New Version - 1.1.0.6 - New BlackBerry & PC Software
Hello Everybody,
Recently, we released a non-official version for the BlackBerry as 1.1.0.5, the feedback was great but we did find some bugs that held us back from officially launching it.
So, we've been busy fixing the bugs and making it more stable. This version has some more bug fixes then the original 1.1.0.5 and we are launching it side-by-side with a new PC software.
This new PC Software fixes an important flaw and I'd like to go into some detail about this flaw. As you may know in December 2009, we launched a version that included Bluetooth. For our product to work with a Broadcom Bluetooth Device we had to compile our software differently.
Apparently this way of compiling was dramatically slowing down the speeds on our software, but went undetected because of the randomness of speeds you see on the cell networks. This flaw didn't affect our Mac users.
This new PC Software is compiled in an optimized way and from our testing brought our average speeds from 1.37 mbps to 1.90 mbps on a 3G connection on a 9700 Bold. That is quite a significant increase in speeds, that required no additional coding from our end. It took us a long time to figure out what was causing this issue, but we eventually did!
Now, not everyone will experience an increase in speeds especially if you are on Edge or Evdo, but we are hoping in general this new version will speed up your Tether just like it did to ours.
BlackBerry Application:
http://tether.com/t/tether.jad
PC Application:
http://tether.com/t/setupdrv.exe (includes desktop manager)
http://tether.com/t/setup.exe (doesn't include desktop manager)
BlackBerry Changes for 1.1.0.6 are:
- Includes a Bluetooth Reconnect feature for Microsoft Stack. Still working on Widcom to re-establish lost connections.
- Bluetooth speeds should be faster.
- Fixed the submit button on certain BlackBerry phones
- Fixed a crash for taking over registration codes.
- Improved error logging even further.
BlackBerry Changes for 1.1.0.5 are:
- Improved UI (fixes for Storm Users)
- Packet Counter
- Faster Bluetooth on older devices (potentially)
- No waiting for Registration Checks
- Improved error logging
- Increased number of default supported Carrier APNs
- Improved connectivity, misc bug fixes...
Please try the newest version and post your feedback here!
Patrick, which PC version do we download if we've already had the product? What is Desktop Manager?
Desktop mamager is for your bb. Did u insert ur cd into ur comp when u first got ur bb? That will install ur desktop manager which helps u sinc ur bb to ur comp to transfer files, etc...
No, I don't think it's the BB Desktop Manager. It's the Tether Desktop Manager.
I uninstalled the old version and reinstalled the old version.
Same issue as I described in another post, though Patrick, where I get the error that Tether was not found on the device. Happens EVERY time on the first try.
Frustrating.
The desktop manager I was referring to is for the BlackBerry Desktop Manager USB Drivers.
What post are you specifically referring to? Are you connecting to Bluetooth or USB? Do you have Tether running on your BlackBerry? Also, if you are using Bluetooth double-check you have Bluetooth enabled. That error is commonly users not having Bluetooth enabled on their device.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.
I was referring to this post:

Bluetooth is definitely enabled on the device. I ALWAYS get the error the first time attempting to connect through the PC version.
I've only attempted to connect twice with this new version and each time I get the error message the first time through, but connect successfully the second time.
On the previous versions, there were occasions where it would take 7-8 attempts before I would finally connect without the error. The pattern is that my device has to be the last one in the list of devices that comes up.
Why do we even need this list of device? Can't the process just find the closest device with Tether installed and connect immediately?
Humm... When you run Tether and select Bluetooth and the list of devices appears, how many devices show up on that list? Can you take a screenshot?
There is no functionality that we can hook into to guess the proximity of the device and it wouldn't be very applicable...
Potentially we could build a scan function that loops through all of the devices to see if Tether is enabled, but we had this functionality before and customers said they would rather have the list.

Okay, third time connecting, same thing. Error on the first try, successful connection the second attempt.
I will e-mail you the screenshots and copy Stephen on it.
I e-mailed some screenshots to Stephen a few weeks ago where it took me several attempts to connect. I'll send that along as well as it will show you how varied the list looks at each attempt.
E-mail on the way.....
Desktop manager here is referring to BlackBerry device driver files.
Tried new version for both USB and Bluetooth with XP and Win7 (32bit) environment. Everything works as expected.
Thanks for the new version and enhancement.
Thanks for the update, glad to hear :)

phankinson- No response yet....here is the info again:
I spoke to you before about the speed, and you said it was most likely because I am on the EDGE Network. So before I updated this version I was getting and recieving packets just fine just hated the slowness. Now when I start it there are no packets on phone or laptop. The log says this: connecting via usb
first connection
trying carrier specific APN-MCC:
310 MNC:410
Registration validation started
Tether is registered
Successful (64.150.184.38)
Trying UDP
UDP connection successful
Checking for USB connection
USB cable is connected to Blackberry
This is all it says, but still no packets being sent or recieved even as I wrote this....
Been working on it myself....I went ahead since I'm at my dads and have wireless connection just uninstalled the updated version from my bb, and laptop and reinstalled the 1.1.0.4 version, but i'm getting the same results... still no packets are being sent or recieved. Can you please help me with this asap as I will be going back home tomorrow, and tether is my means to the internet at home.
Thanks

I have yet to purchase tether due to experiencing slow speeds both through USB and Bluetooth. I assumed it was due to Sprint's EVDO network, however the release notes state speed improvements. I am curious if there is any way to test an updated version prior to purchasing to see if it improves speeds.
I was told that unless you are using a 3G Network tether will be slow. I have a bb curve 8310 and my provider is AT&T, but since I don't have the best of the best phone, my connection is EDGE, so my tether connection is kinda slow, but my only issue really is that if I want to download something it takes hours instead of mins. The speed improvements are for the 3G network because they also stated that if we were on a network like EDGE there most likely won't be an improvement, which to me makes no sense, You would think it WOULD help the SLOWER connections, and not the "3G" connections where they have fast connection speeds anyway........
Slow in comparison to 3G but not slow necessarily.
what's ur point???? I stated kinda slow but the main problem is downloading speed. it takes an hour or longer to dwnld a song, or even a 3 min video....where as when i'm connected through wireless it only takes a few mins or even seconds sometimes. I use tether so my opinion is valid, thank you!
Our release notes said that if you are on a slower connection that isn't 3G that speeds would increase it just wouldn't be noticeable.
For example if you on 3G and you're speeds are usually 1.5 mbps, a 40% increase would result in a speed gain of 0.6 mbps for a total of 2.1 mbps. Which is very noticeable to the end user.
If you're on a Edge connection and you're getting 0.21 mbps, a 40% increase would result in a 0.29 mbps. This is why it would be barely noticeable.
This release isn't going to double your speeds on a slower cell network connection, or anything like that.

Sorry, I was just going by what you said in the original post which said "Now, not everyone will experience an increase in speeds especially if you are on Edge or Evdo, but we are hoping in general this new version will speed up your Tether just like it did to ours"
If you send us your PIN I can update your trial for an additional 7 days.

PC application links not working. And the download links accessed through my account are still 1.1.0.2 (although you can't tell until you download and try to install -- would be much preferred to include the version number in the link/filename).
The links should be working now, we were just pushing this version live.

Thanks. Links worked and I was able to download new version. So far, everything looks great!
One thing I've noticed with these new versions is that if I shut Tether down on the PC, it remains running on the device.
Used to be that it also shut down on the device when shut down on the PC.
hello ,i just updated the tether on the bb 8330 ,as i was signing in to try and get on the net,and it updated fine then asked for my email to subscribe to the newsletter, after i did so it wasn't working, reconnected it to the laptop and opened it again and it worked but its saying its a trial version,do i have to update it on my laptop ? i saw when i opened this site and logged in that it brought me to the download page. im not really good with the computer stuff so i was just trying to figure out if i needed to download something on my laptop to ensure continuing tether usage
I updated my tether software yesterday and now it's stuck at the "Receive Tether Instructions"....It want let me scroll down to click submit or anything...
BlackBerry Storm 2 9550
Verizon
5.0.0.607
Ev erything was working great until I updated. Now its connects for a bit, and the stops working. Check my phone and it says fatalerror in some page. Please help as this is how I send daily emials to my boss.
You might want to try uninstalling both the device and PC applications and then reinstall them.
Tried that just now,, Again.. Its works for a little while and then i get this error on my blackberry.
Uncaught Excetion:
Applaction Tether (148) is not responding:
Process Termainated.
Started happing after update. Been working fine for months now.
Please help
I can provide you with links to the older software if you believe the update has caused the issue your experiencing, note that you will be asked to update on your BlackBerry each time you launch Tether...select No.
Could you uninstall Tether by following these steps from your BlackBerry Smartphone:
1) Click Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications
2) Highlight Tether in the list of applications
3) Press the BlackBerry Menu button
4) Select Delete
5) Remove battery from your BlackBerry for one minute, replace battery and let device boot
Once the Tether application has been uninstalled and your device has rebooted, install Tether again by visiting one of the following backup links through the default BlackBerry Browser:
Tether for BlackBerry (version 1.1.0.4) = http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.4/tether.jad
Tether for BlackBerry (version 1.1.0.2) = http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.2/tether.jad
Mine does that as well. Doesn't happen all the time, but has happened a few times since I updated. Might be a glich yall need to fix.
Just a quick update on 1.1.0.6 experience. Spend 7 days in Las Vegas for conference, and used Tether 1.1.0.6 one BlackBerry and for Windows XP professional everyday for couple of hours (multiple times a day). Works well and stable. no issues so far.
For this time around, I am primary used with USB connection for the following reasons: to be able to gain most of speed throughput; and keep the phone charged while on line.
Does anyone know how to Re-Install Tether on laptops? I kept getting this "Cannot connect to network adapter" So I Un-Installed it to see if that would work...but now, I don't know how to reinstall...please anyone, thanks strengthhonor2010@gmail.com
Just download the "setupdrv.exe" from tether.com, and run the program again.
You may have to go into your network connections and delete the Tether network adapters. Then try re-installing.

How do I install the .jad file? When I click on the link my choices are "find" or "save". I've saved it to my hard drive. When I run the Desktop Manager to add the app to my device it doesn't recognize it because it's not an alx file. I tried double clicking the .jad file and it doesn't have software to open it.
I know this is a simple answer, but can't figure out how to install Tether on my BB.
Thanks!!
SandraD922
You need to run the Jad file from your BlackBerry. Basically go to your BlackBerry browser and type in the URL.
