Here's one for all the testers as I can't seem to get any answers from the admin crowd.
1. I’m running “Windows Vista Home Premium” on a Fujitsu Lifebook “A” series laptop.

2. I have a BB 9530 Storm OS v5.0.0.328. I also am using BB Desktop Manager v5.0.1.

3. It is curious that on the main menu, options, connection options, USB or Bluetooth, the only connection option is USB. Under Bluetooth options all are grayed out. It seems I don’t have the option to connect to the BB DM via Bluetooth. This may be another issue unrelated to “Tether”.

4. I loaded the software for both the phone and laptop according to the email from tether and installed it according to MS KB04132.

5. The phone is discoverable and is trusted.

6. In the Bluetooth Manager on my laptop there is an icon for the phone and a dialup connection on COM 40 has been setup. Under B.T. Settings, options, security, view paired devices, the laptop is paired. Also, all B.T. services are selected.

7. On the phone under options, Bluetooth, paired devices, the laptop is shown as paired.

8. When I try to connect using the “Tether” icon from the taskbar, it asks me what type of connection I would like to use. I select Bluetooth from the dropdown menu and hit connect. Under “status” it says “checking for WIDCOMM” and “Starting inquiry”. This will continue forever and there is no connection.

9. If I try to connect using the dialup connection, I get “Error 692. There is a hardware failure in the modem on COM PORT 40”. I checked all the drivers and they report as working properly.

10. I can connect to the Internet via USB with no problems.

11. What the #@**$% is going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Start by troubleshooting your BT connection. In BB Desktop, the Bluetooth option is grayed out if no BT connection has been made successfully to the phone. You mention that in WIN Vista BT Radio Devices, that it shows paired, but on COM 40 (automatically assigned by Vista) that you receive an error on trying a dialup.
I would start by uninstalling the BT devices on phone and in Vista's BT Radio Devices. In Vista BT Radio Devices options, make your computer discoverable and set your phone to find your computer's BT. I have the same issue when using the computer to find the phone, it doesn't seen to find all available services and fails install of device drivers on install of phone device...
