Hi - I've been successfully using the USB connection method with Tether for over a year now and love the program. I've now been trying to configure a Bluetooth connection. My device (Blackberry Storm 1 - 9530) is paired OK with my laptop (I am able to connect and sync files using Blackberry Desktop manager for example) but I am not able to get Tether to work. I get the message in the subject line of this post. Any ideas? Thanks!
Bluetooth connection - Cannot find Tether Service on the Device
Yes Bluetooth is enabled on the handset. As I said, I am able to connect and sync using the Blackberry Desktop Manager software.
Not exactly sure how to determine which Bluetooth adapter I am running. I am still running WinXP SP3; can that be seen in the Device Manager (under Computer Management, System Tools)?
I am using a HP Pavilion and the Bluetooth is integrated. Device Manager says: 'HP Integrated Module with Bluetooth 2.0 Wireless Technology'.
Thanks.
I believe your adapter would be using the Widcomm Bluetooth stack and drivers, do you have the BlackBerry set to discoverable in the Bluetooth options of the device?
Are you receiving any error messages?
The Tether desktop software says:
"Waiting for Inquiry"
"Waiting for Inquiry to Complete"
"Checking for Tether on Bluetooth devices."
After about 10 seconds I get an error pop up saying: "Could not find the Tether Service on the Device."
Tether is running on the device (Bluetooth mode). Log on device says:
Connection via Bluetooth
First connection
Trying Carrier Specific APN - MCC: 302 MNC: 0
No Carrier Specific APN for MCC: 302 and MNC: 0
Trying Direct
Registration validation started
Successful(ip address)
Trying UDP
Tether is Registered
UDP connections successful
Waiting for Bluetooth Connection.
What is the Tether revision on your PC?
I am running v. 1.1.0.6 on my laptop, which I believe is the most current version.
Could you try the 1.4 beta and see if this resolves your issue, details are contained in the following link:
http://tether.com/v14
this is the same problem i am having!!!did u figure it out yet??my devise is paird but disconnects after a couple seconds 0 packets
sent...
Craig,
Your issue is a bit different as you've described it your device connects, but then drops the connection. In the above case the user was not able to connect at all.
Will the Asus Bluetooth BT21 work? That is what I purchased to use on my Mac G4 notebook (running 10.6). When I try to connect, tether tells me it cannot find the network device. Is my problem with the Bluetooth? If the Asus won't work, which one should I get?
I finally got it to work. I deleted tether on the Mac, had the bluetooth going on the Mac & Blackberry, reinstalled tether, and tried again. This time, when tether opened up and I chose bluetooth connection, it asked me to choose a device (hadn't done that before). It worked like a charm. I guess the trick was deleting and reinstalling AFTER establishing the bluetooth.
Interesting, Thanks for posting your solution!
I forgot to mention that I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. That may have helped, too.
Is there someway to have these posts pertaining to MAC o/s moved to another thread - I am getting new updates, ever hopeful that a solution to Bluetooth connection for my Blackberry Storm (9530) might have arrived only to find my original post has been 'hijacked' into a mac discussion.
So sorry - I received updates on this thread as well and simply responded. I had earlier posted my own difficulties with my Mac.
So that I am not accused of hijacking again....I have been unsuccessful in using Bluetooth and the PC tablet (Dell). Only the USB cable connection works for me on it; only the Bluetooth works with my Mac. The attempts I made to use Bluetooth through Blackberry Desktop Manager were unsuccessful, as were the attempts to simply connect on my own using Bluetooth.
At least the cord is a less expensive cost than upgrading the Mac and adding the Bluetooth.
I would contact Research In Motion to troubleshoot the Bluetooth issue with BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
I am having the same problem where Tether will not pair, even though other Bluetooth services pair properly.
I found a workaround. It's a bit of a pain but works for me. Not sure if this will work for anyone else... or if I just don't have something setup right, but this is what worked for me. Do it in this order:
-Open Tether on the BB and select the bluetooth connection option
-With Tether open, leave Tether running in the background and open "Manage Connections". Select "Set Up Bluetooth", then "Listen".
-Now open Tether on your computer. When you choose the bluetooth option you should see the box pop up with your phone in the list. Select it.
Now you should be connected. Your phone will probably still show that it's trying to pair. You can cancel the pairing and close it and switch back to tether if you want.
I recently downloaded the Trial (am interested in the full version) but would like to get the BT portion working first. I am having the same problem as all with a PC and he perverbial loop.
I can sync fine with BB Manager using BT but no go on the Tether. The USB feature works great.
I see a lot of the same but I am not really seeing any solutions.
It may work if you disable other bluetooth services associated with your blackberry in your bluetooth manager. You'll need to right click on your device in your bluetooth manager and select properties then open the services tab. You will need to uncheck everything that is not Tether. Experiment with leaving the default Research in Motion "Blackberry" services enabled or disabled.
This has worked for some users and is the only other solution we can offer, besides trying a different bluetooth adapter, like one that works natively with the Microsoft Bluetooth stack.
The problem seams to be on the laptop side. Tether app on my 9550 indicates that it is connected to PC via BT. Tether in BT Places indicates a connection but the Tether on the laptop just keeps looping and then all disconnects after a period of time.
I don't have a services tab when I go to Properties on my device only General and Authorizations.
do you know what brand of Bluetooth adapter you have, and what version of windows?
It's a Dell Wireless 355 Module with Bluetooth 2.0 + ERD Technology. Under diagnostics it says "Manufacturer - Broadcomm Corporation"
I'm sorry... Windows XP SP3
We have trouble with some broadcomm/widcomm adapters, you'd think they'd all communicate in the same way, but they don't. Even when the core components are from the same company.
You can see if an update will work:
http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php
But it may not, since it is a Dell derivative, they may have their own drivers, which are probably what you already have installed.
I didn't have any luck using Blackberry Desktop Manager.
On my G4 Mac laptop, I used the bluetooth dongle to connect (mine is older and doesn't have built-in bluetooth). I popped the dongle on the Mac, made sure it was working, opened tether on my Blackberry, chose Bluetooth, and then connected on my Mac.
On my Dell PC Tablet, I had to use my USB cable. I didn't connect using BB Desktop, just the USB. I opened up tether on the Blackberry, opened tether up on the Dell and chose USB.
I no longer want to recieve updates on my original post - as I feel the stream has been 'hijacked' by other issues / concerns and few of the posts concern the reason for me starting the thread.
Don,
In the notification e-mails you receive, there should be a link you can click to disable notifications.
All these issues are actually quite similar. And eventually we do hope to resolve them. That includes yours.
Don,
I don't believe that I am guilty of hijacking anything as my issues are exactly the same as yours... even the misspelled "ot".
Tim... how is it that... like Don, I can use BB Manager to transfer files over BT but Tether fails even though all indications are that the connection is successful?
What adapters are you successful with and do you have any plans of correction for the one that I have.
You are correct... the upgrade was not successful since it is a Dell.
I like the idea of being able to tether over BT, if I am stuck with a cable connection I can just use BB Manager which works fine.
For PC's I have personally used a Rocketfish USB Bluetooth Adapter, and and IO gear one.
Both can be found below
http://www.iogear.com/product/GBU321/
http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/products/mobile-phones-gps/RF-BCDM4.html
But any one that advertises use of the Microsoft Bluetooth stack in its specifications is most likely to work.
Cant get Bluetooth to connect either with Windows 7. File transfers...everything works fine, with the dongle. Even with Tether connected, Im showing all connections working fine...packets being sent and received, even data sent/received showing activity, just wont bring up a web page. USB fine. ??? Sent trouble ticket, nothing resolved.
May be a dns issue. How many times have you tried bluetooth? Does the issue occur consistently?
Everything is set up. Get Error message "Socket Error" (10108). Checking for WIDCOMM
Bluetooth only works with the Microsoft and WIDCOMM Bluetooth Stacks and when using the WIDCOMM stack the phone must have discoverable set to YES in the Bluetooth options.
Toshiba and Bluesoleil stacks do not have an API available. You may be able to convert these dongles to use the Microsoft stack, but this is not guaranteed.
discoverable was set to YES
Could you provide me with what Bluetooth stacks are installed on your PC by following the below link:
http://bluecove.sourceforge.net/bluecove-examples/bluetooth-stack.html

Do you know what type of Bluetooth adapter you are using? Our software only works on Microsoft and Broadcom adapters. Also can you make sure you have Bluetooth enabled on your BlackBerry. I always forget to do that ;)
