Acquiring Network Address

I've been using tether off and on since March. Simple to install and operate and find it is an essential tool for internet access on the run. Twice when my home dsl went out I used tether to go online to successfully troubleshoot the problem. And on travel I've gone places and tether allows for faster broadband speeds than the motel according to speakeasy speedtest.

Now I have a problem. I'm on a seven day business road trip and I don't know if the destinations will have wifi or not so I really rely on tether. Last night after disconnecting the phone from the Usb cable to make a call outside, when I returned to reconnect it, it doesn't work. AT&T bold 9000 phone says tether is running. XP windows laptop says acquiring network address. I went through my old emails and found the registration code and re-entered that and nothing changes. I did a hard reboot of the blackberry and nothing happens. The license says registered.

Oh by the way, I got a random email two days ago telling me that my trial period has expired which I ignored since I bought this one. Is it possible that somehow it thinks this is the trial version?

The problem is on your PC, not Blackberry device. Most likely, when you decided to make the call, you just simply unplugged phone from PC, and your tether client on PC was not properly terminated, depends on what's running and how your PC's specific configuration, that could cause the Window TCP/IP stack to hung.....

The quick fix is re-start your PC. For the future, always click "Exit" on Tether application before you disconnect the phone from USB if your Tether is running.

Tried rebooting twice. That doesn't work.

To eliminate other possible facts, you could try reset the phone once if you have not done that by pulling the battery.

If you have BB Desktop Manager installed on the PC., you can also to verify the USB communication between your BB and PC is function proper.

Without knowing exactly your PC's resources information, those are general steps to ensure the problems are not from BB itself and/or connectivity between them.

If those are all working, it will isolate the issues are within PC. You can always re-install the Tether client on PC to try.

Does it matter that in order to stay online to catch the forum responses I've had to use wifi connection manager? I understand that the two don't operate simultaneously. For a brief period yesterday I may have accidently attempted to run both. But after rebooting twice I made sure to disable the wifi and tried using just the tether. And all I get is acquiring network address. Everything else looks like it normally does. It says connected but data packets stay at zero.

Tether and Wi-Fi can not be active at same time. Make sure Wi-Fi is disabled while using the tether. Have you also check the Tether log on your BB if it indicated anything in specific. To access the log, just click BB Menu key while on Tether screen, select Log from the menu list.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I realize that they cannot run at the same time. I said that I had done so inadvertently. I asked if having done it once created this problem. I've looked at the tether log and it doesn't indicate anything unusual. I tried shutting the computer down, turning off the phone several times and nothing works. Is it possible that the email I received saying that my trial has expired (even though I bought and registered tether months ago) is causing the problem?

No, if your phone says it's registered then our database has you marked as registered.

What does the View Log say on your BlackBerry when running Tether?

Looks like it's connecting fine. Are you seeing any packets being sent or received on the phone and the computer?

I wonder if your Tether Network Adapter maybe disabled?

On your BlackBerry I need you to go into the Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications -> highlight Tether in this list and hit the BlackBerry key then select "Delete". Remove the battery from your BlackBerry for one minute then place battery back into device and let boot. When the phone gets finished rebooting I need you to go to the following address in the BlackBerry web browser:

http://tether.com/t/tether.jad

On your PC I need you to uninstall Tether, reboot the PC, and download the Tether desktop PC software from the following link:

http://tether.com/t/setupdrv.exe

Afterwards could you open the Windows Task Manager and click on the services tab, ensure you have only one service named Tether.
