Any ETA for Android yet?
Fri, 02/12/2010 - 10:23
Would you happen to have an ETA for any kind of Android release, be it the official release or even more betas?
I'm going through Tether withdrawal since I switched from my Storm to the Droid, and I'm haven't gotten a beta email yet...Just wondering how much longer I will have to sit and languish :)
Thanks :)
We're just wrapping up some last things before we release the Android version. I hate giving dates because if something goes wrong in our testing we have to delay it further.

Still haven't received any eta on Android tether and never received the beta
What's the best estimate for Android?
I might be in the same boat as Daedalus. I'd like to switch to a Droid, but I don't want to lose the $60 I spent on Tether(berry). Can someone tell me whether free a license transfer from BlackBerry to Android platform will be honored for users that switch phones? Thanks!
We haven't decided yet!

I sure hope it does!!! I'm not sure I would make the change to the droid if not, at least not for a while because I would already be out 250 bucks on the phone and accessories.
i hope its free too. ive recommended this to so many people and if it isnt free i wont recommend it anymore.
If we gave it away for free, how are our developers suppose to get paid and pay for their living expenses?

Why would it be free, it isn't an update to the Blackberry software you purchased it is a whole new software package for Android.
If you bought MS Office for the Mac six months ago and then switched to a PC would you expect Microsoft to give you a free copy of the Windows version?
I can see both sides, but your email last year said a one-time fee. Do you really expect that large of a switch of solely BB users to Android VS the pure gains.
Consider the success of the word of mouth you gain from supporting customers like myself, who have used your service for over a year and have recommended more people to get your service than I can count.
Is it my fault BlackBerry's offerings are so lackluster that unless I had a computer to tether to, I never used my internet after the first "cool" factor wore off - My Droid on the other hand is sick fast, and I need that for my daily life. Using your Tether software is one of many available, especially since it can even be done without special software. I don't know Tether's finanicals, but I have a hard time believing the rate of churn from BlackBerry's to Androids is so high that Tether employee's living standards would suffer; especially since adding a new platform increases sales.
BlackBerry is holding their 43% market share well, Apple's is at 25%, and the 10-11% that Android currently has are resulting from a decline in MS and Palm. Especially since Android just surpassed Palm for the fourth place in the smartphone market.
Thanks for your feedback. I'm collecting some data to relay to our team, to make a final decision on the whole license being swappable or not.

any updates on this? ready to upgrade to a droid and would like to have an idea when i can tether again. i for one have no issues paying full price again for such a great service :D
FYI, you can wifi-tether your droid if your droid is rooted.
Just google around for it.
I prefer USB tethering however, so I am anxious for the final version of Tether for Android.
Currently, Tether drops the connection MANY times every day so I have to restart the software.
I also paid for the program on my BB and would appreciate the courtesy of a license transfer.
Also the comparison of switching from Windows to Mac is stupid. These are PHONES. People upgrade their phones almost yearly.
Expecting people to buy software every time they upgrade their phone is asinine.
These are phones that are running a specific OS, the software you purchased was for the BlackBerry OS so the comparison was accurate.
Tether for Android is for various devices, Android is the OS that it was developed for.
If there is a Windows Mobile version the same would apply.
Each new phone OS equals a whole new development process, the Tether code from the previous OS will not be portable to the current OS your developing for.

I think I understand that what I purchased for Blackberry could still be used on BB and really doesn't have anything to do with Android and you guys DO have to eat, especially where you are not charging us a monthly or annual fee for this. It would be wonderful if you could give us a break on the initial cost for Android if we can show that we have it licensed on another platform. Perhaps that would be easier to make fly?
I am new to the world of tether. I tried this for work related purposes and like it so much that now me and my boss use this to remote to our network. The president of the company got wind of this and now he is interested as well, however he has the droid.
I did fill out the request to be a beta user, but have not heard back. Are you still do the beta, if so can I sign up for it.
Thanks
I too have been waiting to hear of Tether's Droid Incredible offering. Have never received s reply to the Android beta.
Android 2.2 has built-in tethering and hotspot...I am with Verizon and wonder if they will allow this.

Any eta on the android version of tether?
I love it for my blackberry, but I currently have the bb storm 1 and it's past it's life cycle, and am ready to buy the Droid Incredible through Verizon, but the one thing that's holding me back is having Tether as it's awesome.
A free transfer would be great, but honestly I'd pay whatever the price as this is definitely worth the value.
Perhaps a happy medium as mentioned above of having a discounted rate to transfer license from one os to another would be great.
Any ways, just wanted to get an eta so I can better plan my android purchase.
Thanks guys, you ROCK!
Sean
I like what you have done with your Tether app for the Storm. I will be more than happy to pay for the Android version of Tether if it ever comes. I have seen Froyo, Android 2.2 which has a built in tether option. As a Verizon customer, I was looking at the switch from the Blackberry Storm to the Droid Incredible. Granted Verizon has yet to upgrade to Android 2.2 on this model, I will still be willing to purchase a Tether App for the Droid Incredible as I need to tether my notebook. When can we expect the release of the Android Tether?

Any previous owners of Tether for blackberry but have moved on to android please conact me via pm for some info.
I have EVO 4G (Sprint) and am evaluating it as possible replacement for my BlackBerry Bold 9700 (ATT).
I have Tether on BB & it is is fine, and I have signed up for Android beta but no ACK regarding it. Really would like to have access.
As for licensing costs, a promo would be a nice idea for existing BB users going to Android and would not be without precedent; you folks seem to always having some deep discount promo pr giving away 100's (1000's) of free copies via various promos/tie-ins.
Just my $0.02.

I received an email that the majority of the bugs have been identified and corrected in a new Android version of Tether. That's great. Now I need to decide on which Android smartphone to get from Verizon.
I currently use the Blackberry Storm 1, which I am used to for email, photos and texting, I hate the browsing experience. In general I think the HTC fit and finish is no way near that of the Blackberry.. This is why I am reluctant to commit to an Android phone from HTC right now. Other knocks to the HTC line is their use of the AMOLED screen which is poor in daylight, and not having "Froyo" Android 2.2, which I understand has made some improvements. Lastly I hear that HTC battery life is average to poor. This is a very important requirement for me. I have always liked Motorola products. Since I do not want a physical keyboard, I will pass on the Motorola Droid and the proposed Droid 2. I am hearing rumors of the Droid X. There are some YouTubes on the Droid X which show it to be thinner with a very large screen. I wonder if the larger form factor will allow them to utilize a larger battery. I understand that it will be out some time in late July or August 2010. I will watch out for the Droid X. Meanwhile I am extremely disappointed that the iPhone was not yet revealed for Verizon. I am very impressed with what Steve Jobs has done. The iPhone in my opinion may be announced on Verizon in the Fall, for the XMas buying season. I think however, first Verizon will get the iPad. I feel the Verizon iPad release is a more logical happening since, I do not believe AT&T has an exclusive on the iPad, just the iPhone.
So will I go Android? I will strongly consider the Droid X (Extreme) if it comes out. Otherwise, I will wait around with my Blackberry Storm, which is tolerable if not past its product style lifetime.
I am running Android 2.2 and it lacks some of the "basics" that I have taken for granted in the BlackBerry (currently 9700 Bold).
Battery llife sucks, 1/2 day is not uncommon, and that is with email polling every hour (BB is 15 min and is PUSH).
Contacts do not display contact AND company. Even Apple fixed this (finally) in their OS 4.0.
Emails go to their own account mailboxes and several "key" presses to move between. Using all ten available email buckets, this is a real PITA. Again, even Apple added a common in-box in addition to the discrete email boxes (also v 4.0).
I hope it does not take as many years for Google/Android to include these basics as it did for Apple to finally add them.
On the plus side: Tether for Android and (hopefully growing) 4G coverage that my Evo can actually connect to. Sprint 3G is sooooo slow.
HTH.
Thether's policies on the Android release are as clear as mud.
Many Verizon customers like myself are very annoyed that the iphone 4 was not released in CDMA yet so I am contemplating, as I believe other smartphone owners, past their Blackberry's product lifetime, are looking at plunging into Android. However, the fact that we do not yet know:
1. If Tether will release an official Android version, or
2. If they will "grandfather" current Blackberry users with no fee, or reduced fee.
We need clarity on these issues.
Frankly I think I will evaluate the Droid X when released but look to wait to be able to have software that Tether will eventually be releasing. I also will look at pdanet to see if that is an alternative option for tethering an Android or iPhone to Verizon.
I do not think I want to jump ship to AT&T.
Sooooo... What does it take to get on the Android beta. I filled out the form and haven't heard anything back as of yet.
I am getting very interested in the Droid X that was just announced today. Is there anybody who knows when Tether will release the Android version? The Droid X is coming out mid July.
I, too, am interested in the Tether for Android as I have recently switched from a Blackberry to an Android device. I completed the Beta Form a couple of weeks ago but have not yet received any response.
When did you guys sign up? The last release was about three weeks ago. We're trying to get a feel for the number of bugs before launching it.

I submitted my request a couple weeks ago.
I signed up a few weeks ago, as well, when the public beta was announced.
Ok, you guys will most likely have to wait until our next launch. Which will hopefully be soon.

Good morning all,
Like some others I have submitted a beta request a few weeks ago and again today just in case. I was going to get the Incredible and then heard about the X and decided to get on the pre-order thru Best Buy. So next week will be a good week.
I know thru VZW anyway, they will as usual charge for the hotspot feature but do not know how they will handle the tethering when 2.2 is released. I am sure there will be a cost.
As for licensing costs. it is always nice to get things for free or reduced costs, but fully understand that it is a new license for a new platform and would have no issue paying the fee for a good product. The app for BB has been great and based on VZW fees has more than saved me the license fee many times over.
I look forward to next week when I can give Droid a go and hopefully will have the beta info to also try Tether with it.
Thanks to the team for the continued efforts on this fine product.
