Which carrier are you currently using?

Do you have a APN set on your BlackBerry?

If so what APN do you currently have set?

I have the same case. I am using Etisalat(UAE) SIM card. As per phone settings, there is no APN configured( Maybe using defaults!) . Please note I am browsing the internet normally using my data plan of the blackberry given by Etisalat!

You can check to see if you have an APN set on your BlackBerry by going to the following on the BlackBerry:

Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP/IP

Thanks for the reply!

by the way, it looks like you are referring to OS 5 not 6 since I am using OS 6 and the sequence is ( Options -> Device -> Advanced System Options ->TCP IP).

As I mentioned before noting is configured. Please check the link for the snapshot!

Thanks again!

I did the recommended settings of the APN but I am still getting the same results. No changes!

If that APN does not work you will require to contact your carrier for the correct APN.

Hi, I am with Vodafone Australia and have never had this problem until now. I have been using tether for 16 weeks and I did the upgrade the other day, now it won't work. For an App that cost nearly $60AU you would expect it to work.

Does anyone know the solution?

Also how do you stop tether from crashing?

Could you try uninstalling the Tether Application by following these steps from your BlackBerry Smartphone:

1) Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications

2) Highlight the Tether software

3) Press the BlackBerry Menu button

4) Select Delete

Once the Tether application has been uninstalled, could you install it again by opening this link through the default BlackBerry Browser:

I'm sorry to hear that didn't work. Based on a Google search could you try the following APN settings:

APN: http://www.indosat-m3.net/
Username: gprs
Password: im3

APN Authentication needs to be checked off as well. Give that one a try.

I'm curious about this: should the app work through RIM's BlackBerry APN (the same used by BB messenger), or through our carriers internet APN?

Because if it works through RIM's APN I do see the logic, but if it's our carrier's, won't we get charged for it? Was tether previously working through RIM's APN but it doesn't anymore?

It does work for me if I enter my carrier's APN settings in the TCP/IP menu, but I just don't want to use it without knowing if they'll charge me for it or not... could you please clear this up for me?

Thanks.

Hello,

There are some carriers that charge for using an APN, however if the APN is required for your data plan to allow for access to the internet on your PC using Tether it's something you'll definitely have to discuss with your wireless carrier.

Also, depending on your carrier and data plan RIM's APN could potentially work, but again, it's mostly dependent on your wireless carrier's settings for the data plan.

OK, I'm asking because I had the exact same problem that all these people are having ("Failed to find an available port"), and the only way to make it work was to fill in my carrier's APN settings in the TCP/IP menu.

So everyone is being told to do this, but then wouldn't we just be using the same data plan we have agreed with our carrier? Isn't this the same as using the tethering option that many handsets already offer? (all Android 2.2+ devices for example)

Hello,

A wireless carrier's tethering option involves a specific data plan for most carriers. With Tether, it's been designed to simply use your smart phone data plan as long as your data plan has browsing capabilities.

Hello,

Could I have you check your APN by doing the following:

For Blackberry OS 4.5 to 5.0: Please select Options -> Advanced Options -> TCP/IP (you may have to select Settings, then Options)
For Blackberry OS 6.0: From the main screen could I have you do a search for TCP/IP, and then select the option that appears

Could you please provide me what it says. With this information it will help me assist you in achieving a resolution.

Hi, I just tried to tether my BB 9900 with my laptop and I've got the same error on my BB: "Failed to find an available port. Please exit the application via the menu and try again". I'm with vodafone.ro and I cannot find any APN settings on my BB. What should I do? Thanks!
