Tether uses the Smartphone data plan to provide internet to your PC.

Tether has many AT&T customers with no issues.

To the AT&T it's like you are browsing the internet on your Smartphone.

Where does it show customers being detected using Tether?

I read about a few cases with mywi for the iphone. None about tethering with the blackberry tether app.

They said ATT was able to find out through data usage and if the sites visited were mobile versions or not .... this could be bs though.

There is no perfect answer to your question. Technically, any carrier can identify your specific usage by doing packet analysis just like any other network traffics. But in reality, it may not worth the efforts for the carrier to do that kind of packet analysis just for the reasoning to find "tether" users. Most carriers now days has implemented bandwidth throttling to limit download speed to control the network usage based on traffic types. You will notice the performance degrees as you are hitting more stream type of contents.

Any update re: the question posed on this thread?

Any ATT users get the dreaded warning re" upgrading to their tethering data plan?

I am in the military....about to leave for a month of training, and plan on using Tether to Skype wiht my kids.

Many thx!

Hello,

We have lots of AT&T customers using Tether with no working about a tethering package. Since it would be too time consuming, and monotonous to packet sniff every customer to determine data use it's something AT&T will only crack down on if you are really using a lot of data at one time. Otherwise, as long as you are using Tether it's as if you're browsing on your Blackberry device when you use Tether.

Why does Tether stop working, no internet, in the middle of emails and web searchs, not movie downloads or such. Happens often. ATT and Blackberry Bold. Once in while reboot helps, not always. Help!

Hello,

Could you please tell me what your computer is exactly saying the error is when you lose connection? Also, with Tether running on your Blackberry device can you press the Blackberry Menu button and select "View Log". Could you tell me what the full text of the Tether log is please? With that information I can assist you in achieving a resolution.

I have just bought a Torch 9810. I switched my Tether software over to the new phone from my old Bold 9000. Tether on the Bold 9000 and my laptop had been working perfectly with my ATT account. Now however, when I try to start Tether on my 9810, I am getting an error message saying a USB port could not be found - "failed to find an available port". Elsewhere on the Tether site, under Support, I found reference to this error message with a solution to enter a username/password for APN service - "This error means your APN settings are not set or wrong. Please visit the following website: http://tether.com/apn-settings". At the link there is a comment that "Some carriers charge extensive fees for APN usage". What have other users experienced with their ATT account? I am not going to just switch without knowing. I have a corporate account, and can't exactly go to user support with my question. Have ATT and other carriers done an end-run around Tether's solution? If so, Tether is useless to me now.

Hello,

You could always check with your wireless carrier to ensure having an APN is correct for your particular phone. If it is they will ensure you have the correct APN settings with you.

Hi,

Thanks for a great application. I was originally having an issue with dropped connection but it seems that was due to the iPhone going in to auto-lock mode. Since turning autolock feature off it seems to be keeping connection.

My question is regarding multi-tasking on the iPhone. I'm with AT&T and thought I understood that I would be able to use voice and data concurrently. That doesn't seem to be the case. In fact, if switch from the tether.com web page showing server and computer status to anything else I lose my connection. As soon as I return to the tether.com page connection is restored.

Is there anything I can do to enable multi-tasking on the iPhone?

Thanks,

Rick

Hello,

I'm very sorry, but that is the norm when it comes to iPhone multitasking. You can receive a phone call or a message while connected to Tether Web, however your initial connection will stop. When you return to the Safari browser, your connection will be restored.
