After clicking on both laptop and BlackBerry to connect via USB my laptop crashes and i get a blue screen with a crash report. I am running Vista on a Toshiba laptop. Just purchased Tether a couple of days ago and have not been able to use it because of this problem. Any suggestions? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program on the laptop.

Okay, it seems as though there is a problem related to the Tether Network Adapter installing on my laptop. I've tried turning off virus software etc. and still not working. Any suggestions?

Tried installing the new version that is currently being tested onto my laptop and got the following error message:
An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:DeleteFile failed; code 5.
Access is denied.

Anybody have any suggestions at all? I have never had this problem with any other programs i have installed on this laptop. Seems to be specific to Tether.

Though, all of this is turning out to a be a big waste of time. I am the only one replying to my post and Tether support tells me to do what I have already done. Thinking time to ask for a refund.

I've forwarded this along to our programmers to see if we can figure out what's going on.

Sorry for the long wait,

We haven't encountered the issue you are currently experiencing before, but if you're willing to help me I hope we can resolve this issue for you and future Tether users.

I'll need you to open your windows start menu, and at the bottom where it says "Search programs and files" please type in "event". "Event Viewer" or "View Event Logs" should appear on the list. Please click either one. On the left hand side of the window there is an item labeled "Windows Logs" expand that and then click on the "System" item. This will show you a list of different system events that have taken place. Scroll through the list to the date and time at which the crash occurred (You can induce another crash if needed) you will be looking for anything with the "Error Level" it will have a red icon on the list item. Once you've found the error or errors. Double click on it to open up the error details.

I'll need you to send me all the details of that error listed in the error details window. With this information I hope to find the cause of your crash.

you can e-mail me at tspeed@tether.com

Thanks,
-Tim

Having similar crashes with Vista64, BB storm 2 and qrkis.sys.

I've tried:

-reinstalled w/ a version sent by tether tech support (I assume a 64 bit version).

-Tried running as admin.

Still get BSOD referenceing qrkis.sys or sometime crash to black.

wkincheloe:

Can you please follow the steps I've posted above for brf1206, and e-mail me the info. I believe you may actually be receiving a bluescreen for a different reason since the bluescreen is reporting an error in qrkis.sys. The error log will provide me with some additional information to help me determine the source of the problem.

Thanks,
-Tim

Tim,

I initiated a crash again to take a closer look at my blue-screen report and it is also showing qrkis.sys on the blue-screen.

Thanks, Beth

Thanks Beth, this is appears to be an issue with the tether driver itself, I'll speak to our driver developer today to see what we can come up with. I'll get back to you with an update on our progress in the next 5 hours.

Thanks for your patience,
-Tim

Open the Windows Task manager, click the button located on the bottom that says "Show processes from all users" and Task Manager will restart with Admin priveledges. Now click the "Services" tab along the top of Task Manager, locate the "Tether" service and right click the word "Tether" then select "Stop Service". While your here make certain you have a single Tether service and not multiple, one perhaps called TetherBerry, if multiple exist let me know.

Go to the following link and download the "BlackBerry and USB Modem Drivers" from the first drop down menu option and install the RIM USB Drivers:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E...

Now run the Tether un-installation process from Add/Remove programs, reboot your PC, download Tether from the following link:
http://tether.com/t/setup.exe

Try Tether again and let us know if you still experience the BSOD issue.

There are multiple Tether services. TetherBerry is listed.

This time, I received an error when installing the Tether software: unable to pre-install driver

I downloaded the BB and USB Modem Drivers file but I am not able to install it. It says it is not a correct msi file (not the exact words but close). Now what?

1.) Login to your PC as the Administrator or login to an account with Administrative privileges.

2.) Click the Start menu and select run on Windows XP, on Windows Vista and 7 simply click Start then type run into the search and hit the Enter key.

3.) Type cmd into the run dialog and hit enter.

4.) In the prompt type the following four commands without quotes:

a.) "sc stop tetherberry" and hit enter.
b.) "sc delete tetherberry" and hit enter
c.) "sc stop tether" and hit enter.
d.) "sc delete tether" and hit enter.

Uninstall Tether through Add/Remove programs, reboot your PC (very important), install the setupdrv.exe from the following link:
http://tether.com/t/setupdrv.exe

If this does not work please try my previous instructions, it appears that the multiple Tether services is the issue and deleting the services then installing fresh should resolve your problem.

BTW, we tried it on a desktop XP machine and it worked fine so it's something specific about this laptop or vista64.

Followed all instructions above. Checked to make make sure Tether service wasn't running before reinstalling. Still got BSOD referencing qrkis.sys.

Also, it seems to hang when installing the Tether Network Adapter. It seems it may not be fully installing. Any thoughts on what could be interfering?

That one doesn't really install,

It's for after Tether has already been installed on your computer, you need to navigate to the Tether folder and place that inside, I left instructions in the e-mail, I hope they weren't to cryptic.

The tether folder should be located on your hard drive, within the Program Files (x86) folder. But if that folder doesn't exist, it will be in the Program Files folder.

Tim,

I followed instructions and got the following error message:
Tether.exe-unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because MSVCR100.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

That seems to be a compiler issue, Tim will need to update the compiled Tether.exe or you may download the missing MSVCR100.dll and place it in the same directory Tether.exe resides in.

This should be C:/Program Files/Tether/ or if your on 64bit Windows it will be C:/Program Files (x86)/Tether/

I downloaded and installed the missing file. Successfully started and connected Tether with my device. Got the same BSOD with qrkis.sys reference.

Sorry about that, I compiled it with a newer compiler and forgot to include the files.

Thanks, for pushing through anyways and giving me this issue.

This means that the issue happens when the application itself communicates with the driver. I hope we can start tackling this issue next week and provide you with a quick solution.

Thanks for your patience,

We looked over the event logs but were unable to find enough information to pinpoint the issue. There is something that can though.

If you are willing, will you please open your start menu, right-click on "Computer", select proerties, click Advanced System Settings on the left hand side. Click the Settings button within the "Startup and Recovery" box.

Under "System failure",
make sure "Write an event to the system log" is Checked.
Under "Write debugging information"
Make sure "Kernel memory dump" is selected from the drop down list, that the "Dump File:" box contains "%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP", and finally ensure that "Overwrite any existing file is checked.

Now you'll need to induce another Bluescreen by starting Tether, wait for the Memory dump to complete at the Bluescreen, and then restart your computer if "Automatically restart" was not checked.

Once your computer has restarted, go to your windows folder on your main drive "Computer -> Local Disk (C:) -> Windows"
In your Windows folder you should see MEMORY.DMP.

If this file is small enough please E-mail it to me at tspeed@tether.com, or e-mail me and we can arrange a different way for me to get the log.

Thanks again for your patience, and perseverance it means a lot to us,

Ok so here's how to fix the Tether BSOD issue...

I use Tether on both my work computer and my personal computer. My personal computer never gets the blue screen of death, but my work computer does. My work computer has many network security services constantly running so I assumed that it must be an interaction between the tether software and one of these services (when I say services, I don't mean the ones located in the Administrative Tools >> Services, I'm talkin' bout dem network services).

Excited already? Here comes your solution. Go to your "Network Connections" settings (which can be found within the Control Panel), right click on the "Tether Network Connection" and select "Properties." In the center of the window there is a box that lists all of the items that the connection uses. Assuming you're on the road using Tether (I don't know why you would use it otherwise), all you need is the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". The other items are for network file and printer sharing and such. Uncheck all of the boxes except for "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and you should be good to go.

The reason this is causing your issue is because the Tether network connection is not interacting with your other services. The reason only some individuals are getting this error is because people have different services installed on their computers. This is not really Tether's (the company) fault because there is no way they can test the software with every single network service out there. The two items my company installs on our machines that I believe caused my issue are the iPass Protocol and the Odyssey Network Driver.

BAM! Problem solved!

On a side note to Tether, I take cash, credit, and Paypal. Please make all checks payable to Dan the Man and mail them to the address listed on my account.

It worked!! No more crashing! Thanks! All this time and finally a solution! There were many services listed and I unchecked all but Internet Protocol. Ran Tether and no crashing.

Not able to get online through Tehter but in a location with poor reception. At least no crashing so now can work on the connection.

Thank you!

Tether, pay the Man!
