Android Tablet through Blackberry Internet Connection

Most of us have probably heard about the soon forthcoming tablet android devices (like the iPad). Some of these will be sold through mobile phone companies with internet to be purchased separately, however others are made specifically to tether to a smartphone device.

I would imagine that an android phone to android tablet may be easy, but I need to tether the android tablet to the BB internet by bluetooth. Does anyone know if this will be available? Will an adroid app run on the android and a brother BB app on the sharing device? Will an app like Tether work for that? Any plans for Tether to support such an idea?

Thank you all for your input.

Thank you for your prompt resoponse. Clearly, as these devices roll out in a big was in November (Archose) and through the holidays and first quarter of 2011 this could be a goldmine for Tether.

I know you get this a lot, but can you quantify "in the future" at all?

Thank you very much!

I was thinking about this. Once the tether software is running on the phone and has enabled it as the modem through bluetooth, does tether need a software app running on the second device (in this case the android)? Couldn't I just link the two by bluetooth and use the DUN? Is that how tether works?

You would need software on both the Android Smartphone and Android Tablet for it to work correctly.

so, if you have tether on your adnroid tablet, AND your bb, will they work together to use the BB to access online?

No.

The way Tether is built for the Android and BlackBerry it will not work.

I have a bb torch 9800 and a new HTC EVO 4G and I'm dreaming about tethering bb to my HTC EVO 4G. I know my Htc has a wifi hotspot function but the problem is that my data plan is on my bb and unfortunately I have a contract for 1 year more so, I won't pay two data plans.
I was thinking about using my bb torch internet for my htc evo. I see you have this app for both platforms but if I buy this app for both cellphones could I use the app for tethering bb to my HTC EVO 4G instead a Computer?

Thanks for your Answers MHANKINSON! I love having Tether on my BB Storm 2 9550 and my Laptop - use it all the time. Recently bought an Android Tablet and like everyone else, am trying to figure out a way to provide wireless to it without having to pay an arm and a leg for the Telco data package tax. I would love to be able to use Tether to connect my BB and my Tablet and use my BB data package like I do for my Laptop. I will be watching this developement with great interest - Please keep the development going on this project Tether!

Hello. The last indication of anything happening with an Android to BB Tether was back in October. Now that the Honeycomb tablets are on the street, what is the likelihood we will see a solution for using our tablets through our BB phones anytime soon?

Thanks!

Just waiting for the BB to Xoom tether option and I will buy your product. If it doesn't happen soon I might be forced to buy an android phone instead :(

There are a lot of people interested in this:

I use a BB and tether daily. I recently purchased a Xoom. Now it feels like I am missing my right hand because I can't connect. Please come out with Android tablet to BB. I am positive it will be a good move for Tether.

Hi, I use a BB Bold 9780 with a unlimited data plan and i recently bought a Acer A500 Tablet. I know alot of ppl mentioned it on this thread already but ill say it again, please come out with a tether for BB's and Android Tablets running Honeycomb very soon. There's alot of smart ppl out there that don't want to give away their hard earned money to Teleco companies just to run a tablet and tethering is the logical affordable step to doing so.

thanx.

I'll be subscribing to your mailing list, but wanted to add myself as yet another BlackBerry user (Torch 9800) wanting to tether my wi-fi-only Honeycomb 3.1 tablet (Asus Transformer) using something like your product. Please help us! Thanks.

I also would ABSOLUTELY LOVE the ability to tether my BB9700 to my ASUS Transformer... I'm not eligible for upgrade for another 14 months, so this would be HUGE for me. Please make this reality for me, and I'll buy your software for sure! (as well as spread the word on BB / Transformer forums!)

Thanks, and PLEASE roll this software out soon. Thanks!

+1 for BB to Android tablet.

I have BB Curve 9300 and Galaxy Tab 10.1. I want a Bluetooth tether from my phone to my tab. Work phone, unlimited data, need something to do with it. Will buy IMMEDIATELY. I will get everyone I know to do the same. Hell, I'll buy 3 of them.

RIM is coming up with a 6.0 OS version that will provide hotspot feature.
It's so far the only way I see to be able to use BB data plan for my Dell Streak 7 Android tablet.

Sorry man, but rim released 6.0 months ago with no hotspots feature..... that said, 6.1 was due soon with hotspots, but was recently renamed 7.0, and rim has confirmed they WILL NOT support legacy devices on os7.

Tether...... you are our only hope!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, current BlackBerries don't support the PAN BT profile to the best of my knowledge. That being the problem: BlackBerries don't support PAN or personal Wi-Fi hotspots (future OS7 devices will though), and Android tablets don't seem to support DUN.

I am going to ask the same thing just so it's clear... I have a Blackberry Torch and need one for work to hook to the BES, however I am looking at purchasing an Acer Iconia Tablet (running honeycomb) and need to be able to tether this through my BB Torch 9800. After a lot of research it's looking like Tether.com may be the only hope here.

Thanks,
Rob

I have a WiFi Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and would love to use it tethered to my BlackBerry 9930 via Bluetooth while I travel. It sounds like there is a market opportunity that is being missed here. Eventually someone will beat you to the punch.

I'm interested about using tether to access internet with my WiFi Xoom while on the go (with my BB Curve 8520). Is there any estimated day for the release of the Android table to BB tether?

Ok, I have created an account in your forms just to put in my vote for this feature.
Can you just come out and say if it is possible for Tether to accomplish this app? If you guys can, there would be some definite money to be made. Are there legal reasons this cannot be done?
It would also be interesting to know how many hits this topic gets in your forums.

Well this is amazing and frustraiting at the same time...
I am following your forum almost for one year! you said that you are working on a tethering solution blackbery to android tablet but still nothing! One year and nothing?! are you kidding me?? do you have any idea what is the potential of such solution? Do you have any idea how many customers you could have for such a solution?? just search in google and you will see how many people are looking for this solution...
So please, if you can make it please be profitional and give some schedules, if you can not deliver this solution say so and close this forum

Ditto. At this rate, we'll be turning to a new provider before Tether gets it together. Give us a target date or tell us you can't do it.

I have to agree with all the disappointments regarding the unfulfilled requests to Tether regarding new OS's.. Android, Web OS, etc. With the huge number of WiFi tablets out in the wild, the obvious solution would be to have software to turn a particular phone into a WIFI hot spot. Sure, up until recently, everyone wanted a connection to their laptops, and while that may still be a need, Tablets are definitely the direction companies like Tether should be going. All a person has to do is walk around an airport and see how many people are using tablets. They are keeping their laptops in their case and using tablets because they are easier, have longer battery life, etc etc etc.

The idea of having a two part solution seems to me a little dated. Install part#A on your phone, install part#B on your laptop (depending on flavor). Then have part A talk to Part B, and finally you are connected with Tether.

Tether should be 'simply' software that turns your phone into a WIFI hotspot. You guys are in jeopardy of losing your business model. The newer blackberries are coming out with the ability to create a WIFI hotspot. Apple already has it, and when that becomes the norm, that customer base will be gone. Your technology is quickly becoming redundant, and unnecessary. If anything, you should be thankful for the providers that dont allow tethering, or charge through the nose for it.

I have been looking for the ability to use my Blackberry Torch9800 as my internet source for my HP Touchpad. And we know that you will probably never support that "dead" OS. So, what are my options? What are other peoples options? We just want to connect our tablets, any wifi only tablets, to the web when we are out and about.
Keep it simple guys. Make it easy for anyone to use Tether. You have an opportunity here, but that window is soon to close, unless you are able to rethink your product
