Hi Guys,

We are testing a new BlackBerry client. It is available at:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.5/Tether.jad

Changes are:

  • Improved UI (fixes for Storm Users)
  • Packet Counter
  • Faster Bluetooth on older devices (potentially)
  • No waiting for Registration Checks
  • Improved error logging
  • Increased number of default supported Carrier APNs
  • Improved connectivity, misc bug fixes...

Please try the newest version and post your feedback here!

I just verified the link is good, you need to visit the link from the default BlackBerry web-browser to install, it is not for the PC.

To make sure the previous Tether is uninstalled beforehand you can follow these instructions from your BlackBerry. This is not usually necessary but if you have problems or receive an error on your BlackBerry or PC you can do the following:

1) Click Options -> Advanced Options -> Applications

2) Highlight the Tether in the list of applications

3) Press the BlackBerry Menu button

4) Select Delete

5) Remove battery from your BlackBerry for one minute, replace battery and let device boot

Once the Tether has been uninstalled and your device has rebooted, install Tether again by visiting the following link through the default BlackBerry Browser:
http://tether.com/t/backups/1.1.0.5/Tether.jad

Post any issues or problems you have/had along with what BlackBerry your using, who is your BlackBerry provider, and what is the specific error message you see either on your PC or BlackBerry. We appreciate you taking time to test the new Tether and look forward to any feedback you may have.

Just wanted to see if anyone is currently using 1.1.0.5 and how it's working for them?

I am using it.

Comments:
- I appreciate the enhanced blackberry UI
- The new UI allows me to go from startup to connection much faster
- I am still getting the "hang-ups" issue where packets just stop transferring for no apparent reason
- I would love it if it didn't prompt me for what connection (USB or Bluetooth) each time. Perhaps you could implement a feature to remember this setting on the PC & BB?

Questions:
- There is no new PC version correct?
- I really wish we could resolve this new issue that started in the past month or so with the packet transfer. Let me know what I can do to help.

Regards,

Nate

1) How much data transfer are you usually sending and receiving before it "hangs up"?

2) Are you still seeing packets being sent/received on the BlackBerry? On the PC?

3) Mac/PC? What type of OS?

4) What carrier are you using?

5) Can you open the View Log on your BlackBerry when it happens and see if there is any errors there?

6) Are you using Bluetooth or USB?

7) By hang up, do you mean it's just stops sending and receiving or does it crash?

8) What type of connection are you getting on your phone? What phone model are you using?

Answers to the above questions can help us debug better.

Patrick,

Please find my answers below. A lot of this information is also within the other support thread titled "frustrating hang-ups" that the collective tether community has contributed to.

1) How much data transfer are you usually sending and receiving before it "hangs up"?

NR - This changes. Sometimes only 1 or 2 mb. Sometimes it will go for 100 mb before ending.

2) Are you still seeing packets being sent/received on the BlackBerry? On the PC?

NR - Now that I can track the BB packets I will keep my eye on that. From the PC it is usually 0 packets send & received but sometimes it will go 1 or 2 through. Nothing substantial enough to warrant a connection or data transfer. Also sometimes packets will go through with any corresponding mb.

3) Mac/PC? What type of OS?
NR - PC using Windows XP

4) What carrier are you using?
NR - Bell

5) Can you open the View Log on your BlackBerry when it happens and see if there is any errors there?
NR - I will check into that.

6) Are you using Bluetooth or USB?
NR - It happens on both

7) By hang up, do you mean it's just stops sending and receiving or does it crash?
NR - Stops sending and receiving

8) What type of connection are you getting on your phone? What phone model are you using?
NR - 3G on Bell's new network on a Blackberry Bold 9700.

Patrick,

Some updates for you.

The connection just failed with 2.48 mg send and 13.8 mb received. The laptop tether app still says "Connected to Blackberry", and blackberry tether app now says "Failed to find an available port. Please exit the application via the menu and try again".

The bb log is riddled with:

"java.io.IOException: Tunnel failure"
"udpConnection was null!"
"No longer receiving packets"

and near the top of the log after "Connected to PC via Bluetooth" and before all the above errors is this one:

"IOException in Receive thread while managing PC Connection: net.rim.device.api.io.IOClosedException: Connection closed"

Let me know if you need anything else for your troubleshooting.

Hey Nate,

Wierd, I have the exact same setup 9700 on Bell's HSPA network. I just finished using it for two hours in the car and didn't have any issues (even going 100 km/h). Although I was using USB.

I've forwarded this to one of programmers to take a look at. In the meanwhile I'll try testing over Bluetooth.

Not sure if it's related to Tether or not, but my 3G transfer rates are next to nothing. I literally only get around 3KB/s with a 3G connection however I get between 8-12KB/s on an EDGE connection. Seems to be consistent no matter where I'm at. St. Louis, MO or Houston, TX or even Atlanta, GA. Same results no matter where.

Just downloaded it to my MacBook and tested.

BlueTooth was certainly faster in connecting and upload and download speeds seemed better overall for me.

Only one thing I have noticed that is different then previous version, that is when I exit the Tether on PC, the client on BlackBerry is no long exit automatically, it is still active until I exit on the BB.

For the last 3 months or so I've considered this program a complete waste of my 50 bucks...But this new version is finally working for me the way I assume it was always intended to...Too bad my new place will have high speed cable next month...4 months would have made it worth the cost...1 month doesn't...Either way this version seems to be working well...Still should be considered a beta program in my opinion

I just downloaded the new version and it appears to work on Win 7 Home Premium netbook as did the version before this xxxx.01, I believe (kept passing on the prompt of a new version and stuck with what I had that I knew worked).

As others have noted, when the PC client is closed, the new version does not close down - you must do so manually. I'm not sure that I prefer that behavior. I generally think that if folks take the step to EXIT on the pc, they know they are finished at the moment and want it closed on the BB.

Oh, Tour with OS 5.xxxx hybrid.

I like the packet feedback on the bb.

New version works great. Love the packet feedback. New app definitely starts up much faster.

Kind of miss the app on the Storm exiting when the PC app is excited.

Keep up the great work.

Ugh guys, I really thought that this would work, but the packet issue is still killing me.

Verizon Tour using Bluetooth

Windows 7 32 Bit.

1) How much data transfer are you usually sending and receiving before it "hangs up"?

It varies, just like the user above.

2) Are you still seeing packets being sent/received on the BlackBerry? On the PC?

The PC doesn't register any more packets coming in, and neither does the BB, but I CAN use the internet on my BB fine while Tether is 'hung up.'

3) Mac/PC? What type of OS?
Windows 7 32 bit

4) What carrier are you using?
verizon

5) Can you open the View Log on your BlackBerry when it happens and see if there is any errors there?
I didn't see any error messages, but I usually don't sit there and let it sit longer than 5 minutes before I restart the connection.

**Edit, I let it sit for 30 minutes after losing packets and the last thing the log says is "Connected to PC via Bluetooth

6) Are you using Bluetooth or USB?
It happens on both

7) By hang up, do you mean it's just stops sending and receiving or does it crash?
Stops sending and receiving

8) What type of connection are you getting on your phone? What phone model are you using?
It happens on both 3G and 1X Verizon networks on Tour 9630.

Hope this helps!

Can you double check the log when the packets stop? There should be something in there if the connection is interrupted. This would let us know when and where it's failing.

There is no error in the log.

The Blackberry is still talking to the network, (there is a little up and down arrow in the top right corner that is active when the internet is active) I can visit websites fine, use twitter and receive email. It's like a door to the tether connection gets shut down somewhere in the phone.

Have you noticed if this happens after receiving a text message, or after your BlackBerry data connection downshifts to a slower connection type?

Last night, I received quite a few text messages (I am a huge NHL fan) while using Tether. The txts came through while playing WoW and I barely noticed the hiccup in the connection, and it always connected fine.

I don't experience a drop in connection speed since I am in a 1X signal area.
Are you able to talk to Patrick on your team? I sent him the log, but like I said, there are no errors in it.
What I can do is travel to a EV1X area (3G) and see if it replicates the error. Will that help?

Lost connection on a bluetooth connection in the 3G area. Guess that didn't make a difference

Just loaded new version. Seems to run a bit faster when I go to speedtest.net. Does not perform well on the ping test. I received an "F".

I'm on Sprint using a bbTour, bluetooth on a macbook.

very happy!

My tether speeds are rediculously slow. Just verified it again here in Atlanta. When connected to a 3G network I get around 7KB/s MAX. If I force my phone to EDGE, I get around 12KB/s MAX.

If I use DUN and the IPModem setup I get around 100KB/s on 3G.

What's up? Does Tether funnel all traffic through a set of proxy servers? Are they saturated with traffic?

What carrier are you on? What phone mdoel are you using?

Yes, your data goes through a Proxy server that can handle 100 MBPS, we never even get close to that number.

In most cases the proxy server speeds it up because it offloads the processing from the phone.

2 questions:

1. is there anyway to find out what version you are runing on the Blackberry side without doing a new install.

2. On the pc/Mac side, what are the current versions, and how do you update if required.

Thanks.

On you Blackberry, go to Option, then Applications, it will list all the applications you have installed on the device and version number.

On pc/Mac side, the current version is 1.1.0.2

Could we get the list fo the new default supported Carrier APNs?

I think that "orange.fr" is now working well, instead of the old apn "orange". Am I right?

Thank you,
