Apple Pulls iTether

Around 12PM EST, Apple called our head office to let us know they were going to go ahead and pull our app iTether from the App Store. They stated it was because the app itself burdens the carrier network, however they offered us no way to remedy the solution… We were very clear when listing the app what the primary function was and they even followed up with several questions and requested a video demo then they approved the application.

We strongly disagree that it burdens a carrier’s network, as from our own data history on more than 500,000 users we know the average user consumes less than 200 MBs of data per month on Tether. In comparison, one TV show streamed from Netflix, an approved Apple App, could easily be in the 300-400 MBs range. Sure, there are some users that will consume way more than the average however that’s the case with any of these types of products.

Our team is very disappointed in Apple’s decision; as we strongly believe we help carriers better monetize their data stream by pushing customers into new data tiers further increasing their bottom-line. It is very anti-competitive to not allow any Tethering application to enter into this space to innovate. Our team has created a lot of innovative solutions for the BlackBerry product, which we were hoping to port over to the iPhone like end-to-end encryption, compression, website filtering and port filtering.

According to Apple, users who purchase iTether before it was pulled will continue to be able to use the product.

Our team is evaluating all of our options… Stay tuned.

Apple is the worst

I can't understand how apple has so many fanboys. Good marketing + overpriced & outdated hardware + bandwagon mentality = apple. A move like this just shows they don't give a crap about their customers. I'm very happy to pay less and get more from Samsung.

chf eur

The CHF EUR is another popular currency pair for traders, especially
in Europe. The CHF EUR consists of 2 currencies which create a 'pair'.
In this case, the Euro is the 'base' currency, and Swiss Franc is the
counter' or 'quote' currency.CHF Eur
is actually a comparison of the value of one currency in relation to
the other.

CHF USD

The franc (sign: Fr. or SFr.; German: Franken, French and Romansh: franc, Italian: franco; code: CHF) is the currency and legal tender of Switzerland and Liechtenstein; it is also legal tender in the Italian exclave Campione d'Italia. The Swiss Franc versus the Dollar is commonly known as CHF USD Usual behaviour is if the Dollar gets stronger then the rate of CHF USD will go down against the Swiss Franc. On our pages you can find a 1 minute forex trading chart used for watching short term movements in rates, on the tabs above the forex chart you will find longer term views which show the previous movement around support and resistance in a forex trend.

Crash

The OSX clients keeps crashing. Version 1.1 does not fix anything!!!!

Why is there no response at all from the developer??

Also, it is scary to read that this person has access to our data usage (read the article above). I never gave permission for that.

Same crashes with Mac 1.1

Same crashes with Mac 1.1

Works like a charm

I bought the app last Monday (via App Store)for my 4S iPhone and didn't get a chance to download the laptop software until yesterday. My power went off so it gave me a great chance to test out the tether. Worked perfectly!!!
I've never used tethering before but I have the unlimited (grandfathered) AT&T plan.

When Are You Going To Get It Back Out ....

When will it come back out again ??????

Mac - iPhone CRASHING

I was 'lucky' enough to buy this app before iTunes pulled it. I can say I "think" it works! But once I launch the app on the desktop and iPhone, the desktop app crashes! Everytime. All the time! Something needs to be fixed. Mac OS X Lion user with iPhone 4S

It is really interesting to

It is really interesting to hear from the company's perspective when there are issues with big companies like Apple. I hope that it all gets worked out in the very near future so everyone can use it.

Is an update coming?

Please tell us an update is coming for the Mac app. I got it to work a few times but 99% of the time it crashes shortly after it connects to the iPhone. I notice there are packets and data sent during those few seconds, but none received.

iPhone

I have been a faithfull and frequent customer of Apple since the late 1980's. My first purchase was a Mac Plus...... BUT - this iPhone 4s has been the biggest piece of junk - EVER!

I missed getting your wonderful app by 10 minutes..... PLEASE let me know when it is available again!!!

Thank you

Continual crashes...

Please at least respond to the Mac iPhone issues... Are you planning on fixing the crash problem? I have tried numerous ways to install and booting in 64/32-bit modes. No luck. There isn't an iPhone forum either yet. I really want to love your app. Please fix it.

mac app crashes everytime

Under Lion the mac application crashes everytime after a connection was established.

After switching Lion from 64bit to 32bit kernel or using Snow leopard, the app crashes later (not from the start) but repeatedly again.

So the iphone app is useless!

@dev team: pls fix the mac app asap or refund!

App crashes during early afternoon time on 11/30/11

I did have about 5 min in between the app dropping during the morning hours, but the after noon the app crashed right after I got the tether up and running. I couldn't keep it running long enough to switch it to the tab I was trying to use.

Ok cool

Now, can you fix the Mac app from crashing so much for those of us who paid you for this app please? Thanks.

Bad Apple

Wait, let me get this straight... Your app was pulled because the "carriers" were complaining yet I can go to the Android marketplace and buy your app on the same "carrier" that the iPhone is on. Does that make any sense to you?

Wouldn't the "carriers" force Android to remove the tether app on Android's Marketplace? Looks like Apple pulled a dick move on you guys, doesn't surprise me either they like to be in control of everything. #FAIL

Frustration

I'm extremely frustrated beacuse I would have paid 30 bucks for this app! I am usually totally on top of all the tech blogs and unfortunately for me I was at school so I failed to buy the app when it was available. I really will pay to get it again but I really don't want to jailbreak my phone to do this, I'd rather have gotten it off the app store... legitimately... If there is any way for me to still get this app on my iPhone without jailbreaking, I would LOVE to do that.

MyWi

I use MyWi for the same thing and it works great. Plus you can tether your iPad via WiFi. Can tether do that?

Sync and gone?

If I sync to my Itunes, will the Itether be gone forever? I bought the app from App store. I'm afraid after syncing to my iphone and the Itether not there anymore.

Please advice.. (T_T)

sync and gone

Just synced my iPhone and the app remains and still works. Apple can't legally take the app from you since you bought it legally from their app store.

It's very nice to escape from under Apple's thumb

I was one of the lucky ones. I snuck out of the App store before the Gestapo could stop me.

God I am sick and tired of the arrogance of the thought police in Cupertino. I was hoping that apple might loosen up a little now that the Dear Leader is gone. I probably won't actually use this much as I am older now, and don't travel as much as used to, and I almost always have either wifi or my 3G iPad with me.

I consider it sort of a back up.

Now I have my grandfathered in unlimited data plan, and iThether, the iPhone is doing what it should do.
I would have liked to be able to tether to my iPad.

Way to go Carriers

its so sad I have to put up with the way the carriers monopolize the cell business. I pay 25 dollars a month for the right to use 2gbs of data. The way I use it whether on my phone or my laptop is no ones business but mine. The only reason they made Apple take it down is they don't get their monthly extortion fee from me for the privilege to let them grace me with the use of being allowed to tether. Same thing with the stupid texting fees. THank you for itether, I was one of the lucky ones I guess, and will use it till they figure a way to break it on me.

Iphone or not

I had to jailbreak my phone to tether with MyWi but was one of the happy ones which could buy Itether when it was still up. I can get my Iphone4 now back from semitethered jailbreak with a gevey sim.
In the South American country I’m living in they don’t like the customers tethering but they have a rule for that.
I have a 5 GB plan which is almost equivalent to unlimited, after using 1 GB at 3g x 2 gbs they push me down to 250kbps.

I can live with this, it only takes a little longer but while traveling I have my own network on the laptop to keep going on with my business emails and so on.

All this Carrier and tether lock politic of Apple makes me think of purchasing another brand next time, maybe a good china phone (why not when Iphone is made in china but designed in USA) with two Sims and Android. My wife already changed and will not go back to Iphone till she can official unlock for a good price.

It’s a shame that a phone with a price of a middle class laptop has so many restrictions.

Tethering in general

I changed my data plan with AT&T so I could tether. Up to 4GBs of data costs me about $10 per month more than if I had no tethering plan. I had to drop my unlimited data plan to go to the new tethering plan. All in all, I pay about $90 per month for the iPhone 4S. I tether at work and use the net for the things the kids I work with want to look at or download. 4GBs over a months time is almost acceptable, although I think this data amount should be included with the iPhone plan.

On a recent vacation trip to New Jersey I used about 4GBs in two weeks with limited net, podcasts, and news site access. I then had to pay a penalty of $10 per GB, which I knew about before hand, so it wasn't a surprise.

How much data do readers here think they should get with a cell phone? Should I be able to watch Netflix on my cell phone while waiting in line at the supermarket? What about game or app downloads that are 500 MB to 1.7GBs? Should I be able to download them on 3G with my cell phone?

My net connection at home is 10Mbs, so I use a wireless router and download everything to my iPad that way. My iPhone I usually just sync with the computer.

I would love to have an unlimited data connection to the net via my tethered iPhone, but I believe that would put too much of a strain on AT&Ts network at this time if many people did it. When bandwidth becomes much cheaper and more available most places, sort of like electricity is now, then things will change for the better. Or, at least, that's my story.

Wow!

Works on Android, just sayin......

Not the end of the world

@Allan Berkovitz

If the ability to tether is the only way you're able to continue to be productive in your business then why not just pay the charge to AT&T to allow tethering ?

This app was a nice hack for tethering, but given it's built in to the iPhone , and is actually available for free on most carriers anyway then it's hardly like we're lost much.

@ronjohnson

It's not always that cut and dry.

For one thing, the iPhone I have is a company phone on a company plan, and they refuse to add this feature to our plans. Bureaucratic company policies aside, in order for me to get my work done while travelling which I often do, Tether has always been quite the handy little superhero while waiting in an airport, or out in the field in places where wifi or any other internet access was just not available in hotels.

Why should this be an issue however, considering that on the same carrier, I was able to tether with Blackberry or Android phones without the hassle that we seem to receive for having an iPhone. Even though I may not use more than 1 GB per month of data, those rare moments I'm out in the field and need to remote into my desktop or one of my servers to pick a file up, Tether has been extremely helpful.

Waited a long time for this...

I've been waiting a very long time for this. Had Tether when it was TetherBerry for my Blackberry, then continued to use it up until I got an iPhone and now that I finally have it on my iPhone I learned that Apple decided to pull a scumbag move and pull it from the App Store.

It's a shame because this app is what allowed me to continue to be productive for my business while travelling, especially when there was no other method of connecting to the internet where I would travel to.

I'm surprised that Apple had the audacity to do this with such an established application that's been used by professionals for at least two plus years. And I agree wholeheartedly with the letter your team has put out in response, regarding typical data usage. This leads me to believe there is something more going on behind the scenes on Apple's side, especially considering that the same carriers have no problem with Blackberry or Android users using this app.

Keep at it, I'm sure eventually Apple will have to let go of control over the tethering debate for iPhone users, and let us finally be free to connect where we please.

Allan Berkovitz

Didn't know it was available.

and was waiting for a reasonable tethering product before giving up my BlackBerry for an iPhone. Guess I will have to wait longer.
