB and now own a droid. I think it would be a responsible thing to do, allowing your loyal customers to transfer their software to a new device.

I think some sort of crossgrade type of option will be fair. I do understand it takes time and money to develop another version but it always seems good business to keep customers happy (within reason of course)

I'd be happy to pay a discounted price for a license transfer. I'm happy that my money will go towards supporting a great program. I'd be a bit disappointed if us longtime BB users were asked to pay full price for the Android version, considering how ofter we see 50% off sales on Tether.

I think the 50% off price of $25 would be perfectly fair though. That's just 2 days of paying for airport or hotel wireless and worth every penny the first time I'd use it to log on to work!

You're getting free data usage from Verizon, verses other Verizon tethering plans so why wouldn't you pay extra for this privilege. I paid for the Blackberry version and would gladly pay for the Android version. You have to pay for intellectual property especially in an instance like this where it allows you to get free data service.

I agree with you cotterda. I think $25 would be fair since we routinely see Tether go on sale for 50% off.

However, it would be nice for the price to be less than that (maybe $10-$20) since I am one of the many that paid full price for Tether on my BB.

Also, the lifetime support argument really doesn't hold water in deciding the transferal price. One would simply forfeit any support for your BB when you transfer over to Android. Therefor, you still get the same thing, just on a different device.

Just my $0.02 anyway.

Tether for Android will be made available to our current Tether for BlackBerry customers at a discounted rate once the software is finalized.

Until that time please enjoy the free beta program and report your issues as they arise.

Major FAIL!!! When rooted Android devices offers FREE WIFI tethering and the carriers don't even see the traffic. No extra hubs, switches, routers, or servers to route the traffic to. Tether should do the right thing and offer a free upgrade.

Depending on the discount, I don't agree with the charge. I thought when the BB version was released it was stated if we change phones, you could change the license with no charge. I guess that doesn't include an OS change. :(

I thought the same thing. I was thrilled when I saw that they were beginning to support the android platform because I thought I'd be able to transfer my license when I made the move from my 9530.

Yeah, Im considering the Incredible as well, and I paid the full 49 bones for BB, had I paid the discounted price I would have no problem paying again for the other half. Dont think i want to throw another half a Franklin out though. Maybe I can hand my account to a BB friend? So, it wouldnt be a total loss if transfers arent an option.

Sorry you guys feel the way about our decision....

Our pricing on the Android version will be completely different then our BlackBerry version so that's a plus.

I believe Tether has failed to achieve an Android version due to complexities that were unforeseen. They would have released it already if they had it. One asks when you are running a business and you have a viable software that allows tethering to an Android phone, why not release it? There are millions of Android smartphones in the marketplace.

Tether hasn't even released a beta. The so called Beta version never gets sent when you request it.

I do believe that there are tough issues preventing the Android Tether software or there have been major setbacks.

We successfully launched our beta to over 20,000 users almost a month ago, and before that almost 4 months ago.

Unlike our competitors we spend time on creating a quality product. Our speeds are about 40% faster then any other 3rd party solution and we continue to let our beta be used for free while we fix any bugs.

I've been using Tether for awhile now. I also have been on a Blackberry for a long time. I am considering an Android, but need to tether. I'm waiting to see what Blackberry 6 has to offer but Android is looking pretty good. If it comes to having to pay for the app again, well then I would do it. Its worth the price and pays for itself. If you're hard up then wait. I'm sure it will go on sale! Crackberry has it advertised every other month or so. Of course it would be nice for a discount for current users. Don't be cheap!

This is the only app I have ever paid for BTW!

I dropped $40 odd bones on the software for a phone that promised free upgrades. PC's are a different beast than Phones. The underlying OS and hardware isn't swapped every year or two.

Now all of you who want to pay them the full price again.. by all means go for it... but there's nothing wrong with wanting to use something I've already purchased... especially on an OS that's already being supported. Switching my license to Android isn't going to cost them anything and is the right thing to do for your loyal customers.

Your software is great and very easy to use. I'm moving from my 9530 Storm to a Droid X. I'll consider paying a little extra to get an app to avoid going through the hassle of rooting my phone... I really expect that the discount you mentioned means that the savings are significant otherwise I'm taking my business elsewhere and telling my friends and families to do the same because your software isn't as future proof as I thought it was.

I believe a mis-communication has happened in general, we never stated changing to an entirely different platform would be at no cost. In fact we used to charge a fee to change BlackBerry devices, but due to the fact that our customers purchase new BlackBerry devices or lose there devices we felt it would be better to allow our customers to change BlackBerry devices at no extra cost. Somewhere along the way this was misconstrued into where we are currently, a lot of people feel the change from BlackBerry to Android should be at no cost. But we never planned on this to be the case, we have always planned on charging for changing to an entirely new platform.

We certainly will not be charging $49.95 to go from BlackBerry to Android, the fee will be less of course.

I personally apologize if I have ever mislead anyone into believing there BlackBerry purchase would lead to a Android license for free.

@alaskan57
Have you received your Droid X yet or do you know when they will begin issuing the devices?

Yep, I got mine in the mail yesterday. Surfing on it as we speak. They began selling them on the 15th of July.

Thanks for your response. I was indeed under the impression that since Tether was expanding into the Android platform a move to a new device, as long as you had a license, would be free just like it is moving from Blackberry to Blackberry.

Being that the expected use of a phone is no more than two years and all, I thought it was quite the bargain to pay $50 once for a piece of software that I could use for awhile.

I look forward to hearing your plans for transfers, thanks for addressing my post.

I've always had success with Tether on my BB9530, but if the license fee is more than $8-10 then I'll go elsewhere.

I'm a little iffy about the whole ordeal myself. I was only able to use Tether for my curve 8830 for about a month and a half or so before the poor thing died off on me.

I've got an HTC EVO now, and I'm hoping that due to the small timeframe I had the bb license I can transfer it over for free.

How can I get the beta version for my EVO. I like others had a blackberry and love the Tether ability on there but now that I have the EVO I want the same ability. I know there is other ways such as PDAnet but I've grown attached to the tether. Any links would be helpful. Thanks.

Happy customer

I'm not rich by any means, but if you look at things by comparing prices then we are getting a great deal for $49.95, basically $50. Tethering monthly through carriers like Verizon & AT&T costs $30 monthly; keyword monthly. We pay a one-time fee of $50. If there was not a Tether app, then all of us would be paying almost $400 annually to tether.

I'm probably going to buy my oldest daughter a Blackberry. I will make sure she has this app. Anyone who has this app has made their money back quadruple times at least. I've had this app for about a year, and love it when I am away from home.

Keep doing your thing, Tether programmers. Remember people, nothing in life is free.

Does tether.com do pricematching ?
Easy Tether is available for 9.99.
I would be willing to pay tether the same amount for a license transfer from blackberry to android. 19.99 seems a little steep.

Have we gotten an official answer regarding transferring a tether BB license to Android? I can't seem to find an official answer. I currently have a couple of BB licenses I would like to swing on over to Android devices.

I also use to use Tether with a blackberry storm and it worked well. I wasnt to transfer it to my Droid Incredible.

I tried downloading the software today to test it as I got an offer from tether.

I installed it and it never makes the USB connection on my Windows Vista Laptop.

What type of USB connection am I suppose to be selecting?
The Droid Incredible ADR6300 Android 2.2 USB connection types of: Charge Only, HTC Sync,Disk drive, mobile broadband connect. None of those seem to help. The default is Charge only.

This use to work fine on my Blackberry Storm but I do not use that anymore as I have the Droid Incredible ADR6300.

But this software does not seem to connect.

After switching from BlackBerry to Android, I was hopeful that Tether would be porting their software to Android. When I heard they were working on it, I was very excited to say the least. While hopeful they would allow us to transfer our license, I understand that Tether is running a business and the point of a business is to turn a profit. I thought a $10 license transfer fee was reasonable, but I'm still not sure if I'll pay $20. I guess one question I have is whether there is wifi hotspot capability with the android version. That would make it worth $20, in my opinion. Another question I have, since I still have a BlackBerry license that I'm not allowed to transfer over, can I sell or give away my BB license?

So after having my original Moto Droid from VZW for a year now, I have used both of the other 3rd party free versions in the market and have not missed tether on my droid other then the not being able to use port 443 (https://).

I just can't see spending the 19.95 for this product at this point.
