I use a BB 9630 V5 on Sprint with BB server and unlimited data plan. I've been using the Sprint phone as modem app via BT and it is working fine. I upgraded to Tether today.
I travel internationally often and the Sprint phone as modem feature does not work overseas. Will Tether work in that application?
Also will my Tether speeds be better than the Sprint here or abroad?
International Travel with Tether
I forgot to add when I travel I have Sprint turn on international data for $70/mo. They only charge you from turn on to turn off so a 2 week trip is about $35 for unlimited international data. With the Sprint DUN you can't use tethering but from what you say is should work OK now. Thanks.
Hello all... Hhzhao, I have to say that you are incorrect. When International data is activated, Sprints shut down PAM and it will not work overseas. I'll even go as far as to say when it's activated before leaving the USA (which is highly suggested, else you might rack up serious charges as soon as you land), PAM will even stop working domestically. If attempting to tether in this state, watch Signal portion of the BB screen... you will see the data arrows flash briefly, then signal changes abruptly from 1XEV to 1xev and a 633 error is generated.
Hope this helps ...Drew...
Not familiar with Sprint and specific areas that you are referring to. In your description, you might be in a country that has no BB data support on CDMA network. If your BB device does not support GSM (as most of place outside of US), you may not be able to using Tether at all as it do require the BIS/BES infrastructure.
With my BB Storm2 with Verizon, it switches to GSM while overseas for the most of time, and register the phone with BIS/BES no problem.
BTW, DUN service is completely different animal from Tether we are talking about here.
Nice description hhzhao, thank you.

As long as you have the blackberry international data service, meaning you are still getting your emails on BB device and can access internet oversea while you are roaming on other carriers, you will be able to using Tether oversea.
With that said, there are few cautions: unless you have unlimited international data plan, the costs of using any data service could be very high, you are potentially paying high roaming charge plus the data usage charges. Even when you are using unlocked phone with oversea carrier's SIM card, more of data plans I know from oversea carriers are often higher then those in the States.
I travel to Asia often, with Verizon, my company has signed unlimited international data plan for about $70/month. (It is an add-on to voice and domestic unlimited data plan).
