Android Tether for IPad
Fri, 02/05/2010 - 00:04
Just wanted to throw my two cents in. I have had tether on my blackberry and moved over to android. I LOVE the tether app and use it all the time while Im traveling. I am going to purchase the IPad 3G when it comes out and would rather use the IPad than my netbook while on the road and would love to be able to use my android phone to tether to the IPad. I have a mac pro in my office and dont like using a windows netbook on the road. I only use it for the internet so I dont want to buy a MacBook, But the IPad would be perfect. PLEASE make it happen... Id gladly pay top dollar!!! Thanks
Thanks for the suggestions...

I run Snow Leopard on my Dell Mini10v netbook and Tether works just great on it. I know it's not what you want to do (netbook vs the iPad) but I just wanted to let you know that there are out of the box solutions to having a Mac based netbook.
Not sure how you'd get the Tether app in into the iTunes App store, I doubt Apple would approve it... which is the main reason I will not be "purchasing" an iPad, is the closed eco-system that Apple uses. I like to tinker with my gadgets.
I agree with you re: closed ecosystem. It's really too bad. The alternative is to make the Android a wifi hotspot, then we dont need to be approved in Apple's store.

Yes, it would be great to have Tether turn your Android phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot (a la MiFi) so that we don't have to pay the $130 premium for the 3G models of the iPad. Patrick, how likely do you think you can make this happen before the release of the iPad 3G?
When is the release of the iPad 3G? Sorry, I haven't had much time to look into the details.

No problem, Patrick. It's "late April", according to the iPad's pre-order page:

Ok. I can't comment on our engineering teams behalf but we are hoping around that time to have something (for the Android anyways).

That would be wonderful, Patrick. The ability to tether--via Wi-Fi hotspot--the iPad to an Android phone on VZW would be the best scenario for me.
Does anyone have any info on tether and the IPAD AS 4/8/2010?

Nothing as of yet, sorry.

I also agree to the fact that ipad is one of the best technologies we could ever have. But wait, there are still something.. For one of the most part Apple items won't utilize the commonly used Adobe Flash Player. Why won't Apple do something that many of its consumers want? Well according to Apple adobe flash crashes OS systems too often to put into their items. Additionally they feel that the flash player has an excessive amount of possibilities to drain the batteries to their gadgets quiet easily; and will wear down their batteries life span. I can't determine if Apple is just attempting to prove a point and stand by their beliefs, or if they really want to give their customers the best products accessible. I will leave that for you to choose.
Make it happen for my Hero and I will pay...up to $20
