I've recently setup the Android beta for Tether got it working for a few moments but then traffic stopped passing and I checked the logs. They are saying

could not create the TCP socket to: /*IPADDRESS* err: java.net.SocketException: The opperation Timed out

I do have an ip in the *IPADDRESS* section just don't want to be giving that out publically, and I don't think it's needed for trouble shooting. Tether is installed on a Droid X phone running android 2.1 My PC is Windows 7 32 bit running tether for android 1.1.07.

If you would like any further information just let me know. Thank you.

I've done some further testing. In general this will run anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes before the errors start up. Watching the logs I'll get this message a few times during a long session but it wont' always fail completely. When it does fail completely the message just keeps logging over and over again filling up the log. I've tried reloading the software on both the device and PC, double checked all my settings and have no seen a difference.

On your PC while holding the Windows key on the keyboard and press the 'R' key. This will open a Run dialog, in this dialog type without quotes 'services.msc' and hit Enter. This will open the Windows Services window, look in this list and tell us do you have a single TetherBerry service or multiple services with Tether in the name?

Do the errors happen while browsing the web or are you doing more intensive tasks like downloading large files or streaming video?

Just one service called tetherberry, it is running. I did try the new beta 1.4 version hoping it might solve some issues, but it looks blackberry focused right now and did not work at all for me. I stripped all the versions off, deleted the drives, services, and folders then reinstalled the android beta. This morning I've been stable for about an hour before the issues appeared again.

My surfing consists of 3 things. I'm using Gtalk, Tweetdeck, and Firefox to do some minor websites. During the outages I wouldn't say I'm doing anything beyond normal. Previously on this workstation with the blackberry version I was able to to youtube and all of that without issue. I've been babying the connection so far today to try and keep it active. The last few times it seems to error when I'm away. I'll be using it, move away from the computer to do some work, and then come back to find the link dead and these errors in the log.

Mainly just wanted to report the issue since I know this is a beta product. I appreciate any ideas you may have but I understand if there isn't an immediate fix. Thanks.

We do appreciate the feedback, very much so.

I don't have an immediate fix but it appears there is definitely an issue on the Droid X.

Have you updated your Android device yet, I noticed Verizon has began pushing out an update for your device today.

Hope that helps. I'll keep playing with things here see if I can get any more details or results. If have any other questions I can assist with let me know. Thanks.

Got a new one. This time tethering failed after about 4 minutes, light usage gtalk and tweetdeck only. New message though says

"Fatal Connection Error java.netSocketException The connection was reset. Restarting USB
waiting for connection over USB

Killed Tether on the PC and the Android, restarted the apps, says it's connected but can't pass traffic. Log says

Fatal Connection Error: Java.io.EOFException Retarting USB Thread.

Then it blew up lol screen full of

Restarting the USB Thread
Fatal Connection Error java.lang
IllegalThreadStateException Thread already started.

Unplugged everything, rebooted the phone and PC, was able to connect again after that for a time.

Thats what I was hoping, I believe it is a issue with the USB drivers you are running.

Have you installed anything on your PC that is Android related besides Tether?

Could you tell me what is the revision of the following files on your PC and do you only have one of each?

AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
adb.exe

The only other thing loaded on this is the motorola connection package. I loaded that because I needed to put some files on my droid from the PC and it won't detect as a drive without them. Maybe that's the issue, but I had a heck of a time even getting the device to detect without them, tether never even saw the device when it was plugged in. Maybe thats my issue though.

Either way the file revisions are
AdbWinApi.dll - 2.0.0.0
Date 4/16/2010

AdbWinUsbAPI.dll - 2.0.0.0
4/16/2010

ADB.exe
It doesn't show a File Version in the detail properties. Date Modified is 4/16/2010

Since I expect this will be your next suggestion I went through and removed everything. I pulled off tether entirely, removed the motorola driver I had on my system and started over with a clean slate. When I plugged my device in I get an unknown device. I pointed that device as the google ADB drivers v3 so now I have an "Android Composite ADB Interface" in my device manager without any errors. I installed Tether at this point and it completed without error. Started Tether on my workstation in Android mode and my Phone as well. Now everything just sits here saying "waiting for USB connection" like they can't see each other. I have a valid USB connection on my phone both the phone and device manager show correctly but Tether won't see the device.

I've been having similar problems on my G1. I have an open support ticket, but there has been no contact since July 1.

Did some more research, found out USB can be in four different modes on this phone. Either PC, Media Streaming, Mass Storage, or Charge Only. I've now tried all 4 settings with no success. I must still be doing something wrong with the drivers that prevents this from being detected, but I just can't seem to figure out what. If I put the motorola drivers back on I can get the phone to talk to Tether, but again I'm back at the java errors and random failures.

Sorry its taken so long to reply.

But I may have a solution.

First connect your phone

If you remove the drivers for your phone from you r computer by going to -> Control Panel -> Device Manager, and look for any drivers called ADB... Right Click on them and select uninstall. Make sure to check the checkbox to remove the files when prompted "Are you sure" from selecting uninstall.

Disconnect your phone.

ReConnect it and select the PC option, I believe this is the equivalent to the Portal and Tools option on the Milestone "The droids cousin". This should then install the correct ADB drivers on your computer for your phone and Tether will hopefully work.

If not our next release should hopefully be in the next couple weeks, and that should work better for you.
