Using the HTC Incredible with usb debugging enabled, with Windows 7. I have been able to connect using the incredible and this laptop before but today I start tether on the laptop I then plug the incredible in and I start tether on the phone and I get a "unable to authenticate" error on the phone. Any ideas?
HTC Incredible - Authentication Error
Yes data is being received by all other apps on the phone. I am actually not having any issues surfing the net or anything. I just am not able to use Tether to connect to the internet. Not only am i getting an error that says not able to authenticate.
Today, I start Tether on the PC, it says to start Tether on the Phone, I connect the phone to the PC, the phone is in USB debugging, and it connects to the mobile broadband. I then start Tether on the phone and it just keeps saying Waiting for connection over USB, funny part it is connected to the pc, and the Tether app on the PC is registering bytes sent and received, but it is not connecting to the internet.... Any thoughts, this is frustrating?
Can you explain a little more what you mean by "it connects to the mobile broadband."?
When running Tether on your Android, can you check out the "View Log" and let us know if you see any errors?
I have Tether started on the PC.. When plugging in the phone, you have different options.. One of them is Mobile Broadband, the others are, Mount Disk Drive, Charge Only and HTC Sync.
When the phone is plugged in, it enables Mobile Broadband, and USB Debugging. I then tried surfing the internet on the phone to make sure i was able to getting data services, this is when i found out i was not actually getting data services on the phone, even thought the phone thought i was.
I then went to Menu / Settings / Wireless & Networks / From there I had to disable & enable Mobile Broadband & Mobile Network.
Once I did that, i was able to surf the internet on the phone and on the PC.
It seems the Tether software is forcing me to disable and enable my mobile broadband connectivity before it recognizes the wireless network on the phone.
Interesting,
Our Android version runs purely through the USB debugging mode, any additional features like mobile broadband would interfere because they set themselves up as network adapters, like tether does. Having multiple networks available confuses windows about which one to use.
The android phones we've been using for development are older and do not have this mobile broadband feature, we'll have to look into making Tether compatible in these situations.
I believe the Mobile Broadband feature you are talking about might be the built-in Tethering feature of the Android 2.2 Operating system, can you confirm that you have that version?
We have yet to test the differences between our Tethering solution and that of Android OS 2.2, we're working on this, and it is our plan to provide a better Tethering solution.
I am actually running Android 2.1.1 not 2.2
You do not need to select any of the options to use Tether. Launch Tether on your HTC, launch Tether on your PC selecting Android -> USB and you should see Tether connect.
You can simply close the dialog you see asking what you want to do.
If this does not work do you still show a Tether network adapter in network connections? Do you show an ADB interface when your HTC is plugged in over USB in the Windows Device Manager?
The HTC Incredible does not allow you to not choose one of those USB options. The question here is which one allows Tether to work?
You may need to put your device into Media Sync USB mode.
The option to do so may be available through the notifications pane which is accessible by dragging down the top bar on your Android, and then clicking something that says usb.
OR
It may be available in your settings Area under USB settings.
Check both.
Also you will need USB debugging enabled for Tether to work. You'll find the option under Settings -> Applications -> Development -> "USB Debugging"
It is enabled when the checkbox beside it is highlighted, although the visual may be different. Try clicking it a few times to get a feel for what looks like on and what looks like off. On some devices and skins it can be confusing for some users.
Also try installing our latest version of Tether on your PC, it will help you ensure that the drivers are correctly installed and configured for your device, if you get any warnings or errors let me know.
You'll find the setup here:
https://tether.com/a/setup.exe
Choose the charge only option.

This means it wasn't able to connect to our servers. The server hasn't experienced any recent downtime. Are other apps receiving data on your phone?
