I modded my (original) Motorola DROID phone with CyanogenMod 6.
I am able to get online for a few minutes, but I have to constantly restart Tether on both my phone and laptop (Macbook running OS X 10.6.6).
I tried updating both the mac and Android software to the latest versions, no dice.

Could you provide us with the exact wording for what Tether says on the PC?
When Tether is running on the Android could you press the Android menu button and select "View logs". Could you provide me with the logging information?
